...so many people seem to think "incase" "inbetween" and "infront" are words?

See also "alot" and "abit".

Where has this come from??

I'm probably BU, but it drives me potty.

And yes, I should have put a comma between "incase" and "inbetween". Blush

clpsmum · 25/11/2020 22:12

I thought inbetween was a word tbh 🤦‍♀️ should of is the one that infuriates me

LividLaughLurve · 25/11/2020 22:13

“Alot” is genuinely so grating to me that if a serious post features it, I have to scroll down to hide it on the page to stop myself raging at the poster’s idiocy (often on a thread where I should be feeling sympathy for whatever hideous issue they’re posting about).

Also "infact".

FlatulentSproutEater · 25/11/2020 22:23

I never understand why the people who think 'abit' and 'alot' to be correct never write 'alittle' as well. Complete lack of any kind of thinking I suppose.

But then albeit and moreover are words. Funny old thing the English language.

Isn't it?

Also: inasmuch.

OP posts:
StanfordPines · 25/11/2020 22:29

I didn’t know that inasmuch was a word. I shall use it, and store it in my brain should I ever get called up to be on Pointless. (In my mind Pointless is like jury duty, you just find out you are going to be on it one day and you must have a good stock of facts just in case).

PenguinErector · 25/11/2020 22:31

I'm almost sure that we used "alot" at primary school in the 90's. So much so that I was confused when I discovered it wasn't a standard real word!

I still thought in-between and incase were words though?!

Grin I love this idea.

You can use "insofar" as well. (But not "aswell".)

They're really not (although I suppose you could use "in-between" as a sort of composite adjective).

Encase is a word; I'm not sure whether (note the "h") that is the root of the confusion.

I stand corrected, quick search and the definitions (or lack of rather) appeared.

And I consider myself reasonably practiced in spelling/grammar too 🤦‍♀️😂

Um... it's practised.

Sorry.

I remember being surprised that "outwith" is only really used in Scotland and the north of England. I use it all the time.

FlumpetCrumpet · 25/11/2020 23:31

I think there's perhaps two camps here and I think I may have a buttock in each. On the one hand when people commonly misuse or misspell words it can be irritating but on the other hand that's what makes a language interesting. Some words come into use through misunderstanding and others stop being used at all. I think to insist that everyone be correct at all times would be to draw a line in the sand and mark the English language as complete as at today's date. That seems lacking in beauty

Nunoftheother · 25/11/2020 23:44

@FlumpetCrumpet - I do like that point of view, a lot (!) although I would say that there are many, many ways in which language can be interesting and beautiful other than through use of inaccuracies and errors.
