Dentist dilemma advice needed

When pregnant with DC2 I had numerous teeth issues and was diagnosed with tmj. Pain went away after DC2 was born 8 weeks ago however the past few weeks I've had bother with a broken lower 1st molar (has been broken for ages). Dentist had a look and felt a normal filling would suffice as opposed to RCT as the tooth was responsive when he tested it. Temporary filling was put in which caused no issues, however a week later I went back for a composite filling and had been experiencing a throbbing like pain since it was placed. Went back to dentist on Monday who tapped the offending tooth. Was a bit sore but nothing awful. He wasn't entirely sure what the issue was but said I could either have rct or extraction but his advice would be to try the rct. Made an appointment for the RCT on Friday. Was in quite a bit of pain Monday evening and Tues but largely reduced yesterday and gone today. My question is, should I still go for the RCT even though the pain has stopped? Have never had RCT before and very nervous. I'm wondering/hoping if the pain was merely from the composite filling settling as it was a deep hole that needed filled. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as need to make a decision today.

I sometimes get pain after deep fillings as they have to ‘knock’ the tooth around a bit and I think there can be a lot of swelling and tenderness. Maybe give it a few weeks to see if the pain
Comes back.

Thanks for the reply @BashfulClam. How long would you get pain for? Mines is normally after eating but can occur at random too

Call and explain to the receptionist ask her/ him to speak to the dentist and see what they think Ask for a call back from the dentist
It’s possible the nerve inside the tooth is dead or dying

Thanks for the reply @Heatherjayne1972. Hopefully the nerve is OK. Really worried about RCT. Not so much the procedure, rather that the pain will be worse afterwards. Have you had RC before?

I have yes. It was fine after. A bit sore but not terrible

I should say I work in a dental practice and generally there are many more RCT successes than failures

No leave it. Its normal for a couple weeks to get pain after a big filling. I always do. If it gets worse and worse or doesn't subside in a fortnight then go back but a week isn't long enough for mine to settle.

Thanks for the advice and expertise guys. Well the tooth has gotten sore again this evening. Unsure if it's due to the tmj or the filling but looks like something will have to be done. I'd rather get the tooth out but on the dentists advice I'll probably try the rct first. The only worry is that he said rct can weaken the tooth and cause it to be more difficult to extract later down the line if it needs out which makes me think it's better to get it out now whilst there's less chance of it being a tricky extraction. Sorry for the rambling but I really do get myself in such a tizz with dentistry.
