To ask neighbour if I can use his wifi?

Foliageeverywhere122 · 21/11/2020 17:36

Just moved into a new flat by myself.

The earliest I can get wifi is not until next Fri (and even that's with lots of pestering to sky..) .

Would I be a total CF to ask neighbour if it would be possible to use his wifi until then? I would be really happy to pay however much he thought was reasonable and thought I could give him my number so that if it turns out 2 people on it means it's too slow for him I would stop using it!

I honestly think I will go mad if I have to sit in silence for a week. I've been alone since march and (sad as it seems) I've really found having podcasts/netflix playing in the background makes me feel less lonely and anxious. I've had already had to pay for 8GB data but need to keep that for work - it should be just enough for next week with a couple of video calls but def not for anything else! No TV so I can't drown out the silence that way...

Those saying you’ve let neighbours share your WiFi and are accusing everyone who wouldn’t of being heartless/paranoid bastards - did your neighbour use streaming services every day, alongside video calls? It makes zero difference saying you have unlimited data, it’d still throttle your download speeds. DP and I are both working at home atm, we have great connections with fast speeds, and it’ll still crap out sometimes if we’re putting too much demand on it at the same time.

OP I do feel for you, but there are other solutions to your problem. For £30 you can buy a WiFi single, extend your own data, or get a half-decent radio; which would then give you flexibility and help if your internet craps out again.

x2boys · 21/11/2020 20:12

We recently had to move into temporary accommodation for two weeks whilst our house had essential work done, with no internet GiffGaff were doing a deal of 80 GB for £20 ,I have a nearly 14 year old who is never off the internet it lasted !

RichardMarxisinnocent · 21/11/2020 20:14

If you would be happy to pay your neighbour £30 for the use of their WiFi is there any reason why you couldn't instead use it to buy yourself a radio? Argos have several for under £30. Ready access to music and talk stations and no need to worry about whether you're being a cf or not.

Henio · 21/11/2020 20:15

Get a WiFi dongle like this one...
www.argos.co.uk/product/8839125
It's got 15gb of data already on it, only a little more than what you were going to offer your neighbour

AntiHop · 21/11/2020 20:16

Why aren't your work paying for your wifi?

neverenoughchelseaboots · 21/11/2020 20:19

I would definitely let someone. I'm very surprised by how strongly people are saying no and think it's cheeky.

PlantPotPat · 21/11/2020 20:21

Slightly at a tangent and I hate to be 'that poster' but it really shouldn't be referred to as 'kiddie porn' or 'child porn'. It's not. It's abusive images of children. Or child abuse images.

AlwaysLatte · 21/11/2020 20:22

Interesting how many people on this thread are ignorant of the danger of sharing your wifi password with a complete stranger who lives permanently within reach of it. It's quite a personal thing and very different to letting a known and trusted friend have it while they're visiting.

Happymum12345 · 21/11/2020 20:27

I think it’s fine if you offer to pay. I wouldn’t think twice if I was asked.

Candyfloss99 · 21/11/2020 20:33

If someone is using your WiFi it's very easy for someone to get in to your phone and everything on it so it's extremely risky to give a stranger your password. Buy a radio or TV or use the £30 to buy mobile data.

SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 20:34

No of course no ones going to give your their WiFi password.dont be ridiculous
Go online change your phone contract to unlimited data, use phone as hotspot for iPad etc

RedMarauder · 21/11/2020 20:39

OP if you live on your own and are in England who are you in a bubble with? As you should go to their house to use their WiFi for work purposes.

I have let a friend work in my home before using my WiFi as she had just moved pre-pandemic.

For leisure purposes go buy a DAB/FM radio and a TV you can connect to the buildings ariel so you can get Freeview. Then you will always have back up entertainment when your internet connection goes down, which happens on average a couple of days per year. (In some cases an entire area can go down at once.)

Christmasfairy2020 · 21/11/2020 20:43

Take 30 quid round in cash knock on door introduce yourself. Juat say I'm waiting for sky to come and install my broadband but it is another week. Could I possibly use yours until xxx date and I'll give you this money towards your bill? However I completely understand if this is not possible

SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 20:47

Of course I’d not share my password, and money or A sob story would incentivise me
Door knocking with £30 In hand is a spectacularly stupid suggestion

Icanflyhigh · 21/11/2020 20:48

Being totally honest, if my neighbour knocked on and asked me, I would just give them the WiFi code. I have no issues. Its a nice neighbourly thing to do.

IntoP20 · 21/11/2020 20:49

Rude to the extreme

SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 20:51

@Icanflyhigh are you genuinely that naive that’d you’d share your password it’s a security breach
It’s not a pint of milk, bag of pasta to be given out freely it’s your password

Starfish5 · 21/11/2020 20:53

Very CF and rude, especially if you’ve not even met them.

lockdownend · 21/11/2020 20:53

YABU. It’s coming across that you want to mooch off your neighbours WiFi rather than spend five minutes on google finding one of the many adorable solutions posters have suggested here.

It’s irrelevant whether you would pay. It’s irrelevant whether you would only use it for acceptable purposes. It’s irrelevant if you would stop using it as soon as you could. It’s irrelevant that you’d buy a nice gift after.

He doesn’t know these things, and he cannot (and should not) trust you. You simply saying “oh but I wouldn’t do that” is worthless.

You’d be introducing yourself as a cheeky fucker, getting off on the wrong foot from the start and putting him in a really awkward position.

Givemeabreak88 · 21/11/2020 20:53

Wow I’m really surprised someone would ask this I think it’s rude, just pay for Mobile data like the rest of us.

Casschops · 21/11/2020 20:53

We have just gone on 3 for 17.00 a month unlimited data. Its a 4g hub. I wouldn't give anyone my internet password.

Givemeabreak88 · 21/11/2020 20:53

And btw I would say no.

im5050 · 21/11/2020 20:57

EE do an unlimited business sim with unlimited internet texts and calls for £23 a month
3 do £30 a month unlimited internet & calls & texts
There are lots of unlimited internet sim only deals around

ScotchBunnet · 21/11/2020 20:57

If you were my neighbour I would let you and I wouldn’t accept any money. I think it’s important to try and live in a world where people do what they reasonably can to help one another.

Ask OP - the worst he can do is say no, and if it means he thinks you’re a CF it says more about his lack of empathy than it does about you.
