To ask how multicultural is the area you live in?

I'm seriously considering moving out of london, I'm mixed race and also have to DS's who are due to go onto secondary school in a couple of years.
With all the knife crime and violence going on I'm terrified they will get caught up in it all once they get a little older.

So I would like to get some information on where would be good to move to. I know it sounds awful, but I don't want them to be the only black child in the class as I do want them to have people around them who they cam also relate too, so where do you live and is it multicultural?

@Herja

Bristol. I'd describe it as friendly and mlticultural.
Seconded! It's a wonderful place to live.

Cambridge is very diverse and a fab place to live. We're CB1 and love it here. The train into London is quick too so it doesn't feel too daunting a move out of London.

AliceMck · 24/11/2020 11:15

Get a few places in mind and check out the school websites and ofstead reports. They will tell you the mix of ethnicity within the school.

ims0rrydarlingg · 24/11/2020 11:26

I grew up in a large town in the Midlands and although it was multicultural, in my primary school class there was one black girl and in high school maybe 4 mixed race children.

I’ve now moved to a place in Hertfordshire close to London which is very multicultural.

mummytonicekidz · 24/11/2020 11:28

We live in a mostly white area. There is one black child at my dc nursery.
One black Muslim child at my school Christian school. Maybe two or three Asian children ( siblings) attend too. We are semi rural .

LakieLady · 24/11/2020 11:29

@LaLaLanded, a couple I know have recently moved away from Oxted in Surrey because of the number of black kids in the local secondary school.

They're out and out racists, so that number could be quite small, but it's clearly becoming more diverse.

OneTC · 24/11/2020 11:39

I was in oxted yesterday and there was a group of kids having a mini standoff with the police at the station

The CSG tags around the village also make me laugh

gibberjabber · 07/06/2021 17:25

@LoveMyKidsAndCats do you mind me asking whereabouts in Oxford?

I'm in the same position as OP in terms of wanting to move to a multicultural area. I'm in Oxfordshire at the moment and have discounted Oxford as not diverse enough, in the main. So, I'm interested in the area(s) that you are referring to.

Depends on your definition of diverse. If you mean non white, the Borough I live in is very diverse.
But the school my DC attend, coupled with the bars and restaurants I frequent, as well as the sports clubs I am a member of are the antithesis of diverse. That said, if you meant non British rather than non white, then my circle is very diverse, lots of French, Spanish, Scandis, Italians, Americans, Antipodeans.

I’m in central London.

Completely understand your concerns.

My advice would be to look at major university towns. Not just anywhere with a university, but Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, etc - research-driven places that create their own micro-climate, generate employment and drive up the standard of local schools. A critical mass of well educated, international residents will make life much more comfortable for incomers.

(Frankly, in your case, you'd have been wise to prepare your sons well for independent school entrance exams - if they did well you'd probably have qualified for really hefty bursaries for each of them.)

(Oh, for goodness sake. Pretty much a zombie thread. Angry)

Reading. Multicultural. Access to countryside. Friendly people. Close to London.

Camomila · 07/06/2021 18:18

We're in Brighton, its fairly multicultural walking around but we have had to make a conscious effort to find multicultural nurseries/schools for the DC as some are very white (DC are mixed race)

I'm in rural Surrey and I'm afraid that as you might expect, we are not a multicultural place at all, I v rarely see any ethnic minorities when I'm out and about

jellybeansforbreakfast · 07/06/2021 18:35

I live in a rural, small market town in the Central/SouthWest region and we have a wide variety of differing nationalities. Until fairly recently they were mostly white, Eastern European etc, as most came as seasonal workers.

But over the last 5 or so years there has been a greater influx of black and Asian families. So even out here in the boonies we are becoming much more multicultural an the local larger towns and cities have a much better mix.

Don't rely on the perceptions of people who are not local, have a wander out and see what places look like.

South Wales, and it’s the least ethnically diverse place I’ve ever lived.

Swansea, Cardiff, Newport lot more diverse though. Smaller towns are not and it’s very noticeable to me.

Not little North Welsh villages then! We have a single black family in the village. The dad is the local driving instructor, the two teenage boys go to the local school. Not sure about mum. We have a few Eastern European families. There’s 3 gay couples. Everyone else is white and almost all of them are Welsh and related to the rest of the village!
