Is very underweight?

OP posts:
FlibbertyGiblets · 20/11/2020 21:44

Is this about your relative in hospital?

BlueyDragon · 20/11/2020 21:44

Yes. I was 5’6” and 6.5 stone. Now 5’6” and 9.5 stone. Healthy at both weights. Depends entirely on who you are and why you are the weight you are. See also rugby forwards who are phenomenally fit but technically obese.

What is it you are worried about, OP?

Jocasta2018 · 20/11/2020 21:45

I'm 5ft & now weigh just over 7 stone as I've been unwell. I personally feel uncomfortably bony so yes, I would say 5ft 4 & 7 stone is very underweight.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2020 21:47

I'm 5ft 4" I think that's underweight. I used to be very slim between 8 and 8 and a half stone.

ListeningQuietly · 20/11/2020 21:48

depends on their build

FatGirlShrinking · 20/11/2020 21:48

It's a BMI of 16.5 so yes she is underweight

CarlottaValdez · 20/11/2020 21:49

It’s very underweight by BMI yes.

nevernotstruggling · 20/11/2020 21:50

I'm 5'4. I was 7st 11 when I was 29 when dd1 was conceived. I'm tempted to post a pic but I won't. I looked on the skinny side of slim but not underweight. Hard to say how much difference 11 lbs would make though.

jessstan1 · 20/11/2020 21:59

@CaptainMyCaptain

Yes. I'm 5'5" and was skinny at 8.5 stone, still very slender at just over 9.
BackforGood · 20/11/2020 22:04

Why are you asking ?

elsaesmeralda · 20/11/2020 22:05

That's my height and was my weight when I was younger, had a baby and put on four stone during pregnancy!
I did look underweight looking back. But I was young and lifestyle was different

LouiseTrees · 20/11/2020 22:12

I was 5” 3 and 6.5 stone at one point in my teens, about 7 or 7 stone or in between in my early 20s. Yes I was underweight but not dangerously so

Titsywoo · 20/11/2020 22:17

Probably but not massively. My dd is 5ft2 and 8 stone. She is very slim (25 inch waist) but not skinny as in just skin and bone.

Jbck · 20/11/2020 22:17

My DD is same height, just over 7 stone and is slim but certainly not underweight.

Im an inch shorter and till my mid 20s had never been over 7.5 stone, I was slim but at a stone lighter at points I looked underweight.

TheDowagerDuchess · 20/11/2020 22:18

I was 5’6” and not much more in my teens. I suppose teens are often skinny though.

ktsc89 · 20/11/2020 22:30

I am 5ft4 and range between 7 and 7.5 stone (well not now I'm pregnant). It's just my build and I do think I'm quite light boned as know slimmer people that weigh more. My mums always been the same.

I've faced a lot of skinny shaming to be honest, so if someone looks healthy don't focus on their weight please. People wouldn't be able to say the same thing to an obese person, but asking a slimmer person about what clothes size they wear and how much they weigh is apparently ok.

The comments I got when I was suffering from HG and lost weight as a result actually were not fair and really upset me.

If this person looks unhealthy then yes it is classed as underweight according to BMI.

Sorry hit a nerve slightly! I'd just like more known about skinny shaming...

Sparklesocks · 20/11/2020 22:34

Can you provide more context, adult or child? Man or woman?

liveitwell · 20/11/2020 22:35

Depends on their build but yes, they are likely to be underweight.

I'm 5'4", small boned, at 8 stone I look ideal imo. At 8.5 - 9 stone I was starting to look a bit pudge in places.

My friend is a similar height but larger boned. She looks good at 9.5 stone.

Audreyseyebrows · 20/11/2020 22:38

Why are you asking @User2627?

CecilyP · 20/11/2020 22:41

Depends on their age. Is fine for a teenager, underweight for an adult.

TableFlowerss · 20/11/2020 22:48

Yes but it’s not an opinion from the public - it’s the NHS weight checker that says it’s underweight

supersplodge · 20/11/2020 22:49

Totally depends on your build. As a PP said - rugby players are muscly and therefore heavy, so their BMI says they are obese.

I am 5'3 (well 5'2 last time I was measured, now I'm over 50 we start shrinking.......Sad) but have never weighed more than 8 stone. Ideally I thin 6.5 would suit me, but I am very small boned. My wrists etc are very tiny. However, I am quite podgy and even at my thinnest have never been able to see my ribs or backbone. I'm currently about 7 stone 10 but definitely could lose some flab......

Inkpaperstars · 20/11/2020 22:49

It is underweight, I think the healthy weight range for even small build women of that height begins at 7'10 or 7'13 or something like that.

Facelikearustytractor · 20/11/2020 22:50

I used to weight that much and was 5"3. I was a size 6 and looking back I was far too thin. I wish I was half a stone lighter now though.

ReneeRol · 20/11/2020 22:50

It depends on build and body type. My sister is that height and the only time she ever looked a bit too skinny was below 6.5 stone.

Everybody's different. I'm the same height as a friend I play volleyball with, there's at least a four stone weight difference between us but we're both the right weight for our build and body.

There's no one size fits all.
