To ask for present ideas for 9 year old girl in hospital for months

Hello someone I know is poorly in hospital and a child. They are there long term and really struggling. They are washed by their mother using a bed bath type set up. I want to send her some lovely children's soap. Can I send a children's fun body wash for a bed bath, or no?
I can't find out online. Don't want to ask the parent. She is very busy. Her child is so so sick.

I want to get the girl some bits. She is 9 years old. Asleep a lot. Very delicate atm,

Pyjamas for a nine year old? What do girls like at that age?

Any present ideas?

I thought about a writing set gel pens but idk if she has the energy? I loved stuff like that SO much when I was 9. Would send stamps in as well she they can be posted

Thank you

I’ve just seen som hooded blankets in differ t designs, I liked the sloth ones.

Coffeeandcrumpet · 21/11/2020 09:23

A fun water bottle might go down well, or stickers. Think the idea of the arms for a tablet is awesome too. Sainsburys have some super soft pj's in at the moment too. Maybe some nice lip balm?

movingonup20 · 21/11/2020 09:43

I would get soap/wash suitable for babies like burts bees. Lip balm might be nice. Adult colouring book eg birds or flowers and nice pencils?

movingonup20 · 21/11/2020 09:45

And travel games are good eg guess who, connect 4.

Any toiletries may be problematic depending on her condition and treatment. She may need sterile or other conditions on her body. Likewise mail varnish is often not allowed in hospital. Strong smells, including nice ones, can easily be overpowering or cause nausea.

Non messy craft kits, something lovely and glowing, like a small colour changing light ( battery), Spirograph.

Small tube of lovely hand cream for the mother, your hands get so dry with all the washing.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 21/11/2020 09:55

Yes, Guess Who!

Confrontayshunme · 21/11/2020 09:58

Usborne sticker dolly dressing and paper dolls were very popular when my DD's friend was in hospital. Also, we sent some lovely bunting and paper flowers to put round her bed which she loved.

My son loves The Phoenix if you wanted to do a magazine / comic subscription. So funny and great drawings. www.thephoenixcomic.co.uk

WayTooSoon · 21/11/2020 12:40

A diary?
Maybe a little crosstitch kit?
Magazines/comics?
Books?
Puzzle books?
Some blank flipbooks that you have to draw your own animation on?
Fimo?
Christmas decoration kits?
Blank cards that she can make Christmas cards out of?

These ideas are SO inspiring

Her mum said she has a lot of notepads

They aren't really the same as letter writing kits, I might get her one anyway there are some lovely ones

She's also said pyjamas be amazing as she has to change a lot 💔💔 at night

Soap is normal soap.

What a lovely bunch of suggestions

Thanks all so much
Please keep them coming

I dont really know her well at all. I've never met her. She has cancer and is so so so unwell. She was in great health really over all and then had a little temperature and it turned out to be a very rare but nearly 99 % treatable. She's in the 1% and it's horrific. So the community has been doing what they can do try to find stem cell
Matches etc for various therapies for her.
She is my sons very good friends cousin. And it's horrendous. So I wanted to spread some joy. She has been in hospital for literally months and months. Only her mum with her due to lockdown and having siblings. You couldn't make it up.
I would like to send something for her mom
Too. Tbh. who has been sleeping on a chair thing at hospital for months on end with a child who is so so poorly.

My heart is crumbling for this family

The mum has been writing some really incredible blog posts which have been very interesting and informative re childhood cancer

But just heart breaking

Crushing what is going on for them

Anyone know any delightful pyjamas other then the usual candidates? I usual to go to m&s or next

I don't have friends with daughters that age so I am open to any suggestions xx

@PurpleFrames those soaps sound fun! But not sure if she can use them in bed 😞

I might get some for my son

If you are looking for nightwear then nighties/night dresses might be easier to get changed in and out of. DD used to have a lovely brushed cotton one from Monsoon when she was about that age.

NiceGerbil · 21/11/2020 13:40

I assume she's got some kind of games console/ something to watch films etc on

A new game/ subscription to something to watch or play?

cultkid · 21/11/2020 13:42

The mum said normal pyjama which is surprising as I thought nighties with no sleeves etc for all the lines she has
I've asked about if she has to pay for tv shows or films etc
She does have an iPad

Thanks so much

I'll come back and update what I got xx

How about a Lottie doll? They come in a box with all their accessories and are very colourful, jolly and wholesome. We have the one with the wellies, the cat lover one and the girl reporter. There's one that's actually a hospital patient.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/11/2020 13:44

My dd was in hospital very ill at a similar age - she loved new PJ's (her fave where My Little Pony) comics, nice smelling body lotion (baths where difficult as she was sick if she moved), cards and letters from friends and family - she also liked watching films

Phineyj · 21/11/2020 13:46

Atalune · 21/11/2020 13:47

I bought my Dd a lounge wear set from primark but I am sure h and m would be similar or Zara. She loves it as it feels quite grown up!

I don’t know what your budget is but white company has lovely pjs

NiceGerbil · 21/11/2020 13:48

Pajamas are better as you feel less exposed when they come to fiddle with stuff. Eg if they need to listen to your heart or do anything else on the chest you don't have to pull it all up. I wore knickers under my nightie all the time but it still feels exposing.

Or if she's in s wheelchair it means you don't flash anyone.

I was on a ward which helped as you made friends with the other children. As it was a specialist hosp a lot of them were in for a while as well so you had time. I don't know if it's still wards for children. We had about 14 beds on ours. If she's in her own room then that's a different thing.

Not really relevant but bringing back memories.

Trying to think of what else.

Atalune · 21/11/2020 13:49

What about a tray for her lap? Something that can be lifted on/off easily.

Sirzy · 21/11/2020 13:53

I second pyjama fairies especially if she is likely to need surgery at any time as they can be worn for surgery rather than hospital gowns.

Disney store do lovely big hooded blankets that fold into the hood. They are one of our hospital bag essentials.

What a lovely thing to do

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/11/2020 13:56

What about a box of postcards rather than notepaper? You could get a set like this and she could put some up as pictures as well as sending them.

They might seem a bit more manageable to write if she's weak. I'd go to a post office and ask what special stamps they have at the moment too, there might be some Rupert Bear ones which could be fun.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 21/11/2020 14:07

Perhaps a Disney+ subscription to watch on her Ipad? Does she like Looms?

IaltagDhubh · 21/11/2020 14:18

That pyjama fairies site looks brilliant. They would have been so useful when my DD was in hospital (cancer treatment). If you get normal pyjamas, go for ones that can button up at the front, and have a soft stretchy waistband. Also, avoid polyester if you can!

Some battery powered fairy lights and a set of rechargeable batteries might be good, so her mum can decorate around her bed. Maybe include a few packs of command hooks to stick them up with (I think I used blue tac and they kept falling down). The first things I did each time DD went in for treatment was to decorate her room or bed space and make it feel more cosy. The hospital lights can be so harsh, especially if she gets headaches or is sensitive to bright lights. Also might make it a bit easier for the nurses doing obs in the middle of the night.

Colourful and soft fleece blanket would add to the cosy feel. Make sure it’s easy to wash though.

Did you say she has siblings? Perhaps you could think about including something for them too. Brothers and sisters often get overlooked when one child is very ill.

These are both so cute

Good point about dignity v nighties @nicegerbil

Thanks again for the other suggestions

Steve the teddy is stunning but too expensive. I think they mint be a bit awkward if I sent something so extravagant, but I love it
