Quick question about Ventolin inhaler

I’m usually on top of my orders for this but since I’ve been using more of it in the autumn, I’m just about out of my current inhaler.
I’m phoning docs tomorrow for another.
I have an older half full one which expires in 2021 but I seem to remember something about you have to use them within 3 months??
Or are they ok to use if still within expiry date?
Thanks, fairly recent to having asthma

I would say it’s OK to use but if you are using more of your salbutamol which relieves symptoms - you need an asthma review to see if changes need to be made to your regular preventer inhaler.

You can use it no problems, they don't have to be used within 3 months of opening.
In fact, Ventolin inhalers can be used safely for up to 12 months after their expiration date but may not be quite as effective.

Info here.

I had asthma in childhood but grew out of it. Couple of years ago I got a bad chest infection and had my first attack in nearly 20 years. The inhaler I hunted down was 18 years out of date. It still worked. Couple of months will be fine don't worry.

I have ventolin inhalers in various coat pockets and some have been there for months and they all seem to work ok .

I have never looked at the date of any inhalers, never thought to, do they stop working after a while? probs been using ones years old,

Do you use fostair, once out of fridge has to.be used within 3 months, may be getting confused with that?

MorganKitten · 29/11/2020 22:19

It’ll be fine to keep using - mine always are!

QueenofLouisiana · 29/11/2020 22:23

@puzzledquiz I’ve just been moved onto Fostair (from symbicort) and didn’t know this. Thank you.

Thanks folks, that’s great! Much appreciated

If it's the dry powder fostair it's ok, it's just the aerosol inhaler that has the 3 month expiry
