About vomiting in public

If you are unwell and need to be sick and this comes on you quite suddenly, what’s the equitette? Is there one?

It seems really horrible to leave a puddle of vomit on a road or car park but what else can you do, realistically?

I once ruined a very nice handbag to avoid leaving a mess in the street.

I would never do that in a million years.

It has happened a small number of times, fortunately, but I find a corner, or some plants.
I used to carry a bag when I was pregnant, although, amazingly, I never needed to use it.

GCAcademic · 29/11/2020 13:22

Thank you for this thread. I've always felt residual shame about the time I threw up on a tube platform (which was thankfully empty at the time) after taking the morning-after pill (back in the days when the formula made you very sick). I'm glad to see that there are even more embarrassing stories than this. At least I didn't make it to the escalator like some of you. And that poor guide dog!

GCAcademic · 29/11/2020 13:24

OMG @ILoveAllRainbowsx

What a brilliant product. Have you had cause to use it? Does it work?

Poshjock · 29/11/2020 13:24

Can I just interject that dog poo bags are amazing for holding vomit. As a dog owner I have them stashed everywhere, car, bag, pockets, in plentiful supply and they hold surprising amount amazingly well.

Sadly we're now past masters, DH's health means sick is a very common occurrence and the "casual vomit" is sadly part of our lives now.

2bazookas · 29/11/2020 13:37

The polite thing is to vomit into your handbag.

lockeddownandcrazy · 29/11/2020 13:50

Bushes or drains, if not then get a plastic bag or something and at least scrape it off the path.

EffOrf · 29/11/2020 13:53

I was sick on a coach trip on holiday, several times, luckily we had some plastic bags but you still have to sit there with everyone around knowing as it stinks, I had a headache so think it was a migraine that caused it as I am usually sick with migraines but it was awful, it did ruin the holiday a bit as I daren'n go out much after that as I still fell a bit iffy

MrsToothyBitch · 29/11/2020 14:11

I once vomited in the back of an uber. I asked the driver to turn the music up, because I "loved that tune", shoved my head in my handbag, emptied my make up bag out, and threw up in it. I zipped it up and binned it in the nearest public bin to my house later since it was tatty anyway.

Never had to hurl in the street but would aim for a drain! I love the look of those sick bags!

ememem84 · 29/11/2020 14:12

DH was both impressed and appalled at me in 2015 when we were en route to wembley for a rugby World Cup game. We’d been out the night before and on the train there I felt a bit wierd.

As the train stopped two stops before wembley I hopped off onto the platform vommed in a bin and then hopped back on the train as if nothing had happened. #classy

VainAbigail · 29/11/2020 14:15

I remember a boy at school throwing up in assembly many years ago. We were in Year 11 and he tried to catch it. Needless to say, those that were sat around him disappeared pretty sharpish!

MrsToothyBitch · 29/11/2020 14:19

DP has also just reminded me of the time I choked whilst on a packed train from Manchester to London. Choked on a crumb and some water, didn't want to spit it all out over the people around me and tried to swallow. Ended up being sick out of my nose and spraying it onto the man opposite me. It was like something out of the exorcist!!

HerselfIndoors · 29/11/2020 14:40

This is bringing back awful memories of school coach trips. Once person would throw up and then the smell/sound would set more and more people off. Teachers running up and down with sick bags and the whole coach reeking of vom!

hedgehogger1 · 29/11/2020 14:44

I had HG when pregnant. I used to use Tesco freezer bag, never went anywhere without one clutched in my hand. Remember sitting in an occupational health meeting while some twat told me "no ones ever died from throwing up or fainting in front of a class" and wishing I could just throw up on his desk. Sadly that was one of my better days.

mongoosebaby · 29/11/2020 14:56

During pregnancy I carried around my own sealable sick bags. They work really well and stopped me panicking about feeling sick all the time (I was feeling so sick all the time I had virtually no warning I was about to puke)

Beingsickoutside · 29/11/2020 15:02

I’ve just seen that some people think this is a troll thread, why? Is it so unusual to be ill and need to be sick?

Yes? I've been sick once in over a decade. I've literally never given it a second's thought where I might barf when out and about Confused

Same! I always keep some in the car and in my bag, just in case someone feels ill.

I’m emetophobic so I try to think of how someone like me would feel if I puked in front of them. I don’t want to cause a panic attack!

Yes but I’d recommend lining them with a tissue as it seems to help hold the sick in rather than it splashing back out again.

I don’t think there is an etiquette. It’s just a case of doing what you can to vomit into the least offensive place. Once when I had a migraine on a train I was convinced I would be sick and took my jumper off to keep on my lap to be sick into.

You don’t suffer from motion sickness, severe sickness in pregnancy, you’ve never had chemotherapy and you’re generally healthy. Aren’t you lucky? Perhaps you pull faces at people who do. Aren’t you lovely.

I was very lucky not to suffer morning sickness during my pregnancies, I did however, once projectile vomit without any warning all over a former employer's desk and him.
All his paperwork, computer, phone and suit got a covering of it.
I don't know who was the most shocked.

Legoandloldolls · 29/11/2020 15:19

Nappy sacks work too. We often get the ferry to the Isle of Mann. It should be called the Barf packet. Seen a woman throw up in her handbag on the trip and dd didnt get off the Mersey before she started.

When staying at a Haven holiday park and ds was about two or three months old I was totally unused to drinking, got drunk and puked in my trainer as I didnt want to be sick on the carpet. Kids didnt blink and though I was unwell. Not one of my finest moments.

Lucky you

As it’s been proven on here, some people suffer sickness more than others

I get ill very easily so that’s one way of me vomiting.

I had HG during pregnancy, another vomit inducing tale

My back was so painful I was actually vomiting from pain not illness

seven201 · 29/11/2020 16:50

Sounds like you are sick often. Could you get some sick bags for your bag? Otherwise wherever looks best and try and wash away a bit with a bottle of water.

5foot5 · 29/11/2020 17:34

The only time in recent memory that this happened to me I did manage to do it very neatly in a bin. It was a few years ago when we were having a short break in Budapest. I wasn't drunk or anything (honestly!) but had had a very rich meal that didn't seem to agree with me. As we were walking back to the hotel I was feeling queasier and queasier and just kept hoping I could keep everything down until I got to the privacy of our own bathroom. But suddenly I knew that wasn't happening and was very relieved to find a convenient bin.

Something similar happened to DD on holiday last year and she wasn't quite so fortunate. She did manage to dive down a side street out of public view and perform the grisly task behind a large bin (with me holding her hair back out of the way)

When I was pregnant I had really bad hg I started carrying sick bags with me . Was awful
