I think I might be depressed

I don't know if I'm reading too much into things... but I just feel horrible. I have this constant, low level anxiety, and it's really getting me down. I can't stop worrying about things that might happen and every day I just wake up and think, "Oh God...!"

I just feel so sad. I used to enjoy life so much and now it's as if I'm seeing the world in shades of grey instead of in colour. I end up in tears over something stupid every day.

I'm just so worried that I've fallen into depression, or that this is a manifestation of some other mental health condition, and that I'll never get back to normal again.

Good luck op, I found once I got the words out (to the gp) the relief was amazing... A few tears too.

It's not like it is coming out of nowhere - I can defo pinpoint the things that are making me feel like this. But I feel like I can't open up to anyone around me.

Do you want to get counselling for this? It may be useful as well as medication to work through some stuff.

You can get counselling online just make sure they have some accreditation first.

Or starts threads on MN to talk things through. Perhaps not on AIBU though!

Make sure everyday has a good "framework". I don't know your circumstances but if you are not already doing so keep regular sleep/wake hours, get showered and dressed every day, go for a walk. Have a little something to look forward to every day. New make-up, a bubble bath, your favourite TV programme etc.

Life is extra-tough right now. I hope things get better for you. Thanks

@Jourdain11

I'm already sleeping really badly, so at least I'm not worrying too much about meds affecting sleep. They can't possibly make it worse!
Bad sleep brings you down too. Here I am at 3am 😖

Thanks again for the replies and sorry that I forgot to come back to this!

The GP was really understanding and kind and I didn't feel like too much of an idiot explaining, even though I started crying!

She prescribed sertraline and I've got to say, I'm not liking it at all so far - it is messing up my sleep (even more) and making me feel really jittery. But she did say that the SE are normal and short-lived, so I will stick with it!

She's also referred me to IAPTS, but I think the waiting list will be long...!

Hi. I take the same medication as you and the side effects lasted a couple of weeks for me. I would get hot and feel nauseous. They have helped me and I was wary of taking them, I've been on them over a year and now I've reduced my dose to very little so hopefully be off them completely in the future. Hope you're ok.

Jourdain11 · 23/11/2020 07:10

Ah, I was wondering if that was why I kept feeling sick! Do you mind if I ask, how long was it before you felt a positive effect?

The symptoms you're having do sound like depression.
Especially the waking up part when you think "another day not this again"
I hope you feel better soon.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/11/2020 07:43

I saw your update they are really good.
You'll feel iffy sick bloated stomach dehydration and headache all mild enough for 4 weeks once it passes you'll settle.
They've changed my life.

showmethegin · 23/11/2020 10:23

Hi OP. Well done to you for going to the GP, that's a really positive step! My partner is on Sertraline and he felt like crap at the start but they've changed his life. He has suffered with severe anxiety for years and said he feels like he can live again. The improvement has been monumental to be honest. He has been on them a while but is going to be coming off gradually soon.

I also took Citalopram a couple of years ago. I was feeling very low and had anxiety which I believe stemmed from a horrible experience at work. They worked wonderfully for me and really helped me lift my head above water. I was probably only on them for 6/9months and had no side effects when I came off.

Jourdain11 · 23/11/2020 13:16

I hope they are going to work well for me too! I actually feel a little less down now, obviously not because of the meds (which won't have kicked in yet) but even just taking positive steps to seek help and being taken seriously by the GP makes me feel a little less dark and hopeless.

So, thank you all, for your encouragement!

I started to feel the tablets we're working after about 4 weeks, I had six weeks off work too which helped.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/11/2020 14:48

Good for you.
They worked on me fairly quick the side effects aren't great but hang in there they do pass by next month you'll settle.
