To be surprised that the Royal Mail Christmas stamps are all religious?

I thought for a change I'd get proper Christmas stamps this year. Didn't expect them to be all religious and no choice!

Is this usually what's on offer? I don't object personally, but I think most of those I send to won't care for a religious stamp.

You do know Christmas is a religious festival - don't you? The clue is in the name...

Oh please.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 23/11/2020 15:45

Though as a practicing Christian it’s good to see that the religious aspect of Christmas is bring acknowledged (and yes I know we borrowed the date from the pagans - just like Easter)

Same goes for me, too Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/11/2020 15:45

Why do you still call it Christmas then? Call it a New PS5 day if you don't give a flying .... and don't offend all the Christians

Try saying Happy Holidays and see all the happy Christians. Not.

speakout · 23/11/2020 15:46

And Easter is called such because????

A clue- the goddess Oestre.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 23/11/2020 15:47

If the Christians are offended, good. I've been offended all my life by Christians and Christianity, I hope they are bloody offended
But theres hardly any of them left, so who gives a fuck?

Cheers for that. You're full of the joys, aren't ya?

There are plenty of us left btw Grin

thecatsthecats · 23/11/2020 15:47

Robins are the most appropriate stamp, because robins became associated with Christmas because the postmen were called Red Breasts.

(Me, get that from QI? Never heard of it!)

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 23/11/2020 15:48

And, I'm not offended. You were right, I don't give a fuck. Why would I?

stampsurprise · 23/11/2020 15:48

@LivingOnAnIsland

You know where the Christ in Christmas comes from?
Oh yes I know rather a lot about Christianity. I just thought since non-religious cards were available (some of which may or may not use the word "Christmas") there may be stamps to match.

I find it hard to believe the RM are really all that religious. Do they check they aren't sending presents to people's mistresses for instance? No they don't really care 😂

I didn't know about the postmen! 😍

@BigFiveMama

**It isn't. 95% of people who christmas couldn't give a flying fuck about Jesus. It's a secular holiday.

Why do you still call it Christmas then? Call it a New PS5 day if you don't give a flying .... and don't offend all the Christians.

Because your predecessors said "call it Christmas unless you want to get burned alive" Killing non-believers was a popular Christian tradition in the cuddly wuddly Jesus religion until we put a stop to it.

Not that I care about the stamps but I care about that kind of twisting of history.

stampsurprise · 23/11/2020 15:49

Interesting it was nearly stamped out here once.

No pun intended 😂😂😂😂

FudgeDrudge

I'd love to hear some examples of how Christians have offended you? Genuinely interested.

ImNotMeImSomeoneElse · 23/11/2020 15:50

Stephen Fry comes to mind.

It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what

I'm not sure why you have been offended so much by people that are Christian, but 'So fucking what'. Doesn't change a damn thing.

Beause that's what its called. Hmm

You are so wrong there. But hey, carry on as you were.
MrsTerryPratchett · 23/11/2020 15:51

Maybe all the miserable Christians (not the ones I know in real life, who are delightful) should get together and decide which is most offensive:

'Cancelling Christmas' calling it the holidays and just having the lovely secular aspects and those who want to go to Church do. OR

Calling the season Christmas but acknowledging that many don't share the religious aspects and acting accordingly.

You don't get option three:

Imposing your religion on everyone just because you want to.

stampsurprise · 23/11/2020 15:52

Turns out sales of religious stamps lead to a slump that year for RM.

Hmm, Christmas is now a Christian festival? 😮

Well bugger me, I'd never have guessed🤦🏻‍♀️

SATSmadness · 23/11/2020 15:53

We're a Christian household and I'm actually disappointed at the second class stamps Madonna and Child image as I felt we needed some cheery robins and snowmen this year to jolly us all up a bit.

ZoeCM · 23/11/2020 15:55

I genuinely can't understand how Christians can feel comfortable celebrating a holiday they stole from the pagans in the first place. "Thou shalt not steal" is one of the Ten Commandments, FFS!

ancientgran · 23/11/2020 15:56

Try saying Happy Holidays and see all the happy Christians. I'm a Christian and I'm not bothered if you want to say happy holidays. In my time I've been to pagan, Jewish and Hindu celebrations during the holiday season as well as Christian celebrations. If you want the post office to issue stamps with a Pagan, Hanukkah or Diwali theme then maybe ask them to do it and then send Pagan, Hanukkah or Diwali cards.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/11/2020 15:56

That's not a very nice post, FudgeDrudge; I've little time for organised religion myself (Christianity included) but I wouldn't willingly offend them - after all they're entitled to their views too

It would also have been interesting to see how long your post would have lasted, had it been about any other religion ...

ancientgran · 23/11/2020 15:57

I genuinely can't understand how Christians can feel comfortable celebrating a holiday they stole from the pagans in the first place When was the pagan winter festival the 25th December?

speakout · 23/11/2020 15:57

*Hmm, Christmas is now a Christian festival? 😮

Well bugger me, I'd never have guessed🤦🏻‍♀️*

Not a christian festival in my house.

ancientgran · 23/11/2020 15:59

Stephen Fry comes to mind. Oh yes he wants us to all bow down to him. I think he annoys me just as much as Jesus seems to annoy non Christians.

poorbuthappy · 23/11/2020 16:01

@MrsTerryPratchett

Before it was pagan, what was it?

It was 'everyone is miserable, we're a bit worried the sun won't come back, I'm pissed off and hungry. Let's eat something nice, bring oil lamps/candles/fire into the hut and put some evergreens around so it's less depressing'' Day

Sounds tremendous,
