Citraloplam

Jumpingjosephene21 · 22/11/2020 17:49

I've been taking citraloplam for 2 weeks now. I haven't noticed any change at all. I had slight headaches the first week but now nothing in the way of side effects or a change in my anxiety. I was only prescribed 10mg to start with as this is my first time on any type of medication. I just wonder if they are doing anything at all to me? Is it possible I need a higher dose or should I give it more time? I would have thought by 2 weeks it would have gotten into my system but maybe I'm wrong?

I started to feel better between 2-4 weeks. Give it another week or so and if you're still feeling nothing then go back to your GP - they'll probably tell you hang on for a bit longer if you call now anyway. I know how frustrating it is but unfortunately SSRIs do tend to take a little while to work their magic. Good luck and I hope you start to feel better soon.

MorganKitten · 22/11/2020 17:58

It takes around a month to work

ThatsNotYourPassword · 22/11/2020 18:00

I’ve also found it to be a good drug. It really helped my depression- thank goodness.
Give it a bit longer, but also go back to GP to discuss it if you need to. Maybe an increase in dose will help.
I was on 10mg, then 20 mg for a while - but it affected my sleep. I’ve been back on 10 mg for ages and intend to stay on it

OscarWildesCat · 22/11/2020 18:02

I felt better around week 5-6, gradually just realised I wasn’t feeling so anxious and down. Stick with it.

ShalomToYouJackie · 22/11/2020 18:02

Most SSRIs, including Citalopram won't make any difference for 4-6 weeks. Give it a bit of time

Sparklingbrook · 22/11/2020 18:05

I almost gave up at the point you are at thinking what's the point, but after another 2 weeks I suddenly noticed how much brighter I was feeling. They really helped after that.

TMIincoming · 22/11/2020 18:05

It takes more than two weeks to notice any benefit, and more like 6 to 8 to get the full benefit.

Stick with it, especially if you aren't getting any side effects.

10mg is also quite a low dose

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 22/11/2020 18:10

as other have suggested, two weeks isn't long enough - but also there's no magic "it's working" - one day you recognise that you don't feel quite as bad & life is in colour again.

Thischarmlessgirl · 22/11/2020 18:12

I’m a mental health professional, you should have a review around 4 weeks in, if still no difference the Dr should increase to 20mg.

AhFiddledeedee · 22/11/2020 18:16

Give it at least a month, and then speak to your gp if you're not better.

I started on 20mg, and there was no lightbulb moment, one day I just noticed that I hadn't cried for a few days. (I was crying at least once a day beforehand) but I wasnt quite there so was upped to 30mg, not likely to change anytime soon. But I'm not utterly miserable anymore, so that's nice Grin

Jumpingjosephene21 · 22/11/2020 18:20

Thanks all I guess I'm being impatient. Mine is more for anxiety and specifically the physical symptoms of anxiety (panic attacks etc) and they have been just as bad.

My mood maybe has improved slightly but I was hoping for a magic cure to stop the anxiety and panic but that hasn't happened yet.

6 weeks for me. Was INCREDIBLE for my anxiety and depression but absolutely nuked my sex drive so alas, i had to come off it.

NorthernChinchilla · 22/11/2020 19:06

I'm nearly 5 weeks in, total AD newbie (been such a fab year)...definite improvement after a few weeks, but had another dip, got GP to increase from 20 to 30 earlier this week.
Possibly wasnt necessary as from about Friday this week I'm back to 'me'- I can feel it and my husband has said he's got me back.
I had horrific side effects the first week, now it's just a degree of insomnia that I expected owing to upping the dose, have some pills for and will expect to tail off.
Sadly you just have to hang on for a bit, hut I totally understand why so many people give them up in the first few weeks.
Mine has been in conjunction with counselling, not sure if you've got that too?

Jumpingjosephene21 · 22/11/2020 20:44

I've had CBT but it's done nothing for me unfortunately. I'm really hoping that I start to see a difference in the physical symptoms and panic attacks as these are what I find most debilitating and stop me from going out and doing things.

10mg is nothing. I take 40mg. Used to be on 60mg until doctor told me they could no longer prescribe 60mg and 40mg was the highest now allowed.

Mixedupworld · 22/11/2020 20:50

Forgot to say, I've been on it for over 12 years.

Jumpingjosephene21 · 22/11/2020 21:00

My anxiety is strange in the sense that if I'm home I'm usually ok. But having to go certain places or deal with certain situations brings on panic that manifested itself in a lot of physical symptoms. For this reason someone recommended beta blockers would work better for me but my GP seemed reluctant to do that. So I guess maybe I'm a bit skeptical about citraloplam working at all. I know I need to give it a fair chance but I just really wanted to feel better and more able to do stuff quickly.

Aw OP. I was in your shows very recently and was prescribed citalopram almost 8 weeks ago, my main issue being the physical anxiety symptoms (they were totally taking over and I was struggling to function like o normally would) I was increased to 20mg after 2 weeks and 40 mg at 6 weeks and I have my 8 week review tomorrow and I definitely can see an improvement from where I started. Give it some time and check in with your Gp :)

ShalomToYouJackie · 22/11/2020 21:35

Beta blockers are fantastic for panic attacks. Be open minded with the Citalopram and give it a go but I would ask for Propranolol for panic attacks. I'm someone who has anxiety but it comes on in intense attacks rather than every day worrying. If I take one before a situation where I'd usually have an attack, or before I go to bed which is when they're usually bad, it completely stops it happening.

I'm pregnant now so I'm not taking them but they are a really good thing to have in the house/your handbag just incase. However, DP was prescribed 1-2 a day rather than taking as needed and it turned him into a zombie.

Jumpingjosephene21 · 22/11/2020 22:05

Yes mine is very much intense attacks rather than a constant feeling of unease. If I'm at home all day I will be fine. If I have to go and fulfil some sort of obligation or go to certain places I have full blown attacks that trigger a range of unpleasant physical symptoms.

I will see how I get on but I think I probably do need a higher dose.
