To think Christmas cards are becoming a thing of the past.

Hi all, bit of a random one.

I have fond memories of my grandmother (she is 80 and still does it now) writing hundreds of Christmas cards for friends, relatives, colleagues (now old colleagues) amongst others. She would literally have piles of them and equally she would have hundreds of cards around her front room at Christmas. She’s always laid them out so neatly but so many 😅

The only cards I seem to have in the house at Christmas are either from older relatives, immediate family and for the kids from the kids friends at school!

I don’t really exchange cards with any of my friends! I write them cards but many of them just don’t do it themselves (which is fine of course!)

So is it becoming more of an old fashioned thing to send cards to everyone you know?

I will be sending out cards to immediate family and a few elderly relatives or family friends as I know they really like it but other than that I probably won’t bother?

Aibu?

I can never be bothered with them, but they seem to be a big deal to some people. Same with birthday cards. I still have loads in the house, because I feel too guilty to throw them away.

BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 25/11/2020 14:09

I still send Christmas cards Smile

Yanbu.
I buy the individual ones for immediate family GPS etc. As I know they all keep them in keepsakes.
I prob write maybe 10 on top of that. Like dh work, ndn etc.

I used to write prob around 60 and thought wtf it's just crap. I was paying more on stamps than the cards. Was sending to people we rarely see.

Dd and I made loads of cards the other week which we'll give to GPS etc.
I haven't even brought any multi box cards this Yr. Will use up the few I have in the loft.

ImNotCutOutForThis · 25/11/2020 14:12

I also stopped with one friend as she said she puts her straight into the bin as they look crap against her Xmas decor in her house.!

lioncitygirl · 25/11/2020 14:13

We send out about 40 a year.

IrmaFayLear · 25/11/2020 14:14

People can send or not send them.

But FGS don’t say piously that you are “donating to charity” instead. Crap. I don’t believe you. And even worse saying you aren’t sending cards “to save the environment”. Just look outside the window at your astroturf and inside at your Wayfair-y house and decide whether you may be being a teensy bit hypocritical.

giantangryrooster · 25/11/2020 14:19

Haven't sent any for years, but then I'm not British and you seem to have a really weird and close relationship with cards Grin.

Yes quite.

I save more cardboard & packaging by not having a weekly takeaway than I’d ever use on sending a few cards to people I love and care about.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 25/11/2020 14:25

I still write and send cards to my family. My dc send them to their friends. It probably adds up to about 40 or 50 cards altogether. I just get the cheapo multi-packs from the supermarket and don't pay any postage because we hand deliver them: I don't know anyone far enough away that I have to put a stamp on! I love receiving cards too and it would be a shame if or when it stops being a thing.

AngryFishes · 25/11/2020 14:26

I don't do advent candles because they contribute to global warming.

I didn't know that and never sent Thank you cards after my wedding. Long time ago. Still wonder if there was a thread about me here...😂 Now I have stack if cards for any occasion 😁 I should put that on my British passport application 😂
AntsInPenzance · 25/11/2020 14:54

If people want cards as decorations, couldn't they just buy a box and put them up? Saves stamp money and you get ones you like.

MondeoFan · 25/11/2020 14:58

I like sending cards and receiving them. I think they add to the Xmas decor on the wall. Wouldn't be as nice without any up I don't think. One year I got a lot of white ones and another year a lot of red so looked great on the wall

Bargebill19 · 25/11/2020 15:01

I’m down to three cards. Any which arrive are recycled straight away - they are a fire hazard with cats in our home. A text is just fine - if you want to wish happy Christmas. But as we don’t celebrate anyway - I’m really happy to not receive anything. !

Nope.

No because then they wouldn't be from people who've thought of you and sent you one would they? I think it's nice to think oh that's a nice card and it's off... I love cards and nice cards mean more to me than a present when its my birthday too and I especially like them dropping on the doormat, nice to receive

FatimaMunchy · 26/11/2020 07:15

I think birthday cards are nice because the person has had to take the trouble to remember your birthday.

TheGlitterFairy · 26/11/2020 07:28

I send Christmas cards - half way through writing them now and various piles of them on the table!!
I’ve sent a couple of traditional advent calendars too and have an advent candle myself.

Flev · 26/11/2020 08:46

I only send them to people I won't see in the few weeks before Christmas. So I'll be sending a lot more this year!

swansongs · 26/11/2020 08:58

Not keen on sending Xmas cards to people I see regularly anyway. I do send them to people who live far away or overseas - as a way of keeping in touch.
