To wear a visor on public transport?

IamEarthymama · 19/11/2020 19:00

Let me begin by saying that I don't plan to ask for exemption from wearing a mask though I do have asthma that has been exacerbated by having CV earlier in the year ( scan has revealed damage to lungs and bowels, which is nice)

I use public transport to get to work and to go shopping. I also sometimes get a taxi.

I am in my 60s, wear glasses and hearing aids (NHS) and cannot find a way of dealing with the mask, the glasses and the heating aids.
My glasses steam up, especially in this cold weather, so I struggle to present my travel card or talk to the driver. I realise that I lip read a lot more than I thought.
I have dropped my hearing aids before now whilst dealing with a mask and as they cost £65 each to replace I get really anxious.
I have taken to not wearing my aids until I get to work so that's one less thing to deal with.
Oh I forgot to mention that I seem to have NO cartilage in my ears, the elastic on the masks make them bend forward so I have to keep adjusting the damn mask.
I have tried disposable masks, bought every style of washable mask and yet I still dread getting on the bus.
I have suffered from anxiety in the past and I can feel it beginning again. I was tending towards not going out and have worked hard to overcome that. ( I have a friend who is acrophobic and I would like to avoid that.)

Does any one have any ideas for non-steamed up glasses and a mask that suits those of us with floppy ears?

At work I have a visor on clear spectacles which I wear over my glasses.
Would that, with a bandana over my mouth work? I really don't want to spread any germs or viruses.

I am aware that I sound a real peach, and am glad I have been with my wife for 22 years as I don't think I would be much of a catch on OLD!! 😉👀👓🦻🏻🌫🤦🏼‍♀️😷

I think as long as the visor covers your face completely so down to your chin you don’t really need a mask as well? Because you are already wearing a face covering- I think?

Lockheart · 19/11/2020 19:03

You can get masks that tie behind your head, which solves the ears issue.

I believe there is something you can put on your glasses to stop them steaming up. I can't remember what it is but I'm sure if you Google how to stop glasses steaming it will come up!

RichardMarxisinnocent · 19/11/2020 19:05

I would say the opposite to the PP and say that the bandana on its own would be fine, and it would probably be a bit more effective than a visor.

Nunyah · 19/11/2020 19:07

This was on twitter as a way to stop glasses fog from masks

To wear a visor on public transport?
Crappyfridays7 · 19/11/2020 19:08

A cotton snood on your face? Will cover your hearing aids safely too if needed (if you keep them in. It’s hard if you really struggle, my son is asthmatic and struggles for any length of time with a mask on.
I have a mask that has Velcro round the back to hold it on which is handy but I think if you’re wearing a visor you also need a mask so I’d do the snood only saves fighting with too many things whilst also getting stressed about it all. Good luck and hope you find a way that suits

FurForksSake · 19/11/2020 19:18

Visors we have been told in school are not an alternative to a face covering, however it is better than nothing and with a bandana would be fine. Stopping fogging up is having a tighter fitting mask, saving your ears you can buy ear savers where the elastic attaches to a piece of plastic or some fabric / knitting material with buttons on or tie on masks.

GlowingOrb · 19/11/2020 19:24

You need a mask that the straps wrap around your head not the ears. Also with a metal strip Inside to conform to your nose.

I sew so make ours from scratch, but You can actually mod many masks easily if the ear straps are run through a channel. You just want to install one long strip of elastic. Go up from the bottom on one side, down through the top on the other leaving a loop, then tie the tails to the right length.

I also got metal strips online that have adhesive so you can add them to masks. I use them to put the strips inside the layers, but they are designed to just tape to the mask and wear our after a couple of washes.

SexTrainGlue · 19/11/2020 19:46

Visors protect you from splatter to your face, but nothing else - your exhalations go straight round the edges (and vice versa). So don't bother - esp in Scotland where the advice for s specifically not to wear a visor without a mask or other covering.

So yes I think a snood or trying a scarf might be your best bet. But do keep exercise reinventing wth other masks - try ones you can ties round your head rather than anchor from ears. And definitely get one with a strip you can bend to fit snugly over the bridge of your nose, or tape a pipe cleaner

Mrsjayy · 19/11/2020 19:50

It doesn't have to be "a mask" just a face covering so your idea would absolutely work . I have seen lots of people out and about like this. There is a mask with a clear bit in it but I think that would steam up too.

Mrsjayy · 19/11/2020 19:51

My DD uses over head masks for work she hates over ear ones.

HermioneWeasley · 19/11/2020 19:52

Visors are completely pointless

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 19/11/2020 19:53

You have my respect op.. Last time I travelled by bus I wished I was wearing a safety harness!! Was genuinely travel sick for 3 days after!

IamEarthymama · 19/11/2020 23:15

I am not going to name check you all but please know you are stars shining bright 🌟🌟

I was seriously thinking that it was being precious and would be told to have a stiff upper lip and carry on
(Or stiff upper ear might be more use)

I have tried the washing up liquid on lenses as well as hand sanitiser. No joy.

I think my slight asthma contributes to the stressful feeling and steaming up , I know I can breathe perfectly well but it just doesn't feel as easy
I need to get in a routine with my puffers
.I have masks with and without wires, no difference

I think I might invest in some jazzy plasters, I am quite eccentric anyway so no one who knows me will care.

Again my thanks for your lungs suggestions and remarks

Many local knitters made things that go across the back of the head and the mask loops hook over the buttons on each end for hospital staff in the first wave> These were intended to stop sore ears when wearing masks all day but may help you too

Shoppingwithmother · 19/11/2020 23:33

I think for the steaming issue and the ears, disposable masks are the best, in my experience. The best way is to pull the mask as high up your face as you can without it interfering with your eyes and then mould the wire around your nose as tightly as possible.
That way your glasses can sit on top of the mask, which reduces steaming up.

Visors on their own, as people have said, are not effective. Just wear a face covering and you don’t need a visor for general use. A snood or bandana may work for your war issue, but may steam up your glasses.

Do not use washing up liquid or soap on your glasses. If they have any sort of coating, they will get damaged and you will end up needing new lenses as you won’t be able to see through them properly.

Lovely1a2b3c · 20/11/2020 01:04

That sounds difficult.

Visors are fairly useless by themselves. A surgical mask with tape on the nose would be the best plan but I found something (I'm not selling them!) called a 'Virustatic Shield' snood, which I would wear if I couldn't wear a mask.

foxyroxyyy · 20/11/2020 01:14

@Lockheart

You can get masks that tie behind your head, which solves the ears issue.

I believe there is something you can put on your glasses to stop them steaming up. I can't remember what it is but I'm sure if you Google how to stop glasses steaming it will come up!

The spell is impervious I think? Cant remember.
Changethetoner · 20/11/2020 01:15

i have cotton masks with long ties that go round the back of the head. no need to bother with ears.

Apileofballyhoo · 20/11/2020 01:18

My FIL put shaving foam on his glasses and it works for him. Not sure if it's also bad for the lenses as a PP said above.

alexdgr8 · 20/11/2020 01:26

OP, any chance of your working from home.
if i were you i would avoid public transport and places where people are gathered as much as possible. including offices/workplaces.
walk in open air as much as possible. keep away from other people. stay in touch by phone, internet etc.
good luck.

FloydWasACat · 20/11/2020 07:54

You need a Foggy Wipe
www.foggywipe.com

It has worked well for me so far with my glasses

ODFOx · 20/11/2020 08:03

Not helping for your specific question OP but are you washing your masks with the general wash and using fabric conditioner? I made this mistake and it became much harder to use them: my asthmatic dd suddenly started to struggle and I found that more was escaping round the mask so my glasses steamed up more.

Could that be a factor? Wash them without conditioner.

SoupDragon · 20/11/2020 08:08

I make my own masks and have found that they don't fog my glasses up if the small lip of fabric above the nose strip goes over the glasses. If my glasses are over the mask, they fog up.

An "ear saver" is the home made thing that basically converts a "round the ear" mask to "round the head". I find that my ears flop forward if the elastic is too tight am maybe try a mask with adjustable elastic (I've just bought some adjustable straps from Amazon to improve my masks)
