WIBU to raise this with school?

DD's school informed us in September that due to covid we would only be enter the school via the main gate and would have to leave via an alleyway. This was fine at first but the last few weeks have seen a large number of leaves and mud gather in the alley and the leaves are a slip hazard when wet.

Would I be unreasonable to mention this to the school? I doubt any of the staff exit via this way so may not be aware. I dont believe the school owns the alley so won't really have responsibility but as it is the only exit available now surely it should be made safer?

I am aware I might be in a minority with worrying but I have a phobia of slipping since slipping over in bad weather while pregnant so will appreciate more balanced responses!

Raise it with the council, and then tell the school.

Lauren1983 · 29/11/2020 18:22

Thank you Nails. I didn't even think of the council but will contact them.

Can you get a few people together to sweep up the leaves? Ask the council for some green waste bags or put on the school compost heap?

namechanger0989 · 29/11/2020 18:29

I would think you will have to raise with council. We have this same 'argument' with our school every year when it is icy.... they won't do anything as they don't own the alley and so therefore won't take responsibility for it because of members of the public etc. Basically a get out clause incase anything happened after they put grit down.

Lauren1983 · 29/11/2020 18:36

I'm am good morning type of terms with people but don't really know anybody well enough to ask to help sweep up the leaves. I'm probably the only one concerned tbh!

I think the council is the way to go. I actually leave the alley via the other end exit which means I have a longer walk so am not in danger myself but pretty much everyone else goes through it as it is the quickest exit and I'm concerned for them.

I can't help smiling at asking for balanced respoinses on the subject of slipping Grin

There's no downside to mentioning it to the school though, no need to ask about that

Bookworming · 29/11/2020 18:40

Sweep them up yourself, probably no one else shares your phobia, so deal with it.

Lauren1983 · 29/11/2020 18:43

Bookworming - I think you are probably right in that is just my phobia and nobody else cares. Will contact council though and see what they say first.

I think you're being unreasonable here. I'd imagine with the whole school leaving through the exit it couldn't be that bad.

I'd either sweep them myself or wear shoes with grips...and watch my footing.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/11/2020 18:44

raise it with the school and the council - the council may not be aware that the school is telling people to use it, and be able to deploy street cleaners (that they may not have bothered with previously if little used) - or the school can deploy groundstaff/organise volunteers.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 29/11/2020 18:48

How long is the alley? Would it be possible to just go down there and sweep them up yourself? If not mention to the council and school.

Boop79 · 29/11/2020 18:52

It definitely sounds like a hazard. Dd has a mild physical disability and she falls a lot anyway so they would really pose a risk if it was the same here. Maybe mention it to the school or maybe the council? YANBU. I can’t believe people are telling you to clean it up yourself. Like it’s your responsibility 🤣

I have considered sweeping them up but I think I'd look strange rocking up with a spade on the school run! The whole alley is full of leaves so not sure it would be a quick one woman job.

I looked on my council site and there was a bit on the form for dead leaves so hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Yes a pregnant woman, concerned about slipping on wet leaves, should go and sweep them up, which will of course require her to stand on said leaves Hmm

Yes let the council know and I'd let the school know too and that you've informed thr Council

Userme93 · 29/11/2020 19:09

Raise it with the council. I informed school of some ice on the path outside school and was told they legally weren't allowed to put grit/salt on it as of anyone then slipped on it they would be liable.

Bookworming · 29/11/2020 19:29

@Wearywithteens not patronising at all, OP has admitted she has a phobia, she needs to deal with it.

Presumably no one else has complained or a "work force" would've been formed. Or the school would've done something.

It's an OP issue and she needs to deal with it.

I don't expect anyone to deal with a "phobia" I have.
