Sorry to post this in AIBU, but no one answered my post in General Health.

I had a tooth extraction on Thursday and don’t seem to have a visible blood clot. The area is white/grey and looks a bit like pus. Does anyone think this could be dry socket? It’s a bit painful but not too bad if I take paracetamol every 4 hours.

I’m no expert, but I’ve had dry socket twice and both times it felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to the side of my face.

I would say if you’re in ‘a bit’ of pain, I wouldn’t worry about it being dry socket too much.

Hope it feels better soon though :)

WombatStewForTea · 29/11/2020 22:17

I've also had dry socket and it was the worst pain imaginable. I would have thrown myself under a bus if I'd have been able to get off the sofa. Nothing touched it.

Ismellphantoms · 29/11/2020 22:21

It looks like normal healing to me. As your mouth is wet, you don't get a scab like you do on skin. If you had a dry socket, you'd be in agony.

Frankiesa · 29/11/2020 22:25

Thanks. I thought that a red clot should form, that’s why I’m worried. My whole gum area is very sore, but that’s probably from the extraction. I wake up during the night after the paracetamol wears off, but the pain is not that bad, just a dull ache.

picklemewalnuts · 29/11/2020 22:26

No, it's a white clot first from the white blood cells.

Frankiesa · 29/11/2020 22:35

Ok thanks, I didn’t realise the clot could be white.

I think I was just worried because I’ve got a Lung Function Test at the hospital tomorrow, and thought I’d have to cancel if I had dry socket. My dentist said that I’d be fine doing the Lung Function Test, even though it means breathing through tubes. I guess if it’s healing up ok then I should be fine.

Salt mouthwashes should help.

Frankiesa · 30/11/2020 07:44

Yes I've been doing salt washes 3 times a day using a whole mug of salt water

I've now had 6 teeth out and they all go like that - they call it granulated tissue, it's whiteish/greyish cells forming on the top of the wound. It's normal and supposed to be there, don't worry!

hadenoughnegativity · 30/11/2020 07:54

Dentist here. That's normal granulation tissue, and looks like it's healing well

Cailleach · 30/11/2020 07:54

*granulation tissue - bloody autocorrect!

Frankiesa · 30/11/2020 08:32

@hadenoughnegativity thank you! Had the tooth extracted Thursday. Do you think I’m ok to go this morning for my lung function tests? Lots of breathing through tubes. My whole gum/inside cheek is also very sore but I’m sure that’s also normal.

OP posts:
hadenoughnegativity · 30/11/2020 08:34

@Frankiesa , yes. You will be fine. Mention the recent extraction when you go to your appointment so that they know to be gentle.

Frankiesa · 30/11/2020 08:38

@hadenoughnegativity Thank you very much. The advice seems to be to avoid using straws as it can dislodge the clot, but it’s now more than 72 hours so I assume the clot will not dislodge now.

Hey so I can’t tell if my tooth extraction site is healing correctly. I see the granulation tissues has formed I don’t feel like it is staying! Almost like it’s trying to dislodge! It is the 5th

Nat6999 · 21/09/2021 03:38

I had a wisdom tooth out & the white scab came off about 14 days after I had it done & then it looked exactly the same as yours. Rinse after every meal to make sure you don't leave any food in the hole.

Bobbybrownodeezy · 28/11/2022 18:26

Can anybody take a look at my extraction site to tell me if it’s healing correctly I tried to go into the dentist today cs I was pretty worried but wasn’t able to see one due to emergency can sb help me please I’m very nervous

Rogley · 28/11/2022 18:27

@Bobbybrownodeezy you need to start your own thread. You’ve commented on a 2 year old thread so most people will just respond giving advice to the op and not you

I have a question bout my extraction healing

Rasha27 · 19/03/2023 06:24

Hi guys so i just got my tooth extraction last day(friday) and rn I'm panicking because idk what inside the empty socket or whatever you call that, is that normal? It's been 2 days since i got my tooth removed

aquatoniecm · 18/04/2023 00:29

I had my extraction done Friday on the 14th and this what it look like. The white stuff slides off the extraction every time I salt rinse. Is is healing correctly?

JudgeRudy · 18/04/2023 01:47

I used to work in an orthopaedic theatre so lots of hips and knees. I explained to the patients they may have a really sore throat when they come round and feel a bit 'weird' around their mouth sometimes because whilst they were out they had a tube stuffed down their throat for several hours. When they had a sore throat they weren't alarmed.
Why wouldn't a dentist tell a patient what granulation looks like? Get the dental nurse to hold up a laminated pic...normal healing on side, dry socket other!

Kayla0417 · 12/07/2023 01:12

Also curious as well on my tooth extraction. I got them pulled last Thursday and I am pregnant so I couldn't take pain meds. I'm still in a lot of pain and am wondering if it is healing properly. This morning both sockets were covered in the whiteish stuff and now it seems to have come out a little. It looks black under there. Is it healing or should I go get it checked?
