to not want to work in a supermarket ..

Yes, it is very snobby of me I know, and especially right now it’s a “needs must” situation when so
many are being made redundant and don’t have much choice. The only jobs where I am right now seem to be in a supermarket or cleaning houses or offices (I’m a rubbish cleaner).

It may be petty, but I don’t want it on my CV amongst the other jobs I’ve had (aviation/travel working with major players of the industry) to then have “Asda” or equivalent as my most recent job. I just feel I have so much more to offer but nobody in my industry of choice is hiring right now (understandably).

AIBU to think this will go against me for future job opportunities? Or will future potential employees understand this is a blip of “COVID times” and not see it as a negative? Am I just being stupid?

MummyofT · 18/11/2020 18:08

Good luck even getting any job with that attitude tbf. Leave it off if you’re ashamed or keep it on so you don’t seem like the kind of snob who is too good to work in the most essential industry right now...

PrincessNutNut · 18/11/2020 18:11

For the love of.... SHE'S TAKING THE JOB AND PUTTING IT ON HER CV!

Dear God, are we surrounded by Sun readers?

Jeeperscreepers69 · 18/11/2020 18:25

With that attitude i dont think retail is for you. Retail workers are honest hardworking down to earth people. You would be crucified. Snobbery is a ugly trait.

browneyes77 · 18/11/2020 18:26

OP, I’ve worked in Recruitment for over 20 years. A decent employer, will absolutely
A) understand that the situation with Covid, put people in situations they wouldn’t normally have been in
and
B) See that you’ve shown flexibility and adaptability to the situation thrown at you. Adaptability goes a looong way with employers.

I can see you’ve taken the role, so that’s great because at least you’re going to give it a try. You might surprise yourself and find it wasn’t as scary as you anticipated! Plus with your experience in the aviation industry I’m sure you’re more than used to dealing with customers, so you’ve already got one of the most important skills under your belt Smile

bigbeautwoman · 18/11/2020 18:29

Sounds like a bit of snobbery to me! I think future employers would see it as a positive in that you are adaptable. Consider yourself lucky I can’t even get an interview in retail or cleaning as no experience having only worked in an administrative setting all my working live.

Iamthewombat · 18/11/2020 18:42

Poor bloody OP. As if the invective on here wasn’t enough. I think that the thread should be taken down in case some spiteful person tries to identify her.

Who knew that there was so much pent up bile in people who can’t bear to see a woman doing well in her career, working at a senior level and having worked in several countries? Particularly amongst other women. Shame on you.

winkywonky · 18/11/2020 18:45

Put it on your CV! It shows you are willing to do what it takes to support yourself and your family. This shows versatility in your skillset, determination and an excellent work ethic. All great qualities. Never believe you are above a job or other people, COVID should have shown you that if anything.

Iamthewombat · 18/11/2020 18:46

With that attitude i dont think retail is for you. Retail workers are honest hardworking down to earth people. You would be crucified. Snobbery is a ugly trait.

WOULD BE crucified? I think that is already happening. Does it make you feel better, knocking somebody else down?

Smileyk · 18/11/2020 18:51

As an employer I'd rather see a supermarket job listed on a cv than a big gap because you didn't want a supermarket job on your cv so would rather doss around doing nothing. You could be out there learning new skills!

PrincessNutNut · 18/11/2020 18:54

Does anyone really believe that someone who had a highly successful career in aviation, working around the world, would actually be a "dosser" because they had a career break in a pandemic that savaged their industry and cost them their job? I mean, if you saw this person's CV and after 20 odd years and an impressive track record it said "redundancy due to Covid-19", you would honestly think "must be a skiver and a terrible person"?

Skysblue · 18/11/2020 18:58

I don’t think you’re being snobby OP. You worked hard for one career, it got taken away through v v bad luck, and now you’re sad to have been pushed into a job you didn’t choose. Hopefully you will enjoy it and get promoted rapidly and find it a great decision!

Just popped in to wish you well.

Iamthewombat · 18/11/2020 19:00

I just spotted this, upthread, from somebody who studied geology and works in a supermarket. This person is OUTRAGED by the OP.

Personally, I think you're punching abit high thinking your travel job in aviation is better... I wouldn't say it was that good

Eh? She has worked at a senior level in what is, by any objective measure, a prestige industry. She has lived in three countries whilst building her career.

Nevertheless, you want to put her firmly in her place, don’t you? She can’t be that good. The OP’s prestigious career isn’t all that, and she should be GLAD to stack shelves. In fact, in aspiring to do so, she is ‘punching’. Christ. What a world.

Susan1961 · 18/11/2020 19:02

It saddens me to think that retail & social care is, or was an undervalued job. Both jobs require good social skills; including patience and respect, practicality & sensitivity often with the basic minimum wage as a reward.

allhappeningatonce · 18/11/2020 19:05

You'll be fine, supermarket work can be fun if you're sociable & you'll work with lots of different people you probably wouldn't normally get a chance to meet. All sorts end up working there, more so at the moment I'm sure! Just keep one eye in your industry at all times.

Caplin · 18/11/2020 19:05

OP, I’m in a senior role with Asda, started in May. It is a good job, one of the few that pays a bonus and for front line store colleagues we will be paying 100% bonus this year to recognise all the incredible work they have done.

I have worked a lot of places and I have interviewed a lot of people over the years. In 2020 of all years, and the fact you work in travel, I would have no issue with seeing a supermarket on a CV. I would be blown away that someone was so determined and willing to do anything it took.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 18/11/2020 19:09

Tbh, I'd look much more kindly at someone whose CV had a 6-month stint in ASDA post redundancy, than I would at someone who spent 6 months not doing much at all.

Any decent employer worth their salt will recognise we are in unprecedented times and give you credit for staying economically active. And if they don't, they are probably a total arse who really wouldn't be worth working for anyway....

bigbeautwoman · 18/11/2020 19:11

@VettiyaIruken

My dad always used to say that no honest work was beneath anyone.

It is true. Nobody is too good to earn a living by taking whatever job they can. You need to change your attitude imo

definitely an attitude problem
SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 18/11/2020 19:41

It wouldn't go against you as you think as it shows you are willing to do anything in these tough times and that you are a grafter!

But the real question is, will you?

PrincessNutNut · 18/11/2020 19:43

SHE HAS ACCEPTED THE JOB AND WILL PUT IT ON HER CV!

I swear this thread is the new "cancel the cheque"!

VestaTilley · 18/11/2020 19:44

It’ll be fine- take the Asda job and keep applying for roles in your field. My Nana worked on the Asda checkouts; she loved it, it was sociable and meant she contributed financially.

Working always looks better to employers- it shows you’re a grafter.

You poor thing. You might find you enjoy it.

Iamthewombat · 18/11/2020 20:12

My Nana worked on the Asda checkouts; she loved it, it was sociable and meant she contributed financially.

So the OP’s career aspiration should be to be like your grandmother? Did your grandmother do a senior role in the travel industry before she worked on the tills at Asda?

Working always looks better to employers- it shows you’re a grafter.

Not this again. No, for senior roles - which is where the OP is at - it adds precisely nothing if the role isn’t in the field in which the person has built their career.

People keep parroting the same nonsense about ‘showing that you are willing to do anything’. Do you genuinely think that people are recruited to senior roles because they are ‘willing to do anything’? Like what? Empty the bins? Make tea?

The same goes for ‘showing that you are a grafter’: at the OP’s level it is assumed that you bring specific skills and knowledge and that you get the job done. Do you think that in face to face interviews for senior roles, candidates say “I work really hard!”? Spoiler: no.

lollylimejuice · 18/11/2020 20:15

@Lola528 you should be very proud of yourself. Regardless of what the future holds, you will be proving your strength of character taking a job you don't want and which might be queried in the future. If I saw your future CV I would employ you. It shows you'll turn your hand to whatever is necessary. Go for it.
