Please help - vertigo

Last night around 2 am I woke up with the most unimaginable possible vertigo. It was so strong I had to vomit but because of the vertigo I couldn't walk so had to crawl to my bathroom. It went like that for three hours. My husband called ER and they came and gave me some medicine and told me to call if the medicine doesn't work they will come and take me to hospital. Luckily, the medicine worked and I feel fine today, not 100 per cent fine, but fine.

Tomorrow I'll call my GP, but in the meantime I have been browsing the interned and read some horrible scenarios.

It would be great if somebody has experienced something like this can tell me what I can expect. I feel like I'm going mas.

I'm no stranger to horrible diagnosis but that was before I had kids. Now anything that can happen seems 10 time worse.

I suffer from migraines! But not regularly a few a year.

justasking111 · 18/11/2020 20:50

@MrsToothyBitch

I woke up with it about 2.5 years ago- inner ear infection, probably vestibular neuritis. It was horrendous but eventually subsided. I had about 3 days of being utterly helpless though! I think I ended up on stemetil. Took about 9/10 days to entirely go away.

Waking up with it was terrifying, I was frightened I'd be stuck like that.

I had this for six weeks one summer no pills worked, got OH to take me to dentist in case I had an infection he did not think so but gave me antibiotics. Hallelujah they did the trick. I had to have an mri but the consultant told me it was probably the tail end of a cold I had that had caused an infection.

Look up Menieres disease. I have it.

The intervals between attacks have lessened but it is bLOODY awful when it strikes.

Stemetill and Vailium help. There are uses for benzos occasionally, thank god I have an understanding GP.

dizzycatdance2 · 18/11/2020 21:20

I had this , a few attacks over 8 years or do.It was Bvpp,

I saw a specialist physio and a combination of the the epley (sp) manoeuvre from the physio and exercises I had to perform it's been (fingers crossed) fine for a couple of years.

Get someone to look at your eyes when you turn your head in bed or feel really vile. If you eyes are "flicking" it may well be Bvpp.

Thinkling · 18/11/2020 22:33

It really could by any number of things, but it could be impossible to tell from a single attack. It may also only be a one off thing!

I was originally diagnosed with recurring labyrinthitis 10ish years ago, but after multiple attacks have since been referred to the ENT and dizzy clinic. I've been told my most likely outcomes are Meniere's or Vestibular Migraines, but both require multiple attacks, and other symptoms for a diagnosis.

Please don't panic and assume it's going to be a recurring thing but definitely push for more help/specialist referrals if it does come back.

Oddsocks101 · 19/11/2020 03:33

For most people vertigo like that is a one off, due to an inner ear/nerve inflammation/infection and should gradually improve over the course of a few days/weeks. Try not to avoid movements as that can slow recovery. If vertigo is recurrent, short lasting (minutes) and only in certain positions (e.g lying down/turning in bed) it may be BPPV (v unpleasant but ‘benign’ and fixable), a good GP can test for this and treat it (or do an ENT referral). If vertigo is recurrent but longer episodes (hours/days) then might be something else (vestibular migraine/menieres/other) and I’d push for a referral so that ENT (or neurology given your medical history?) can do some checks. full disclosure - I am not a doctor, but do work in healthcare with dizzy patients :))

This happened to me a few years ago and it scared me to death. I felt so awful,I thought I was going to die but I also felt so awful that in the end I was worried I wasn’t! I just wanted it to be over. I’d had a few days of not feeling right and a couple of dizzy spells then one evening I was in the bath and it suddenly kicked in. I was petrified. I had to call my daughter to help me get out of the bath. I have a terrible phobia of being sick and went into a full on panic attack. I got so frightened that my arms and legs were paralysed. I managed to go to sleep and felt a bit better the next day but still dizzy. A few days later it happened to me again and it was just as scary. I managed to try and calm down a bit and took some anti nausea pills. Just as it was easing I lost my vision because of a migraine, zig zags, etc. I called the doctor who said it was labyrinthitis. Thankfully it hasn’t happened since but if I ever feel light headed or a bit dizzy it makes me anxious as I’m terrified of it happening again.
I really hope you feel better soon. It really is bloody horrible Flowers

FangsForTheMemory · 19/11/2020 05:51

Hugs, OP. I’m in remission for Meniere’s and the vertigo was absolute misery. It lasted for 18 months on and off, nearly 20 years ago now. Did you get tinnitus too? Did your vision go before you started to get dizzy?

Bramblespoint · 19/11/2020 09:18

How are you feeling now OP?

I've also had bppv with multiple attacks over the years. @BeingAMumIsHardWorm really interesting to hear you've also had multiple attacks as my GP told me it should stop happening and was kind of worry me that it wasn't!

BeingAMumIsHardWorm · 19/11/2020 09:33

@Bramblespoint that's interesting. I was told that once you have an attack you would be prone to it on and off I also have a friend who has bvpp and she has attacks too.

thereisonlyoneofme · 19/11/2020 09:52

I have been suffering from this on and off for 3 weeks. Ive put it down in my case to the chemo Im having destroying cells etc. Hope its not a permanent condition in my case as I live alone and need to be able to get out and drive !

RhodaDendron · 19/11/2020 10:30

How are you feeling op? It sounds a lot like labyrinthitis which I’ve had a few times. Unutterably awful, I wish you well.

AcornAutumn · 21/11/2020 00:13

@BeingAMumIsHardWorm

It sounds like BVPP (google it). It is to do with some loose ear crystals. I have had this on and off for about ten years. The first time was the worst and it has gradually subsided as time has gone on. I still get the odd attack but nowhere near as bad as the first.
I think I have this - for two weeks now turning over in bed is a problem and today I had to drop to the floor while doing a side stretch because I was that dizzy. My knee is going to feel it tomorrow!

Did it go away on its own? Reading suggests it might. If it doesn’t change over the weekend it’s doc for me.

OP I hope you have recovered Flowers
