To feel like my boss/company are taking the p*ss? HR related

I'm a HR Administrator in a standalone role. I provide HR support and advice to management across 3 countries (UK, Germany, America). I report directly into the FD (if I called him a hands off boss, that would be being kind) he does not provide much support at all.

When I was recruited, they knew I was a HR administrator but also knew that I was keen to progress. I am on £24k with no bonus etc. I know that's not unusual for HR to not have bonus.

I've been here a year and I'm proud of what I've achieved; I've benchmarked against our competitors and improved our maternity and paternity policy. I've led the COVID-19 policy and internal track and trace. I've implemented a probation review policy which quickly identified roughly 6 underachievers in the business which had to be put on a PIP and were managed out. These are people who, before me would not have been managed out at all as our managers don't know how to manage...

I've created and implemented training courses and delivered them, I've investigated disciplinary and grievances. I've built up strong working relationships with our Senior Management Team and they've all commented on the improvements we've made. These are just a few achievements.

My FD has called me today and said "the board want to see what you've been up to" and you "need to report on turnover, absence, recruitment costs" but not in a nice tone which has set alarm bells ringing. I know they've been looking at reducing headcounts wherever possible and my manager is so hands off, he probably doesn't know what I do but equally isn't interested in the slightest.

I do all of the above, I've reduced our recruitment costs by significant amount and I'm on £25k a year. Some of our admin juniors are on only slightly less and I have responsibility for 3 countries! AIBU to think my fucking FD could take some responsibility off my "HR ADMIN" shoulders.

Sorry, this probably seems like a stupid rant. I'm tired, sad, stressed and feel like they're taking the p*ss, quite frankly. :(

@tectonicplates

So you've helped to get six people managed out, and now you're upset that it's being done to you?
That's her job num-nuts.... Get off the internet.
ReadySteadyBed · 26/11/2020 15:20

@ZoeTurtle

Sounds like you've been identified as an underachiever and will be put on a PIP and managed out. Maybe your boss is telling another group that this is just one of his many achievements.
Flipping heck, they are all out today OP! This is the stupidest thing I have read today.
LivingInCheckedMidis · 26/11/2020 15:24

@ReadySteadyBed Num nuts! I love that, you've just made me chuckle for the first time all day. Thank you Thanks

You are working outside of your job description and more importantly outside of your salary bracket. This should only be done if the work is being recognised. Also don’t under estimate your manager he has done a great job of getting you to take on extra responsibility with no cost to the company.

flaviaritt · 26/11/2020 15:26

Also don’t under estimate your manager he has done a great job of getting you to take on extra responsibility with no cost to the company.

This isn’t an achievement. If you overwork and underpay your staff and then they leave for somewhere with fair remuneration, you just have to hire again.

Heyahun · 26/11/2020 15:27

id just move on ! there are shite companies to work for and great ones - sounds like you got good experience there though - but time to move on with your career and it doesn't sound like this company will do that

Good luck x

ReadySteadyBed · 26/11/2020 15:27

I'm a HR Manager and yes you are doing a lot for the job title 'HR Admin'. However salary depends on your location too. Where are you based?

The board are wanting HR data (sometimes called HR Metrics) in that request. The best thing you can do is put together a comprehensive report on the areas requested and add any insights you can add in such as 'we have high absence rates in XYZ area due to self isolation rates'.

Ultimately you have no idea what's going on at board level so try to relax. If you were to be made redundant you will know soon enough.

This sounds like a great role though in terms of what you are learning (assuming you want a career in HR?), continue down that mentality rather than have any chip on your shoulder about pay. If you want a payrise then you need to show the justification for one but also take into account the climate, how well the business is doing etc.

As a PP said, 'HR admin' is your job so the FD isn't going to take any of it. You are being paid for a job you are doing, that's how it works. If you are unhappy with it then you can raise it but sounds relatively ok, maybe a job title change to HR Assistant or HR Officer and a review of salary. Happy to help you benchmark if you'd like to PM me.

Sounds like you have achieved a lot and you simply need to put metrics/ reporting around it and make some slides about all the policies/ processes you've implemented. I'm surprised this hasn't been requested before, it's a perfectly normal ask to show monthly/ quarterly metrics to show whether you are meeting whatever targets your team/ company measures its success.

tectonicplates · 26/11/2020 15:43

@ReadySteadyBed Give it a rest. It's well known that HR people aren't very popular, and this thread is a perfect example of why. Bragging about making people lose their jobs, and then complaining about their work not being recognised. I'll stay here on the Internet, thanks.

hotpotlover · 26/11/2020 15:53

I think performance improvement plans are just a way for a company to legally cover themselves before they fire someone.

Ah, HR are a cynical bunch!

bewilderedhedgehog · 26/11/2020 15:55

a suggestion from me: start with an overview slide, then present the figures your FD has asked for, then present (briefly) a summary of the other work you have done.

also - have you checked what the board have actually requested (is there a board secretary?). FD may have filtered the request into those areas which interface with finance - the actual request might have been quite different!

GreekOddess · 26/11/2020 15:59

@tectonicplates.

Clearly you've never worked in business.

tectonicplates · 26/11/2020 16:02

LOL. I have worked at several businesses. Funnily enough we don't gloat if someone loses their job.

MaTrottinetteElectrique · 26/11/2020 16:06

When things are going well senior people step forward to claim credit (but when things go badly then they step back to leave you in the shit!)

If you put together comprehensive report/presentation etc. be sure to make it clear that it’s your initiatives/work just in case FD lifts bits out of your documents and presents it as theirs to the board to get all the credit.

ErickBroch · 26/11/2020 16:14

Everything you have said shows your worth so write it all down and be confident. You are 100% being underpaid.

NoSquirrels · 26/11/2020 16:19

Fantastic advice from @ReadySteadyBed there, OP - sort the metrics slides, make them super useful, add in some extra value-added stuff too, and ask for a job title review etc. You sound like you've done a great job - don't stress about the board meeting. Vastly unlikely they'll be making their sole HR person redundant!

nosswith · 26/11/2020 16:19

Sorry to read that you are being undervalued.

Haffiana · 26/11/2020 16:20

Did someone gloat?
MECmad · 26/11/2020 16:41

Sounds like you have done a fab job. I'd guess that the FD has been quizzed about absence, attrition etc. & has been made to look stupid as he hasn't got a clue.

My advice would be to get the info together & blow their socks off. You know you have done a great job - they don't, so tell them!! I would seriously suggest that you start looking for a new job where your hard work will be appreciated.

Ignore the posters who are getting funny about putting people on PIP. They clearly don't understand the purpose is to help someone keep their job rather than the opposite. If someone doesn't want to improve or is unable they should move on to something more suited.

HR are always the bad guys even though they are just ensuring that policies are followed and implemented fairly. HR discipline or dismiss employees who have either broken the rules or not delivered.
There are legal processes to follow to ensure that employees are treated fairly so I'm not sure exactly how HR are in the wrong...

HR are rarely given credit for all the positive things we do but I can say I spend more of my day having a positive impact of employees that negative.

If I had space on my team, I'd hire you!
