To expect to find a short term let with a dog and three cats?

blackkitty1234 · 26/11/2020 16:19

Help! We sold our house but it looks like our new house may fall through due to seller pulling out. It looks like we may have to find temporary a accommodation while we look for a new house. I am in my third trimester of pregnancy, we have a dog and three cats. I feel like we are screwed. Any advice or suggestions welcome?

Airbnb?

flaviaritt · 26/11/2020 16:20

Can you find anyone to have the dog for those weeks? Unfortunately I wouldn’t rent a property to someone with this number of animals.

FangsForTheMemory · 26/11/2020 16:22

I’d see if you can find family or friends to foster them tbh.

MatildaTheCat · 26/11/2020 16:22

Your life would be immeasurably easier if you could get your pets looked after for a few weeks. Do you have anyone at all who could help or could you advertise at the vet surgery for a paid person?

Sorry, it sounds crap but if you are renting you
L be in a strong position when another house comes along.

TheStripes · 26/11/2020 16:23

You could also look into a cattery and kennel. You’d still be able to see your pets daily but it would make the odds of finding somewhere to live higher.

Varjakpaw · 26/11/2020 16:25

We did! We just had to pay an additional deposit. It seems to be fairly standard in our area (SW London) where people often do show term lets when they are between houses, or having building work done.

tectonicplates · 26/11/2020 16:26

There are animal rescue charities who can organise temporary foster care.

NailsNeedDoing · 26/11/2020 16:26

All you can do is ask friends and family to help, or use kennels and a cattery.

Yabu to expect anyone to want to give you a short term let when you have animals, especially that many. But you could try offering extra rent that would cover the cost of redecorating after the pets have gone.

Tigger03 · 26/11/2020 16:27

Where are you? A lot of the fancy new build in Manchester allow pets, as they’re advertising renting as a lifestyle.

They’re not cheap but do allow pets and short term contracts I believe.

I have a dog boarder that we use when we go on holiday who could potentially take my dog. She charges twenty pound a night which is a very reasonable rate however we may be in temporary accommodation for several months. We will have to look for a new house then do our mortgage application which all takes time. If we are in temporary accommodation for say three months that would be £1800 in boarding fees then there’s the cats 😬

It's very tough. We rent and have an old cat and about 95% of rentals specify no pets. Also, they've changed the rules around fees, so they can't charge you an extra deposit for pets anymore. We have to pay £25 a month extra instead for one cat.

I'd get them looked after if its just short term, especially if you need to find a place in a hurry.

vanillandhoney · 26/11/2020 16:30

I would see if you can put the cats and dogs into kennels, to be honest. Very few people will rent to people with that many animals.

AlCalavicci · 26/11/2020 16:30

Coukd you consider a rented caravan?
I would imagine a lot of sites are quiet atm ( though a lot may also be shut at this time of year) you would have to put all of your things in to storage tho .

Why would they need to redecorate? My animals aren’t destructive. I can understand a deep clean but redecorating is ott imo.

Because that might be what it takes to reassure them.

I’ve rented with pets before and never had a problem. Your landlord has to let you know when they’re coming over for a visit so on those days I made the pets scarce and never had an issue Grin Then again never had a dog, if they’re well behaved (which I’m sure they are) and won’t damage anything you should be fine.

Malbecfan · 26/11/2020 16:34

Like the poster above, I was going to suggest a pet-friendly holiday let. Your local tourist information office may well have some ideas about who to approach. I have a holiday cottage attached to my house and have taken people over the winter in just your position. I have also charged a lot less than the advertised weekly rate because they are using their own bedding & doing their own laundry

The dog would be ok for me but I am quite allergic to cats, so I'm sorry that I can't help you.

Nottherealslimshady · 26/11/2020 16:34

Ooh that's a lot of animals for a short term rental. Is there no relative that can take the dog? The cats should be cheaper to board. What dog is it? You may get a rental for one small dog easily. Your boarder may also do you a deal because they're not earning much money atm so would probably be happy for one consistent source of income.

user1471538283 · 26/11/2020 16:34

We are renting but for 12 months and we pay pet rent. But it's been hard to find somewhere nice, in a nice area, on the ground floor. You just have to ask

Did your landlord know you had pets or did you hide them?

She’s a staffie cross so medium breed. She’s friendly and house trained.

@blackkitty1234 Because houses with dogs usually have a doggy odour. That lingers in the walls and carpets and requires a more thorough cleaning after you've left. Cats can scratch at carpets too, claws from both can damage hard floors through scratches. Cats are also notorious for rubbing themselves against walls and doorframes, leaving oils and scent. Then there's the added hazard of pet hair in the carpets. That requires more work to try and get it out - many people have allergies to pet hair and wouldn't like to get everything sorted to move into a rented property to find out that their eyes are watering and itching, or sneezing etc because the previous tenant had pets.

HotSince63 · 26/11/2020 16:41

We always accept tenants with pets. We do request an additional deposit though.

Tbh we've had tenants with toddlers that have done more damage than pets have.

AnyFucker · 26/11/2020 16:47

If the total deposit exceeds 5 weeks rent you are breaking the law.
