Would you live very near a prison?

Went to see a house in a lovely modern housing estate this morning. Great house for us near a bluebell wood - idyllic even - but with on flaw as far as I am concerned. Coming out of the estate across a dual carriageway is a prison with Category A male prisoners and also young offenders. We would be at the back of the estate so a few roads away but still this makes me a little uneasy what with a young family but my hubby loves the house and does not see an issue at all. AIBU?

Good friend bought a house so close to a prison you can see the roof of it from one of her windows.

She loves it. Peaceful and a lovely area. Funnily enough - she’s also a barrister who has most probably been part of the prosecution team for ‘said’ inmates. So if she’s cool with it....

I used to live really close to strangeways, when I first moved there and heard sirens or helicopters at night I’d always assume somebody had escaped but in reality that never happened and was probably just for the football
It wouldn’t put me off in the future

I used to commute from the nearest station to a women's prison in Surrey. If I was travelling later in the morning, I would often be asked for a cigarette by a lady with a clear bin bag full of bits and bobs.

Took me a while to twig that they were ex-offenders who'd served their time, and were on their way home (I was very young and daft, not very clued up!)

Always very polite and friendly, given the state of the train service we'd often stand and chat for a while! It wouldn't bother me tbh, as PP have said, more at risk from people not locked up than those who are.

Clappingforjoy · 01/12/2020 10:16

If they escape they gonna get as far away as possible and go terrorise somebody in the next street

Clappingforjoy · 01/12/2020 10:17

And not

LilMidge01 · 01/12/2020 11:02

What do you think will happen?

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 01/12/2020 11:10

If they escaped they'd want to fuck off from the area asap I'd think, you're probably safer closer to it than a couple of miles away!

Same here @WinniePig i live just outside York and when we were looking to buy we avoided Full Sutton.

I grew up in a village with a cat c prison in it. My parents still live there. If they get out they aren’t going to hang around. Local farmers leave clothes bundles in their barns . This is so they don’t bother them at their house and will also hep the search as the police will know which direction to hunt

Aebj · 01/12/2020 11:22

@cologne4711 never meet anyone else who knows where Denbury is🤣🤣

Parkandride · 01/12/2020 11:31

Just had to look up what the prison near me is - cat C apparently. There's a YOI too, parking can get a bit busy around it but never thought about it otherwise

Why oh why did I read the thread title as

" Would you live IN a very NICE prison..."

... and thought to myself, well, how nice could a very nice prison really be, however ... a nice solitary cell.... peace and quiet... hmmmm.

The actual prisoners won't bother you at all unless they're allowed out periodically.

Visitors aren't always the cream of society. If there's a very cheap pub very close to the prison I might avoid it close to visiting hours.

I suggest you walk around the area & see what it's like?

I live quite near Wandsworth (sadly not in one of the £3m houses referenced in earlier in the thread), the prison has no impact. In the very shadow of it there's a nice garden centre that I often to go

hardyloveit · 01/12/2020 18:57

My friend from school lived literally opposite a cat a prison. Her dad always used to say

" if they break out, the last place they will go to is the first house, as they will want to get as far away as possible"

Makes sense 🤷‍♀️

user1471538283 · 01/12/2020 19:07

If it was quiet it wouldn't bother me.

MotherExtraordinaire · 01/12/2020 21:37

I know the prisons you're talking about.

If a prisoner escaped, then the last place they'd remain is locally I assure you.

The worst "element" will be on release days, when you will see released prisoners walking towards the garage to be able to get a taxi. They won't hang around!

Is this milton keynes? If so the areas around Woodhill seem to attract more car crime and tourists than anything else. Otherwise except for Oxley Park they’re really safe, really family orientated places.

I live near to Styal women’s prison. It’s a beautiful building and they have a fantastic restaurant. You struggle to get a table.
