about a car

My neighbour’s car broke down in April and it has been parked in the street now for 7 months. It’s residential parking in a cul de sac and spaces are at a premium.

She’s recently sold the car to a company and they’ve given her money for it but haven’t collected it. The MOT has run out but the tax hasn’t.

She doesn’t seem that bothered but how can I get this car removed?? The other neighbours are pissed off as well as now the car technically doesn’t belong to any one on the street.

Can I get the car taken away?

By your logic people could get anyone's car removed on the grounds that it is parked somewhere they don't live! How ridiculous would that be? Go visit Granny, come out to find your car gone because you don't live in that street. Grin

If it's taxed it has as much right to be there - assuming it is legally parked - as any other car.

@FlatulentSproutEater

Well I don’t think that’s the point I’m making.

This car can’t go anywhere and it has essentially now been abandoned by the company who have purchased it

Is it on private property though?

Nicknacky · 27/11/2020 17:49

You said they have just recently bought it. They likely just hadn’t had a chance to collect it yet.

Quite frankly, what does it matter if it is parked there and doesn’t move?

Floralnomad · 27/11/2020 17:50

It can’t be parked on the road with no MOT so you could report it for that but I doubt anyone would do anything .

isthistheendoftheworld · 27/11/2020 17:51

Because it’s been there for 7 months, is leaking oil on the street and when spaces are at a premium it’s irritating for other residents.

This is mumsnet though, where people pretend this wouldn’t bug the shit of them 😂😂

When will the VED run out?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/11/2020 17:52

Why is it bothering you so much. The neighbour obviously always took up a space with the car, its just that she can't move this one now. I'm sure the company will get around to collecting it.

Nicknacky · 27/11/2020 17:53

It would bug me but she is trying to get rid of it so I would be happy it was going.

MadameBlobby · 27/11/2020 17:55

Probably not much you can do but it would irritate the shite out of me as well.

FestiveChristmasLights · 27/11/2020 17:56

If it’s been bought, is on the public highway with no MOT and the sale went through a reasonable amount of time ago, then report it to your local council as an abandoned vehicle.

isthistheendoftheworld · 27/11/2020 17:56

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

She has another car now so her old one has just sat there for 7 long monthsb

The tax doesn't go with the car now. The seller is supposed to put in for a refund and the new owner taxes it. Unless the new owner has taxed it, it isn't properly taxed.

papaelf · 27/11/2020 17:58

Leaking oil all over the street?

Call the council, that's a hazard, there must be masses of the stuff, usually oil leaks are only visible when you move the car, because the oil leaks under it.

papaelf · 27/11/2020 18:00

The only way OP could know it's taxed would be to check online. So it must be properly taxed.

BoomBoomsCousin · 27/11/2020 18:03

I’d report to to the council (I think council are supposed to deal with this) as possibly abandoned and damaging the street/environment with oil leak. Cars without an MOT should not be parked on the public street so that works in your favour.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 27/11/2020 18:04

Yes papaelf unless the neighbour hasn't put in for the refund and the two systems haven't caught up with each other.

Theo1756 · 27/11/2020 18:20

Op - lots of people pointing out about tax not being transferable. can you confirm you have checked the car is still taxed to put these arguments to rest? If so does it renew monthly? Seems strange to buy a car and tax it just to leave it dumped in some cul de sac. Also, you can’t buy tax without a valid MOT so does really seem strange for there still to be tax. Perhaps the vehicle ownership wasn’t transferred. Regardless of status you can still report car abandoned to dvla.

isthistheendoftheworld · 27/11/2020 19:28

I double checked the gov website and it’s taxed until sept 2021 but the MOT ran out at the start of Oct this year

Should add that it’s absolutely not parked on private land. It’s in residential parking
