www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/sikh-boy-attacked-video-telford-b1761683.html

I despair that these incidents continue to happen. AIBU to think we need a new approach to racial bullying in schools?

Genuine question, given that they are saying it is a hate crime what will happen to the offenders given they are children?

I didn't post the link with the video as it is really distressing to watch and may be triggering for some Sad

It should not matter they are children, they are of an age to understand what they have done and should be prosecuted. I doubt they will be as racism is rife in the UK and there is always an excuse as to why it occurs. I despair as it appears schools are no better than the late 80s and 90s when I was there. It’s unacceptable!

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 26/11/2020 09:52

That's so awful. Poor boy. Hope their parents are utterly disgusted and I hope the police prosecute. My son was punched in the face at school and the boy ended up with the police at the door who gave him a warning as he had never been in trouble before, but said next time he will have a criminal record and this is much worse than that.

Bigyellowflowers · 26/11/2020 10:17

This is what gets to me, all the glossy PR messaging and education to schools and it would seem we are no further forward than we were 20 years ago.

I just want to find that boy and give him a big hug Sad

Well someone’s names the boys who done it on YouTube so the police are going to be the least of there problems...

SerendipityJane · 26/11/2020 10:29

Let the kids off, jail their parents.

contrmary · 26/11/2020 10:33

Let the kids off, jail their parents.

Better, jail the kids and the parents.

Flowerpot345 · 26/11/2020 10:41

Unfortunately school bullying is rife no matter what colour you are, kids thinking they are big and clever attacking other kids whilst their friends film.
Bullying needs to be properly tackled within schools particularly filming of the victim, it's disgusting.
I know in my son's school if someone attacks you and you push them off you you get in trouble also, they literally expect kids to lay there and get beaten it's terrible.
The punishments never fit the crime.

SerendipityJane · 26/11/2020 10:49

@contrmary

Good idea. Parents get released when their kids have stopped being racist thugs.
NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 26/11/2020 10:51

Let the kids off, jail their parents.

Really? You got that much faith in your own kids????

Bigyellowflowers · 26/11/2020 12:42

Will those boys get a criminal record and expulsion from school? really don't know how this works.

I hope the victim doesn't have to face them everyday in school. That would be horrific.

The reason I ask is perhaps deterrent is the only way to get through the message that there are consequences. We've tried the softly softly education and information approach maybe it's now time to say

'right, if you engage in this behaviour this is what is going to happen: you will end up with a criminal record, explusion, etc.' Presumably this would also place the family on the radar of social services?

But then would these kids care? really don't know.

Given police have launched a race hate probe, it's likely the boy was targeted because of his Sikh faith.

Meraas · 26/11/2020 13:29

They also laughed when his Patka came off, which shows that was their objective. Racist bullying.

GreyishDays · 26/11/2020 13:30

I wonder how old they all are. Seems different if they’re 11 compared to 17. I haven’t watched the video which might make it clear.

We really are further along. It would not have been news 20 years ago.

I hope he's OK. And the scrotes are punished!

Tonkerbea · 26/11/2020 13:34

I saw it this morning and was really shaken by it, I can't begin to imagine how that poor boy felt. I think its yet another reminder that there isn't an under current of racism in the UK, it's out there for all to see. On our streets, comments on gravy ads, local Facebook groups. I want to protect my brown children from racism, but it's insidious.

Meraas · 26/11/2020 13:34

I disagree, it's not acceptable at 11 or 17.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/11/2020 13:35

This is utterly heartbreaking. Sad to say I'm not surprised - racism in the UK is shockingly rife.

PizzaForOne · 26/11/2020 13:35

Tory Brexit UKIP Britain emboldening them all

There's no such thing as an evil racist genie that gets into kids heads when they sleep.

Racism starts in the home.

I didn’t say it was acceptable.

The question was what should happen to the offenders.

BiBabbles · 26/11/2020 13:59

Racism starts in the home.

It can start in the home. It can also start in the community. Social institutions and systems can embed messages quite different from home life.

Same as being not-racist or anti-racist or any other form of oppression. Parents are an ever shrinking part of the moral and personality pie.

DeRigueurMortis · 26/11/2020 14:00

That video is truly awful.

Those boys were so vicious in their attack.

I'm left struggling to comprehend how children that young can behave with such aggression.

There is no excuse for such behaviour and it's undeniably racially motivated.

These children have learned somewhere that racism is acceptable and the responsibility for that lies with their parents in either fostering that belief or not countering it.

Should they be expelled? In my view yes because I don't see why the victim in should have to share a school environment with people who've attacked him.

Do I think expulsion is enough? No. This was a serious assault and I'd like the police press charges, the boys see the inside of a juvenile detention facility and the parents fined.

Zero tolerance for this. I don't care how old they are, they could have killed him with those repeated blows to the head.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 26/11/2020 14:10

Racism starts in the home.

Possibly true... to a degree. It comes from school and their friends too. With that in mind, I'll ask again: would you be prepared to go to jail for the actions of your children?

I certainly wouldn't!
