AIBU to ask how much a new bathroom costs?

AIBU to not know how much a new bathroom would cost? Totally clueless about most DIY (as is DH for anything complicated). We are thinking of a new bathroom but have no idea how much such a thing would cost! It’s a pretty small room but would need completely remodelling/new bathroom suite/tiles etc etc

I expect we would go low/mid range rather than high end.

I realise this is a bit of a ‘how long is a piece of string’ type question but ballpark how much should we budget for a new bathroom? £3K? £5K? Genuinely have no idea and the websites are all baffling 🙈

I'm looking too a suite is cheap enough. It's the Labour. I'm hopi f 3 k or less but the plumber never bloody sends his quote!

GiraffeNecked · 24/11/2020 07:41

We’ve just spent £9k on the family bathroom.

(£25k in total including 2 bathrooms, new hot water cylinder, 3 new radiators and new pipe work upstairs and a velux).

I’ll post a photo of the quote. It’s reasonable quality stuff.

Piglet89 · 24/11/2020 07:42

I recently totted up the total cost of bathroom fittings and fixtures for my auntie. For “traditional” style (which I think tends to be more expensive) that all came to about £1200 from Victorian Plumbing. Then labour and anything unexpected...I’d probably budget 3-4K I think.

Piglet89 · 24/11/2020 07:43

There’s also a decent historical thread on how to get a new bathroom...

It really depends on the sanitary ware and fittings. You can pay as little as £200 for a bath or £1000 +. DIY merchants often sell complete suites for a few hundred pounds. To get a ball park figure on fittings have a look on line at the cost for the style you want.
Tiles can also vary widely in costs. You might have to factor in the cost of an electrician to provide down lights, shaving socket and illuminated mirror, should you want them.

GiraffeNecked · 24/11/2020 07:48

Here’s the total for one, it included drilling a hole in the wall for a fan and new fan.

The suite will cost from £300 to £££, tiles cost whatever you are willing to pay, labour is from around £150 a day. Go to the store and get an idea of the suites you like, ditto tiles then call around and see prices for installers near you, generally independent self employed are cheaper than companies.

userxx · 24/11/2020 07:49

£1100 for the bathroom suite, £1200 to fit it and the tiles were about £200 I think. It definitely came in under £3k.

Pipandmum · 24/11/2020 07:49

Is it a totally new bathroom (turning a bedroom in to a bathroom)? Where's the plumbing? Is it going to be near an existing waste pipe? Where do you live? Are you doing any work (tiling etc)? Are the floor joists strong enough for the weight of a full bath?
Cost of your tiles and suite can range from 100s to thousands, but I'd figure £5000 up. And closer to £10,000 wouldn't be outrageous depending on a variety of factors.
Over ten years ago I asked for a quote on replacing and fitting out an existing shower - not room, just the shower, and well known firm came back with £10,000 NOT including tiles. This was in affluent part of SW London. I thought he was out of his mind. I then got a whole new bathroom in a spot without drains for £5000 all in about 70 miles outside.

Themanofmydreams · 24/11/2020 07:49

We've had a quote and it's just under £5k North Yorkshire

SimplyRadishing · 24/11/2020 07:51

3-5k should be more than enough.
I didn't move things about plumbing was and did one for 2k (super cheap suite from betterbathrooms)

movingonup20 · 24/11/2020 07:51

Ps took my dad 6 days to install mine (separate bath and shower, quite large, lots of tiles) he didn't charge me for labour but he would charge a customer about £1000 labour

Coldilox · 24/11/2020 07:52

We’re just getting quotes at the moment. Small bathroom (shower over bath rather than separate). Mid range suite. We’re looking at around £6k including all parts, labour etc. May be a little less if the walls don’t need re-plastering. This includes fitting an extractor fan as we don’t have one currently.

userxx · 24/11/2020 07:53

@GiraffeNecked Jesus, the guy I used did more or less everything on your quote for a fraction of the cost. I struck lucky.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 24/11/2020 07:53

My sister has just had three quotes, £5k, £7k and £12k. Standard family bathroom with tiling and flooring, bath, over bath shower, toilet, sink, towel radiator. Including fitting.

So it varies hugely. Wickes was the cheapest and an independent guy was the most expensive.

user1471457354 · 24/11/2020 07:54

We replaced a small bathroom and we were around 3.5k, this included replacing a hot water cylinder. We initially wanted to tile the whole bathroom but this was working out quite expensive so to take the cost down we only tiled around the bath/shower and painted the rest

SpillingTheTea · 24/11/2020 07:56

It depends. Shop around as people do stuff for half the price but I'd say 5k is a reasonable amount for a standard.
Luckily my FIL and brother are good at these sort of things so would only be materials. Labour is the most expensive part.

DarceyDashwood · 24/11/2020 07:59

This is all very useful information thank you!!!

It is remodelling an existing bathroom - but want to rip out the unit that holds the sink and loo and have free standing ones.

New bath (old one is horrendously uncomfortable for if you’re a short arse like me) with shower over it. New tiles and flooring.

We need a new shower but seems pointless doing that as a short term fix if we want the whole room redone

I hate organising stuff like this 😬🙈

We got several quotes all about the same ....(well one that was about £10k more....hmmm)

There was a lot of pipe work to remove and move, ceiling needed stripping, tanks removed.....but I was quite shocked by the quotes.

They’ve been fantastic though. And did it all, plastering, new stud wall, electrics. The shower is quite fancy too.

ShopTattsyrup · 24/11/2020 08:35

My mothers was around 6k very recently but that included digging up the concrete floor because the soil pipe was cracked and leaking underneath. The actual bathroom including suite, half tiling round the bath, plastering and new floor tiles was around 4k. small bathroom at a guess I'd say around 8 - 10 ft square.

Properbobbins · 24/11/2020 09:33

I paid around £6k a year ago, was an existing bathroom but needed things moving around. That included plastering. Things that increased the price was having it fully tiled - walls and floor - and I wanted a specific mirror cabinet that was expensive but brings me joy every day. Wickes would probably be a good place to start.

MiddleClassMother · 24/11/2020 16:55

My family bathroom cost me just under 12k. The en-suite was only 3k.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/11/2020 16:57

We spent about 7-8k but that included getting a new boiler fitted.

NewlyGranny · 24/11/2020 16:58

£7k 4 years ago from Bathstore. Not cheap but worth every penny. Included a new false wall and shifting all the piping.

NewlyGranny · 24/11/2020 17:00

If you love a hot bath, spend the extra to get the insulated tub so you can linger longer. It doesn't show but you will feel the benefit.
