To ask family members to wash their hands?

AIBU to gently remind my family members (in my household) that they should wash their hands as soon as they get home before they touch anything, given that we are in a pandemic with rising local cases, or is that OTT?

I am made to feel like I am OTT about hygiene and have been called a germaphobe, cleanfreak, OCD. However, I thought washing hands when you got home was just a basic, normal thing that we are being advised to do that takes literally 20 seconds?

I have also seen members of my household do the following without washing their hands:

  • Handle raw meat
  • Prepare food
  • Use the loo
  • Pick up dog poo with a bag
  • Empty the bins
  • Change nappies

So as to not drip feed I am quite obsessive about washing my own hands but weirdly only when I am at home. However, I understand my family members don't have the same obsessive approach to hand washing and I accept that and in those contexts my anxiety starts to rise and I just have to walk away and mentally remind myself to wipe down the kitchen before I next cook. But in situations like the above surely it's not obsessive in those contexts but just basic hygiene?

YANBU.
It's just good practice during a pandemic to wash hands after going out.
Also not washing hands after handling poo bags = ew!

I think the majority of your list is exactly the time to wash hands - especially after raw food.

Also every member of my household washes their hands when coming home. You are right, it is what should be normal at the moment to prevent further infection.

"I am made to feel obsessive"...........their problem! Just agree cheerfully , remind them about the pandemic, and (slightly sarcastically) ask them to humour you.

MrsSpringfield · 19/11/2020 13:34

You are right.

But then I was painted as a devil for asking a family member to wash their hands before holding newborn baby, after the guest had travelled by Tube and bus! And had visible dirt on their fingers.
So perhaps I am not the right person to answer.

contrmary · 19/11/2020 13:41

You watch family members using the loo?

WTF I'd expect this pandemic or not!

RyvitaBrevis · 19/11/2020 13:41

YANBU! This is really basic hygiene. All of your scenarios require hand washing. Stick to your guns.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 19/11/2020 13:43

Ugh, no you're not being a "cleanfreak".

M0mmyneedswine · 19/11/2020 13:45

We all wash hands as soon as we get in and i will ask visitors to do the same when they are allowed

Marzipan12 · 19/11/2020 13:46

The rule in my house is wash hands and change clothes.

halcyondays · 19/11/2020 13:48

@contrmary

You watch family members using the loo?
Probably not. But if you’re nearby and you hear them flush the toilet and come out straight away you know they’ve not washed their hands.
halcyondays · 19/11/2020 13:49

And yanbu op. It’s basic hygiene.

dementedpixie · 19/11/2020 13:50

I do wash hands after everything on your list but don't wash hands when coming home from being out

BoyTree · 19/11/2020 13:54

We don't normally wash our hands when we come in unless we have been somewhere grimy, but at the moment that's a hard and fast rule too!

movingonup20 · 19/11/2020 13:57

They are all times when we normally wash hands, obviously not in the middle of the park (dog poo) but aside from that if they are not washing hands I would be concerned. That said I do not obsessively wash mine after shopping etc, I'm not worried about covid, but food poisoning etc more so!

ClickandForget · 19/11/2020 13:59

YANBU. We all wash our hands the moment we come in. It's now habitual so probs always will.

2bazookas · 19/11/2020 13:59

Yes, tell them . Everytime until they get the message.
