To wonder why women in daily mail features always wear dresses?

Every time I see a feature in the daily mail, I notice the women are always wearing dresses, looking as though they are going to tea with the vicar. Anyone any idea why this is? I’m sure that the women don’t always dress like this in real life, so does the daily mail give them dresses to look like stepford wives?

I did a similar thing in another paper years ago it’s hair make up studio the works. They decide on the look they are after.

MrsMattMurdock · 17/11/2020 10:55

And they do that weird pose where their shoulders are facing the camera but their hips are turned to the side, presumably to make them look slimmer. Appalling in this day and age.

SerendipityJane · 17/11/2020 10:56

The Daily Mail is a naice middle class newspaper and is pushing that image. It's squarely aimed at women either don't work because hubby is minted and they get to do the Daily Mail wet dream of being a middle class brood mare, or they don't need to work and so are able to have supah careers that are obviously the preserve of the "right" people.

The rest of you should be aspiring to that from your zero hours contracts serving your betters.

Mind you, I've only been reading it 50 years, so this could be an aberration. Checks memory banks. No this is the paper that supported Hitler. Nothings changed.

(My Mum would have been 83 today - RIP Mum. Carrying on the work ...)

When you do a shoot like that they provide the clothes, make you up, provide the shoes and insist that you wear sheer tights. They also force you to do all sorts of awful poses. It's not a good time.

Do they still all wear plastic “nude courts” too? Must have had quite a supply when Kate favoured them.
YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 17/11/2020 11:01

Oh yes and the nude courts and sheer American Tan tights. 🤣

Wnikat · 17/11/2020 11:05

Why is it always a wrap dress??

PerfidiousAlbion · 17/11/2020 11:05

Yes, its to present their idealised version of womanhood to their, largely, middle-aged/older female, middle class readership.

It’s utterly bizarre and in no way reflects modern women of that age. I dont know anybody who dresses like that.

Watercoloursky · 17/11/2020 11:09

@thatonehasalittlecar

The Daily Mail will not allow women in their photos to wear trousers. If they send a photographer, they ask you to change, if you won’t, they won’t take the photo. Crazy isn’t it?

[I know this through my work, btw]

I used to work in news journalism (not for the Mail!) and can also attest that, at least at the time, they didn't let you describe a woman as 'Ms' - it had to be Miss or Mrs, even if the interviewee preferred Ms. Super-outdated.
CorianderLord · 17/11/2020 11:12

We are definitely allowed to wear trousers (even jeans), flats and eat wherever we want now. At least at the two papers I've worked at.

redkenso · 17/11/2020 11:12

Because women are supposed to be either tarty or demure depending on whether the Daily Mail agenda is to make you judge or sympathise.
They probably save the scruffy t-shirts and frumpy trousers for the benefit bashing threads.

GoudaGirl · 17/11/2020 11:20

The z list celebrities on the website version must have 'pert derrieres' too. Its like lingo bingo.

nevermorelenore · 17/11/2020 11:20

@Wnikat

Why is it always a wrap dress??
Presumably because it shows a tasteful amount of cleavage. And their stylist hit their head and thinks its 2004.

Although occasionally, if they have a slim lady in their line up, they'll dress her in a Kate Middleton special -- a long sleeve midi dress with a button-up top.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 17/11/2020 11:21

A friend of mine was in one of those and she wore trousers

She looked fabulous 😀

nosswith · 17/11/2020 11:26

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer sorry to hear this, hope she has recovered from the shame of being in The Paper that Supported the Blackshirts.

Fouroclockonamarblemorning · 17/11/2020 11:39

They clearly have a job lot of horrible clingy wrap dresses and nude shoes😫

Noodles4Me · 17/11/2020 12:01

Don't forget the "THIS is what 50 looks like" header too

Cattenberg · 17/11/2020 12:02

The Daily Mail is a naice middle class newspaper

It really, really isn’t. It’s rabble-rousing rubbish.

Hoowhoowho · 17/11/2020 12:04

I was doorstepped by the Daily Mail once and they took a photo. It never got printed maybe because I was wearing jeans.....

PicsInRed · 17/11/2020 12:06

Horrible dresses too. So unflattering. And the women always seem to be perched awkwardly on the arm rest of a sofa next to a comfortably sitting husband. Why? It's bizarre. 😂

I read the Mail for the comedy value...it's a top notch parody of the middle classes.

SerendipityJane · 17/11/2020 12:09

shhhhhhhhh

It is. But the people who buy it think they are naice and middle class. And long may that continue. We need to know where these people are so we know what they're up to.

EggBobbin · 17/11/2020 12:09

Isn’t the feature today about SAHM’s getting paid a ‘mummy salary’ Hmm which is a really odd way to phrase ‘shared household finances’ if you ask me...

Remember their agenda ...
Lelophants · 17/11/2020 12:11

Surely it's for the demographic that read the DM.

Older, Conservative sexist pigs

EggBobbin · 17/11/2020 12:12

The article was forwarded to me by an older relative as I’m about to take maternity leave. I earn more than DH.
