AIBU to report a hit and run to the police - with diagram :0)

Not sure what I will gain if I report them. I was waiting to turn right into a drive through and they were coming out... They cut the corner and hit the rear corner on the passenger side, I beeped, but they just ignored and continued on. Yes, I know that if I hadn’t wanted a fast food fix, then I wouldn’t have been there in the first place Grin. But I was completely not to blame for them gouging a big scrape on my car was I? Confused. But my biggest dilemma is that they will possibly get into a lot of trouble, but I won’t actually get my car fixed unless I pay for it? Anyone else had this?Sad

If you are going to use your insurance to fix it, won't you need a police reference anyway?

I wouldn't be worried about them getting into trouble - they did something wrong, that's what happens.
I don't know how these things work when it's your word against theirs - do you have the reg? Any CCTV?

MrsMupps · 27/11/2020 11:50

I got their reg and presumably there would be some sort of corresponding damage on their van? But no, no dash cam / cctv. I’m not sure it would be worth going through the insurance... I might need to just live with the scrape... but I can’t decide whether reporting them will make me feel sad or satisfied.

Absolutely report it. If they didn't stop there's a fair chance they're not insured and shouldn't be on the road

ExclamationPerfume · 27/11/2020 11:53

Without witnesses you won't have any chance of getting them to do anything.

Not quite. There will be evidence of the collision in the form of matching damage, and the location of the damage will support OP's evidence.
Smallsteps88 · 27/11/2020 12:06

Definitely report. Probably CCTV in the area. Hope you get them Op.

TheStripes · 27/11/2020 12:07

Yes, report them.

NetballHoop · 27/11/2020 12:15

I'd report them. If nothing else it might make them take more care in future.

DeltaAlphaDelta · 27/11/2020 12:25

I work in motor insurance investigation and whether the Police will be that interested is very hit and miss. Most likely they will put it in the too difficult pile.

Still report it to them though, as you'll most likely need it to report to your insurer. Your insurer will most likely pursue it rather than the Police.

*most likely need a Police reference number for your insurer
foxes15 · 27/11/2020 12:36

If you have the reg report to the incident to your insurers they will be able to trace the driver through that and contact their insurer.

Get a police reference number for your insurers and see if it’s on cctv anywhere.

It’s frustrating when you get hit and they run off. But I got the young girl who hit me, so all my losses were paid back.

Ispini · 27/11/2020 12:40

Please report, it could be a child next time and your car will need to be fixed if you ever want to sell it.

ExclamationPerfume · 27/11/2020 16:12

@Collaborate someone hit my car. They left bits of their car at the scene. We found the car parked locally with the matching bits missing. I went to the police station and they couldn't give a toss. No witnesses no evidence.

I take your point. I had forgotten that we're living in a society that keeps on pretending our public services are properly funded.

PinkiOcelot · 27/11/2020 16:17

Hope you’ve reported them by now OP.
I’d had my new car 8 days when someone did that to me though I wasn’t in the car when it happened.
The damage looked similar. I didn’t go through the insurance, just paid myself. It cost £145.

hedgehogger1 · 27/11/2020 16:21

Yes definitely report it.

MrsMupps · 27/11/2020 17:42

Thank you everyone for your replies, I’ll defo report it online, just really annoying that as @ExclamationPerfume said, the police most probably won’t do anything. Sad

Report it online for the insurance but as no one was injured it’s really more a civil matter. Have you put the ref into the Gov site to see if it’s taxed and MOTd if it’s not the chances of them being insured is slim Sad

Princessbanana · 28/11/2020 00:54

I would report it and if you are going through insurance then ring your insurance to contact their insurance (if they have any) did you go into the fast food place to see if they have cameras?

MissCalamity · 28/11/2020 12:22

So frustrating OP, if you go through your insurance though be prepared for the van driver to lie through their teeth and claim it wasn't them, especially without witnesses, dash cam or CCTV.

The police would probably take the report from you but not do anything further.

How much do you think it would cost to repair v your insurance excess?

I speak from experience from having a similar experience which lasted for over a year, and was extremely frustrating all round.

Elai1978 · 28/11/2020 12:47

Report it to get a crime reference number but the police won’t give a shit and will do precisely fuck all about it. Too much like hard work.

This

We had a "hit and run" complete with supporting dash cam footage and witness statements. The police didn't give a shiny shit.

The car that hit us was reported "stolen" after the event and now our insurance premiums have gone up because even our insurance have washed their hands of it.
