Had a decorator in last Friday to put some wallpaper up in my downstairs toilet. He did a diabolical job. Cutting isn't straight, pieces overlapped, gaps galore between pieces, pattern doesn't run on correctly and paper doesn't run flush to the door frame. The paper was Harlequin and £55 a roll so to say I am upset was an understatement. Decorator charged £60 for labour.

I messaged to say I was unhappy with it after properly looking over it at the weekend, he offered to basically come back and "bodge" it. I said no as I thought it would make it worse and when I'd spent that amount on wallpaper as well, I didn't want that doing. I asked for the £60 back and he said he'd pay it once he'd received some unpaid invoices.

It's now Thursday and I'm as of yet to receive the money. If I don't receive it soon, I'm tempted to take it to the small claims court as even if I did get my £60 back, I'm still £110 out of pocket for the wallpaper and will also need to pay to get it fixed. I don't have any experience of small claims court, would my claim likely to be successful in this instance and would you take it this far or simply pass it off as an expensive mistake if he were to send the £60 as promised?

I am completely distracted by the wallpaper. Didn't know people have wallpaper in the bathrooms either.

It's just a toilet and sink in there, I wouldn't if it had a bath/shower.

We hired someone to put tiles on the floor in our kitchen. It was a very good price but not a good job. Now we know why the price was too good.

I see now as I was wondering about the paper coming off at some point.

Fuck me i did a better job than that guy in my flat and i'm a fucking idiot!

😂😂😂😂😂

I learnt to wallpaper after watching 2 YouTube videos and did a waaaaaay better job than that!

Jesus! I got a better result the first time I wallpapered and I had a really complicated repeat.

Downstairs loos are the perfect spot to wall paper with extravagantly patterned wall paper.

They're usually small, not needing many rolls, and you go a bit mad and indulge yourself with the paper choice as it doesn't really impinge on the rest of the house.

I like your wallpaper OP but all the alarm bells rang at the £60. Proper tradesmen charge proper prices. End of.

It's a hard lesson because it's cost you the wallpaper as well. You could fill in the gaps with some paint and trim it but it would probably always bother you. You must be disappointed. Very sorry OP.

If you have the energy go after the small claims. It's a smallish amount but he still took it from you.

Shocking job.

Small claims is very straightforward.

Update: I waited until yesterday for the money to be sent as promised which it wasn't. I messaged the decorator again yesterday to receive a message back saying his Dad had passed away on Friday. I do believe this to be true, however I'm pretty sure he has now blocked me on Messenger as the message is only showing the grey tick which either means his phone is off (I know he has been on Facebook since then) or he has blocked me. Unsure of how to proceed now...
