I lost a parent to Covid earlier this year and I’m currently doing the hard job of clearing their home with a hired van.

I’m very grateful to have inherited their tiny car. I need to drive the hired van full of stuff 200 miles once everything cleared.

AIBU to try and find a 2nd driver eg through Facebook? I have no idea how to do this but feel it must be possible when there’s no pandemic but maybe not now?

So you need to pick up the car and drive the van back home?

Is there any reason why you can not just use a removal company ?

I would not have a random person that you dont know on FB removal companys will be insured and tracable if something goes wrong . What would happen if the person driving the van had a crash , drove off with your stuff , broke items ?
Also if you have hired the van you will be the only one allowed to drive it unless you put them on the hire doc's too which will prob cost you more
Do you not know anyone that can drive that would help you out if you paid them for their time ?

So sorry about your loss, StartingOver2020

I’ve never done anything like that, sorry. Maybe try a removals firm or a local taxi firm? I would be concerned about advertising for someone on FB or the like. If you have the time, it may be cheaper and easier to just come back and get it another day.

Cant you tow the car behind the van? We moved across the state last year and we drove one car and the other one was on a car trailer towed by the van.

Thank you!

I hired the van 200 miles away, and I’m transporting everything to my sibling’s home. I either have to empty it and drop it off near my sibling or drive it back to place I hired it. (Sibling is a full time carer and can’t help with the driving). It will take a few more days to finish the job so I have time to decide.

Maybe the answer is a removal van and me driving the car. I was only planning to take back the equivalent of an estate car’s capacity plus kid.

My brain keeps imagining complicated scenarios, probably to avoid the emotional toll it’s all taking.

The van hire doesn’t allow towing unfortunately.

Thank you for your sympathy BoomBoomsCousin unfortunately coming back another day isn’t an easy option because of the 200 miles - not really possible in a taxi 🙂

Such a tough job to have to do OP.

Is the van hire company a national one? Could you pay the one way fee and drop it locally to your parents house?

Or, if it's a relatively small amount of stuff (estate car full) get as much as you can in the little car and courier the rest. Might be cheaper if the alternative is a 200 mile trip back.

Sorry you're having to do those.

StartingOver2020 · 28/11/2020 04:08

Genius Pheasantplucker2 why didn’t I think of couriering stuff?

It just might work...
