To not want other people’s dogs to jump up at me when out walking

Trevorwhatever · 26/11/2020 13:31

Have just been on a walk in the sunshine and during the walk (across a football field in a park at that point) a medium/large sized dog ran up to me and kept jumping up at me putting its muddy paws down the back of my light coloured coat. I shouted at it to go away as the owner stood by making no effort to put it on a lead or to call it away. She just shouted ‘sorry’.

She then walked off shouting ‘you shouldn’t be walking across the fields if you don’t love dogs’.

I then shouted back ‘if you you can’t keep your dog under control then keep it on a lead’.

I was really mad I had to finish my walk in a muddy stained coat and now have to wash it because of someone else’s laziness.

Aibu to think I should be able to walk where I like without other people’s dogs jumping up at me?

@Trevorwhatever

Take a chill pill *@lockheart* or read another thread instead Grin
Oh the irony of the poster so highly strung and ‘offended’ by a dog that she was driven to post all about her angst on MN Grin
CherryCherries · 27/11/2020 22:00

When my son was 3, a dog jumped up at him "being friendly" and cut his lip. The dogs nose cut it whilst jumping up in excitement.

The dogs owner thought I was being ott by looking worried about it. My son still has a scar on his lip where that dog jumped up.

Keep dogs on fucking leads.

AnnieKenneyfanclub · 27/11/2020 22:22

@Lockheart

Yes its been done to death, yes the OP is NBU but the reason this thread comes up again and again is that lots of us are fed up to the back teeth of entitled dog owners spoiling our enjoyment of public places.

I have recently been ripped to shreds on a local FB page for challanging the assumption that our local playing fields are a ‘dog park’. And that non dog walkers should not go there!

In these times our open spaces are important to all of us and all of us have the right to enjoy them unmolested.

If another human ran up and started leaping at you, you would rightly be upset and might even suggest you had been attacked or assaulted Why do people seem to think that other peoples pets should be treated differently.

For what its worth I have always had much larger and more dangerous pets than a dog and therefore I understand the need to keep them under close control in public!

Bbang · 27/11/2020 22:24

YANBU I’ve a scar above my knee from some untrained dog owned by a negligent idiot, jumped up at me ripping through my leggings and taking a massive gouge out of my leg in the process. Had to get it cleaned and fixed up at the GP’s.

Hate dogs at the best of times.

AnnieKenneyfanclub · 27/11/2020 22:25

It is not always a bit of harmless fun if a dog jumps up at you

A dog is considered dangerously out of control if it makes someone worried that it might injure them....

There is also a test of reasonable-ness applied to that.
ClickandForget · 28/11/2020 02:00

Maybe not. They do run up to stroke my dog without asking for permission and without their parents attempting to stop them

That doesn't happen anywhere nearly as much as small children are scared shirtless by uncontrolled dogs

ClickandForget · 28/11/2020 02:01

Shitless, obvs

ClickandForget · 28/11/2020 02:05

But I don't feel a need to start a daily thread about how much I hate them, or how irresponsible or awful their parents are, and nor do I think all young people are like this

Nobody wants you to do anything beyond keeping your dog out of our face. Simples? Apparently not.

ClickandForget · 28/11/2020 02:19

That is why I live in the country, so the risk of getting people that are not understanding to a way other than there’s is limited

I've lived rurally for 40 years, with neighbours who have working dogs. And who know how to train them. Nobody locally would expect a dog to be off leash and untrained. It's only the people who drive and park their cars up here to walk their untrained dogs who cause the massive dog problem we're having.

Also the shit we have to avoid stepping in on the local footpaths.

You might protest, but you know who you are.

ClickandForget · 28/11/2020 02:48

Well that's exactly it. Dog owners respond to these threads by saying oh stop it off. Stop grizzling on about our dogs. They feel offended by the number of people who don't like their dogs.

But they need to learn some social responsibility. There are a fuckload of anti dog threads because there are a fuckload of people who are sick to the back teeth of their dogs impinging on the comfort of others. I'm uncomfortable around strange dogs. When we walk in the park, my husband wears large boots, and he's not afraid to use them.
Although ,'get your fucking dog out of my face' generally does the trick.

Note to dog owners. Nobody likes your dog
Non dog owners like them even less. Keep your dogs to yourself and everyone's happy.

SurreyHillsGirl · 28/11/2020 08:57

@Moondust001

At least children don’t jump up at strangers, cover them in mud or frighten them so much they never want to visit a park again!

Maybe not. They do run up to stroke my dog without asking for permission and without their parents attempting to stop them. They grow up to the be louts that harass people, vandalise, destroy and intimidate. Or at least some of them do. And by the time they are not that old either. But I don't feel a need to start a daily thread about how much I hate them, or how irresponsible or awful their parents are, and nor do I think all young people are like this.

Absolutely. These threads are so monotonously clichéd Hmm

Just the sort of trivial whining blather MN has, regrettably, become known for.

You sound unhinged, really, its not healthy to be so embittered

And if your H used his ‘large boots’ (what a hero) to kick one of my gorgeous dogs, it would be the last thing he did.

emilyfrost · 28/11/2020 09:58

And if your H used his ‘large boots’ (what a hero) to kick one of my gorgeous dogs, it would be the last thing he did.

SurreyHillsGirl You might think your animals are gorgeous but very few other people do.

And if you’re going to allow your mutts to jump up at other people, harass them, cause them distress etc. they are well within their rights to react how they see fit, particularly if they’re concerned about their safety.

Moutarde · 28/11/2020 10:17

I find a swift, sharp kick tends to work well with a jumpy dog.

You've no idea if the mutt is being playful or wanting to bite. Been bitten too many times to not actively discourage dogs.

The sense of entitlement and self righteous dog owners never fail to amaze me with their utter nonsense about their dog.

PhilCornwall1 · 28/11/2020 10:27

A good shove if it jumps up works with some. I've done it a couple of times and the dog hasn't done it again. Can't bloody stand them.

ClickandForget · 28/11/2020 12:08

Now that's unhinged.

AnnieKenneyfanclub · 28/11/2020 12:17

@SurreyHillsGirl

It does seem to be a regional thing I find.

I have never had a problem with other peoples dogs in Dorset or Norfolk or West Wales or Essex.

In Surrey / practically every time I go out.

Would your gorgeous dog be the one who was ‘under control’ when it took my 12 month old babies arm in it mouth to steal a sandwich? Or the Pointer who ran at my toddler and put his teeth through my leather gloves when I tried to protect him?

Funny thing is of course that most dogs even here are fine but we never no which ones have terrible owners? So we have to be cautious with all of them.

Yohoheaveho · 28/11/2020 12:19

@doadeer

Yes I hate it. I don't really like dogs and it irritates me that owners think you love their dogs 🙄
I agree although I don't mind dogs I certainly don't want to be inconvenienced or harassed by them!
Yohoheaveho · 28/11/2020 12:27

@LioneIRichTea

I love dogs but the comment “ you shouldn’t be walking across fields if you don’t like dogs” is just ridiculous 😂😂😂
A little while ago I had a confrontation with a woman who failed to keep her dogs under control, when I complained she countered with 'we were here first'
AnnieKenneyfanclub · 28/11/2020 12:32

I am thinking one issue on this is a different understanding of what a dog ‘being under control’ actually means.

Some dog owners seem to draw the line at whether or not the dog bites someone.

For everyone else it is under control if it doesn’t bother/ inconvenience/ intimidate other people.

And that it doesn’t leave shit behind ( sometimes it would be nice to let my kids play off the path...

AnnieKenneyfanclub · 28/11/2020 12:33

Basically dog owners if you are having confrontations with other people over the behaviour of your pet then it is not sufficiently under control...

Yohoheaveho · 28/11/2020 12:44

Any dog not on a lead is not under control
extendable leads do not count

dudsville · 28/11/2020 13:01

I had this today too. I like wearing white and a dog, only a poodle so it wasn't going to knock me down or anything, jumped on me. The owner said sorry and commented on how she only wears old clothes and dark things on walks. So what? If you can't control your dog it shouldn't be off lead. I have dogs. They do not jump. It makes me so angry.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 28/11/2020 13:02

I love dogs but this pisses me off. Especially when out with our young kids, dogs bound over, jump up, knock them over and cover them in shit.
If your dog cant be trusted not to jump up, don't let it off in a public place!
