sports "colours" at school - anyone else remember this?

I went to a convent grammar school in the 80s. Certain girls from fourth year upwards (?) received, eg, "hockey colours" which were awarded in assembly and worn from then on - coloured ribbons tucked into the waistband about the same length as the skirt.
Sounds mad. Does this still happen? Does anyone else remember it? Does anyone's child at school now have "colours"?

The private girls school I went to didn't have them.as far as I remember, although as I was totally unsporty it might have gone over my head.

My DC went to our local comprehensive and the school did colours in the form of a metal badge which you pinned to your jumper. DS2 got awarded one as he used to compete at a national level, but refused to wear it as it "wasn't cool".

Not at my (State, comp) school, but had "colours" for sport at uni, (IIRC) half colours for being on the team and full if you represented the uni at a national competition. They were awarded under the auspice of the Student's Union (who sponsored all the sports clubs). No ribbons to wear on your jeans skirt, but different clubs offered different ways of marking. For our club you got a slightly different sports club sweatshirt. I think the rugby team had different coloured studs on their boots or something. Hang gliding offered actual ribbons to put on your glider (but they were just joking as they weren't a sports club and didn't do competitions).
