AIBU to be sad about the Christmas markets photo, and yes I know, bigger picture etc...

Let me just get all the "don't know you know there is a pandemic" and "I would rather not kill people just to walk round a market"...out of the way - I know this is a touch self centred but...

Every year (this wasn't planned, just evolved into a tradition) we take a photo of the DC at a certain spot in the Christmas market. We have done it for the last seven years, and it's lovely - even the teenage DC don't take much beating persuading into it now Wink

Of course this year it won't be happening. I have read the "recreate the Christmas markets at home" thread - which is fucking hilarious by the way - and am considering this as an option, AIBU?

We do actually have a poffertjes pan so could make the teeny pancakes (and charge the DC £7 for 5 of them) and I may already could hang outside fairy lights. I have Christmas mugs and could make mulled wine (and charge the over 18 DC £10 a mug). There are lots of other good ideas on that thread.

Is it a good idea or is it a wanky eye roll idea to actually do this?

I've never heard of poffertjes but now you've totally sold me on the idea of recreating the Christmas market! I'm going to miss visiting all the nativity scenes round the town where we live - we have done this since they were small except for last year when I couldn't persuade anyone and little did I know it wouldn't be happening again. Angry There are some artistic ones and huge mechanical ones with cheesy Christmas music.

Ellmau · 29/11/2020 11:50

A fab idea. Even if one of the DC thinks it silly that will be part of the fun.

Oooh lots of replies thank you! And thank you for the link, it's a funny thread.

The markets are definitely not happening here - in some ways it's easier as it saves me a decision, I was in the shielding category, I am quite relaxed about it but the markets might have been too busy.

I shall talk to the DC later (in answer to earlier question, I don't have as many as I would have liked. I love huge families - although the cost of poffertjes would have been even more extortionate!)

Lucy I hope your chemo has been going as well as it can, I totally understand about the advent calendar thing. One of the main things about Christmas and everything else for me is the routines/traditions. This year has certainly made me realise that...

If anyone is thinking of buying a poffertjes pan, I would advise against it Grin It cost a lot, it weighs a ton, the teeny pancakes are so fiddly and it's a fucker to clean!

You could play a blinder here OP.

Give them their pocket money to spend at the Christmas Market and make sure you're working on every stall Wink

ScouseQueen · 29/11/2020 11:57

Yes to doing the photo, somehow! I am now working 'Christmas market food' into my menu planning.

CommonsensibleYouTotalFuckwit · 29/11/2020 13:05

Worra a couple of them are working and earning their own money, so that's even better for your plan Wink

I also have a ready supply of inept badly hand sewn items, I could put them on a table, catch the DCs' eyes when they are looking at them and engage them in chat, so they then feel guilty walking away and not buying any of them.

For my face masks, the materials only cost about £2 so I will charge £75 per mask.

Well for fucks sake.

I gave the DC the choice of just going into town and taking the annual photo near the Christmas lights OR recreating the market at home.

And they said both.

FML. I don't think they realise I am going to charge them £8 for 6 teeny pancakes though Grin

Your photo this year should be the DC in the house with daily Mail sad faces holding some bog roll!

Just resurrecting my own zombie thread, damn bad form I know Grin but I thought everyone likes a "happy" (or at least a Xmas Smile) ending...

We couldn't travel into the city in the end so we didn't get to take a photo with the Christmas lights. But this morning my DC gave me a wrapped present (after we had agreed they wouldn't spend their money on presents this year!) and it was the Christmas market photo from last year mounted in a special frame for my bedside table.

How kind is that? Xmas Smile it is next to me now with fairy lights around it making me smile so I thought I would share the happy feeling.

I hope everyone is having as happy a Christmas as they can this year and lots of best wishes to everyone struggling for whatever reasons. Thanks

That is lovely of your DC. Hopefully resurrect the tradition next year Smile Happy Christmas OP 🎄
