AIBU to ask neighbour to adjust light?

We have some independent living flats for elderly people next door which were built 8 years ago. They have just installed dazzling outside lighting which remains on all night. It feels quite intrusive.
Would I be unreasonable asking them to make light less dazzling in nightime hours? I have velux windows which are now brightly illuminated all night. Alternatively, should I just suck it up and get blackout blinds put on velux windows instead?

I would talk.to the Housing Association and ask.if the intensity or angle of the lights can be changed.

I installed lights at the front of my property and neighbours opposite politely asked me to adjust. We all spent an evening readjusting to everyone’s satisfaction and privacy, job done. I think a politely worded request will mean any reasonable person would and should oblige.

How much does it cost to get blackout blinds installed on Velux? Are those Windows in your bedroom? In a bedroom with velux, I would say the blinds are essential.

Yes, the velux windows are in my bedroom. I have always enjoyed being able to look up at the stars at ight through them. I haven't priced up getting blackout blinds for them yet. It looks like something I will need to do ASAP!

Yes, I am thinking of asking if the brightness could be reduced. It is a private nursing home that has semi independent living flats attached. I am thinking that it maybe dazzling to some of the elderly flat occupants as well. I'm not sure what the aim of the lights are. It's not a high crime area. It seems doubtful that the elderly residents, many of which are quite frail, would be wanting to go outside in the dead of night.

Just talk to them. Why would they have lights on all night? Surely they should be off from say 10ish.... what a waste of money.

Even councils buy street lights that angle the street lights down. Otherwise its not only a waste of resources but also contributes to light pollution.

We have blinds on our Velux windows. They are great and block out all the light.

MrsClatterbuck · 24/11/2020 08:01

Recently the lights on our development have been replaced to down lighting ones. Tbh we didn't notice at first but I now realise that at night there is no longer any light shining into the ensuite through the velux window. We had blackout blinds on the velux windows in our former house and they do work very well.

HailFairy · 24/11/2020 08:01

Definitely talk to them first & see if there’s anything they can do.

However blackout blinds for velux are relatively inexpensive, easy to fit, very effective & unobtrusive so the good news is you have an alternative solution if the care home aren’t helpful.

When we moved into our house the neighbour opposite mentioned that our light shone straight into their house all night. Same day, I climbed a ladder and fixed it. Took 2 seconds and he was so appreciative.

I'd just ask. X

contrmary · 24/11/2020 08:40

Politely ask them. If they refuse, offer a tenner and a can of black spray paint to the local teens that hang around and get them to do the job for you.

This!

My opposite neighbours had the same. I asked them to address it and they did.

It’s not ok to have nuisance lighting and I don’t want black out blinds, I don’t like it pitch black.

Notcontent · 24/11/2020 08:56

Do raise it. Light pollution is a growing problem and it needs to be challenged.

Thank you all. I have rung and spoken to the manager of the nursing home. He said he'd try and adjust the angles of the new lights, which is great. He said that brightness can't be reduced. They are LEDs, so naturally bright and not adjustable. He says they must remain on all night as a security measure. He claimed that they had been broken into 3 times. This last fact is a surprise as it is such a sleepy town where crime is rare.

Glad he is going to look at helping. If it doesn't work go back to him.....how many of us leave security lights on all night? That's just crazy. Motion sensor lights yes. Floodlights no. Who pays for the facility because if it's public funds e.g. your local council, they will have environmental policies they should be following etc

It's a private nursing home with semi independent living flats attached, so it isn't the council who own the place. The nursing home apparently don't mind funding the cost of the light blazing all night! I have just bumped into a neighbour who also rang the nursing home owner today independently. It's not just me who is affected by this! They appear to have altered the angle of the lights to go more downwards already, which is great. Hoping it won't be so bad tonight!
