What is actually the difference between the Tiers?

iswhois · 26/11/2020 12:15

It seems that the only difference is pubs and restaurants being closed and no household mixing....

All shops and schools to be open across all 3

Hairdressers etc to be open

Is that it?

@pavoreal I can’t see where it says you can’t travel in and out of tier 3. As far as I can see it says you should avoid unnecessary journeys but you can travel for essential purposes in both tier 2 and tier 3.

Biker47 · 26/11/2020 13:02

@MereDintofPandiculation

Tier 3 shouldn't travel outside their area.

It means those of us who can't fit into a Christmas Bubble can't even travel to see people outside.

Says, "advised" i.e. unenforceable.
Tobebythesea · 26/11/2020 13:02

Probably a silly question but do the tiers not count at Christmas then for those few days?

Tobebythesea · 26/11/2020 13:03

If it’s advised only?

movingonup20 · 26/11/2020 13:04

It's all a mess, we are tier three but are in an area lower rate than Liverpool or London go figure

PavoReal · 26/11/2020 13:14

@mollypuss1 from the government website in the tier 3 bit:
avoid travelling to other parts of the UK, including for overnight stays other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities. You can travel through other areas as part of a longer journey

And from the Tier 2 section:
Avoid travel to or overnight stays in tier 3 areas other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities. You can travel through a tier 3 area as a part of a longer journey

I was wondering the same about the student travel window for coming home at Christmas.
pointythings · 26/11/2020 13:15

Looking at the list of who is where, my conclusion is that to be in Tier 1, you basically have to be a sheep living on a rock, sharing it only with a small patch of lichen.

KatnissNeverseen · 26/11/2020 13:17

I think they might as well do a lockdown until Christmas because making major cities like Liverpool and London tier 2 is going cause another spike in cases.

mollypuss1 · 26/11/2020 13:20

@PavoReal isn’t that what I said? You can travel from a tier 3 area for essential purposes.

Vanillaradio · 26/11/2020 13:21

Is it just advisory to not travel out of your tier 3 area or actually illegal? As we live about a mile from the county boundary and use all supermarkets, shops, facilities, parks etc over the border. Both counties tier 3

So sounds like Mum, who is in a tier 3 area now, can continue to be our childcare bubble provider in our tier 2 area. Good, or I'd have to quit my new job.

KiposWonderbeasts · 26/11/2020 13:22

Tier 2 can meet friends in the garden or outside hospitality venues, can go to gigs/sporting events/cinemas but with reduced capacity.

Tier 3 can get a takeaway to eat on their own and aren’t going anywhere.

All wording of it uses things like "advise" or "avoid", but nothing like forbidden or prohibited, and I believe there would have had to have been further legislation enacted to make it actually enforceable.
PizzaForOne · 26/11/2020 13:36

This link has a nice table at the bottom with summary of differences:

jellybe · 26/11/2020 17:15

Probably a stupid question but, I living in a tier three but work in a tier 2 (a 10 minute drive to the county board that divides us) my gym is also by where I work in a tier 2 so does that mean I can't go to my gym as I live in tier three?

SueEllenMishke · 26/11/2020 17:19

Those who own pubs and restaurants in tier 3 are royally fucked. That's that's the main difference.
It's a disgrace.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 26/11/2020 17:21

My Christmas decorations are in MIL’s attic in tier 3 & we’re in tier 2.
I’m not sure I can class picking up my Christmas tree as an essential journey.......

Toddlersareirrational · 26/11/2020 17:34

Do all the same rules apply during the Christmas period? Can households form a bubble across tiers between the 23rd and 27th?

PurpleDaisies · 26/11/2020 17:39

Can households form a bubble across tiers between the 23rd and 27th?

Yes, in accordance to the Christmas bubble rules. You can see people outside your Christmas bubble according to your local tier rules.

I’m disappointed because I can’t fit in the family bubble and I can’t leave my tier 3 area to see them in another part of the U.K.

Toddlersareirrational · 26/11/2020 17:39

Nevermind, found the info now, you can mix tiers for your Christmas bubbles.
