To replace a gas hob?

I am getting a new work surface and now also seems like a good time to replace the hob.

It’s a 5 ring, stainless steel Bosch one and I love it.. but the hot plates are rusty, the controls have worn off and one ring no longer stays alight.

DH is keen that we replace it with an electric induction hob for environmental reasons... he says in 4 years time gas will be phased out altogether?

I am a keen ( and good) cook and do 99% of the cooking at home. I have tried using induction hobs- including MILs very fancy one and I hate them as they just aren’t easy enough to get exactly the right temperature- they cut out if you lift the pan up ( to swirl caramel, flip a pancake or shake a wok.) you just can’t heat a wok on one... my gripes go on.

AIBU to replace it with a new gas one or should I make myself learn to cook on the electric?

I prefer gas. An induction hob nearly took me to tears on holiday!

Chouetted · 26/11/2020 18:32

It's gas heating that's going, not gas hobs...

Chouetted · 26/11/2020 18:34

Correction. Apparently there was also a recommendation for no new builds to be connected to the gas.

Noone is going to rock up at your existing house and disconnect your hob. That would be insane.

If you are doing the cooking, you get to choose.

I love my induction hob. I've always had gas before, but now I'd never go back. It's much easier to clean and is as responsive as gas. When I lift or move a pan and then replace it the hob is still on. It only switches off if you move a pan for ages. Mine is a Neff and is awesome!

I have induction. I can use a wok, it cuts out when I lift the pan up but goes straight back on when put down, and its very easy to control temp. And easy to clean.

My sister is a chef at a high end restaurant and she loves her induction hob.

Much prefer gas, wok cooking never quite right on an induction imo

wonkylegs · 26/11/2020 18:39

They are phasing out gas connections to NEW properties in 4 yrs only so it'll be around for a while in the existing market.
I'm not a huge fan of induction although I have clients who love theirs. I like the fact that if we have a power cut (happens quite a bit here - rural with overhead power cables) you can still make a cup of tea and have something warm to eat if you have a gas hob you just need to light it manually.

Had gas for years, changed to induction a couple of years ago and wouldn't go back. It absolutely is responsive and controllable and very easy to use. Plus the hob is a breeze to clean.

I feel like you OP. Or felt like you I should say. I just like that you can see the fire and judge how hot it is. We moved to a house with an induction hob but once I got used to it, it was fine, and like anything there are positives and negatives.

You can absolutely flip pancakes etc even take it away for a longer to top it up with more water etc, I think it stays on for 30 seconds or something?

It's much quicker to heat up when boiling big pans of water etc and much easier to clean so saves time. Over time you get used to your hob and instinctively know which 'number' to put it on for what you're cooking, just as you know how far to turn the gas depending on what you're cooking and in which pan

Negatives are it's a bit easier to turn off accidentally eg if something is over the dial area it can turn off, and you can't char something like the skin of an aubergine on the flame

Interesting opinions thanks- a question for induction users- do you have knobs to set the temperature or do you have to use a touch button 0-9 kind of thing (the kind of thing where if you leave your finger in for too lung you miss 9 and end up back at 0?)

Mine is touch screen slidey thing. For some reason it likes to jump from 5 to 7 but you get used to it!

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 26/11/2020 19:01

We have a slider button 0 to 9 but you dont have to slide it you can just touch where you want in the middle. It also has half way points betweem each number.
Oh one useful thing is the timer, you can easily time to turn it off, each burner individually

ILikeStrongTea · 26/11/2020 19:10

Ours has a spinny dial thing that you remove and lives in the drawer when we aren’t cooking. Means the kids can’t accidentally turn the hob on. It did take me a while to get used to it but now I wouldn’t go back to gas. Things heat up very quickly, and you do get used to how to use the numbers. We also have a big middle induction ring for the wok or large pans and a double sided bit on one side for sizzling! Or large pans.

Sew3stitch · 26/11/2020 19:14

Have you seen the inductions with one gas burner for woks? Could be best of both worlds and wish we'd got one.

Can anyone recommend an induction hob? We have electric and I’m keen to upgrade...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 26/11/2020 19:31

Gas all the way. And when they phase it out (which I don't think there is a plan though) I will go old style with gas bomb in a cage outside😂

I too tried fancy induction hobs and didn't really like it. I assume I would get used to it but the gas is really ok eith me

Skysblue · 26/11/2020 23:09

Get gas.
