AIBU to wonder what this bug is!?

Last weekend I basically had really awful morning sickness. Threw up once, spent the weekend feeling really queasy and living on toast.

Initially I thought it was keto flu as I’ve been on that for a few weeks

But now my son has has the same thing for about five days. He’s only thrown up once or twice but has constant nausea. It’s completely debilitating and he’s been unable to go to school all week. I am bothered that he has basically missed school because if something I can’t identify and he’s definitely not making it up - I still don’t feel right myself.

I have heard about Gastrointestinal issues with children and COVID. (He is 12)

Would you get begging a test? Or am I overreacting?

And .... have you heard of anything similar doing the rounds?

Sorry to out this in AIBU but as we speak my stomach is cramping away and he’s sitting up drinking mint tea because of the discomfort.

I only know one person who has had a confirmed positive covid test. Nausea was their only symptom but she got a test as her husband was positive a few days earlier. I'd probably get a test tbh.

PoltergeistPirates · 21/11/2020 00:27

I was confused because there was no picture of an insect!

But yeah, I would suspect covid, and get tested. I hope you both feel better soon.

SheepandCow · 21/11/2020 00:32

Gastro symptoms are common in children.
Might be worth trying to get him tested.
I hope he feels better soon.

I was looking for an insect too! Hope you are all feeling better soon.

My child had this bug with a temperature this week. Their class had been sent home to isolate a few days earlier. The test came back negative.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/11/2020 00:42

Yes I would get a test.

Hawkmoth · 21/11/2020 00:43

Western Conifer Seed Bug... which is normally the answer at this time of year...

BawJaws · 21/11/2020 07:41

Thanks, I’ve booked a test

I hate having to put him through a test when he’s already feeling nauseous

Good luck and please report back with results. Hope you're feeling better soon and it's not covid!

Oneearringlost · 21/11/2020 07:53

But a year ago we would have accepted that it was a bug, it's that time of year.
Does COVID mean that all the other bugs that circulate at this time should be discounted? Even tough they all exist just as usual?
If he has no temp or loss of taste or any of the other COVID red flag symptoms, then I would not be putting him through this.
FWIW, I had exactly the same 10 days ago, had to get tested as was going into hospital for a procedure and was negative. and was tested o

SugarPlumFairyCakes · 21/11/2020 08:01

Sounds exactly the same as my DC (same age) had 2 weeks ago. Only sick a few times, but very nauseous feeling for the whole week.
Faffed and fretted around about getting a test.... But no other symptoms. We didn't go out at all and of course, no school for a week.
Was going to back to school last Monday, informed of positive test for a class mate so off for 2 weeks.

I wonder now too.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 21/11/2020 08:04

Yes go for a test. I know a couple of people who had a gastro variant of COVID and tested positive.

A lot of people don't get traditional 'Covid' symptoms but still test positive (my DH for one.) And I had 4 days of migraines at the start before any typical COVID symptoms appeared.

lurker101 · 21/11/2020 08:09

Sounds exactly how we were ill when we suspect we had COVID (pre mass testing days) and before gastric signs were known symptoms. I didn’t drink coffee for about 3 weeks after, I suspect looking back that my taste was altered

Norah8 · 21/11/2020 08:13

Ah this is interesting my 16 year old hasn't thrown up but is nauseaus.
I know locally V and D is rife.
which with all the supposed hand washing gel and masks in schools you'd thinknwouldnt be as prevalent as other years.

Gastrointestinal problems are classed as a symptoms for kids

I really don’t want to subject him to this given he’s already nauseous

If they weren’t classed as such obviously I wouldn’t do this

I understand OP
My DD has just texted me from uni saying she's had diarrhoea and vomiting all night.
She is due to get tested on Wed ( prior to coming home) ...Just as well it's Wed, it gives her the 48 hr isolation time for gastric illnesses...Hope she's not positive.
Good luck with yours...
