Period pain-home remedies?

Sparkles512 · 26/11/2020 15:32

Hi I have always suffered badly with periods and the pill used to help so I could function!
We are TTC so I need some home remedies to help with the pain!
Thanks!

Prescription painkiller Mefanamic acid. I don’t think there’s any effect on TTC.

Double hot water bottle attack. One HWB is not enough. One at the front, one at the back. You can even add a third between the legs if you get vulva pain.

The grain or cherrystone microwave heat packs. I find them better than hot water bottles because the weight of them also seems to help and they mold to your body.

I really suffered with period pain while TTC. What worked for me (to an extent) was:

  • mefenamic acid (on prescription from GP). Not everyone gets on with this - can cause digestive issues - but I was fine and it’s the only painkiller that ever worked on my cramps
  • tens machine. Got one that clipped to my waistband. Helped make it manageable on days I had to be up and about.
  • hot water bottle
  • hot baths when at home

I'm a big fan of hot water bottles but also don't think there's any problems with taking pain killers when you are TTC - particularly as the presence of period pains presumably tells you you aren't pregnant?

FangsForTheMemory · 26/11/2020 16:23

Sit in a hot bath and as above, Mefenamic acid.

vanillandhoney · 26/11/2020 16:27

Mefenamic acid.
Ibuprofen on the 2-3 days leading up to your period.
Heat - a hot bath or hot water bottles/heat pads.
Regular painkillers - alternate them if possible, so you take some every couple of hours.

Metallicalover · 26/11/2020 16:27

I would have a look into heat packs, paracetamol and some ibuprofen intermittently.
Wouldn't recommend mefana

SnackSizeRaisin · 26/11/2020 16:28

Ibuprofen

Metallicalover · 26/11/2020 16:30

Sorry posted to soon

I would advise mefenamic acid as there is some evidence that this and other NSAIDs can have an effect on implantation. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking ibuprofen leading up to your period for the same reasons.
Hope you find a remedy that works for you xx

Ibuprofen and gentle yoga help for me, there are loads of free yoga videos online for helping with period pain

Good luck!

Hi OP, what kind of products are you using? I found switching from tampons to a menstrual cup helped with cramps. Also using cotton & bamboo reusable pads towards the end rather than disposable backed with plastic helped with general comfort.

LimpidPools · 26/11/2020 16:46

Mefanamic acid. You just have to be careful with it because it can be hard on your stomach. A lot like high doses of ibuprofen really.

LimpidPools · 26/11/2020 16:49

I cross posted. My period pains decreased hugely when I switched to a cup. I always felt like tampons were sucking all the moisture out of me somehow and making me hurt.
Now that I use a cup I barely have to take pain killers. The occasional hot water bottle or bath is sufficient. I do wonder if it's also because I'm in my mid 30s now though.

Sparkles512 · 26/11/2020 16:59

Thank you!
I think heat packs and possibly mefenamic acid might be my answer!
I just use pads but might look into other options.

I have a back tilting womb so always get back ache and abdominal pain. How has using 2 hot water bottles never occurred to me? I'm 48!!

Bluetonic41 · 26/11/2020 19:58

May be a little messy but an orgasm helps!
