What would you do? Neighbour's barking dog.

For over three years my neighbour's dog has been slowly and surely leading me to a nervous breakdown. They often leave it outside alone while they go back inside and shut the back door. This could be 5 minutes or 4 hours. The dog barks and howls until it is eventually let inside. There is no pattern to it, and because I'm expecting the noise all the time, I can't relax or work in my own home. I can't open my windows due to the noise in the morning and evening.

About a year ago, I visited them a few times over a few weeks to politely explain the situation and ask if the could do something. The man was reasonable, but his wife yelled I was crazy, slamming the door in my face. I left it, as I didn't want the confrontation and was scared of what they would do if I pursued it.

The problem is now I work from home every day and I have started to get regular migraines and have been in hospital for chest pains and stress related issues (due to a combination of things in my life). The barking is just not something I can live with anymore, but I feel utterly powerless. Complaining to the council is off the cards, as I don't own the house and it wouldn't be fair to create issues if they choose to sell in the future.

What would you do? Do you think I am being unreasonable? I'm beginning to think I am crazy.

I agree don’t bother with rspca . I complained about a dog tied up in sub zero conditions and they said as long as it had water and shelter they would do nothing .

I wouldn't care if it effects them when they sell. You are in bits with this so something has to be done. Contact the council and tell them it's been three years and its animal cruelty. It might resolve with a letter. If not I would move.

You have a choice,

  1. report to the council as an environmental issue ( and you should be able to do this without giving your name, or if they do insist on a name they should not advise your neighbours who is complaining)
  2. Knock on your neighbours door each and every time
3 move
TibetanTerrier · 16/11/2020 22:33

@Fluffybutter
What? The dog is shut in the owners garden .. you’d go and take it out of there into your own home?
That’s fucking nuts to put it bluntly . Op don’t do that for Christ sake

Yep, that's what I'd do. I love dogs and it would upset me to hear a dog in such distress and I'd have to do something about it. So yes, I'd invite it into my home because it would probably solve the problem. Not nuts at all. The dog would be happy, I would be happy, and my dogs would be happy to have another playmate. If the neighbours weren't happy I'd point out that the other solution would be for me to report them to the council.

Dongdingdong · 16/11/2020 22:46

I'd look into poisoning the dog (joking!)

Hmm
Dongdingdong · 16/11/2020 22:47

Sorry to hear you’re going through this though OP. Contact the council tomorrow.

Dongdingdong · 16/11/2020 22:51

Oh, and next time you move, make sure your neighbours are Muslim!

Contact police?

BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 16/11/2020 23:16

Trust me, as someone who has been in this position, the only way forward it to report it to the council. It's shit and horrible being that neighbour who complains but I'm pretty sure you'd be doing everyone a favour - you won't be the only person being affected by this.
You need to either get this reported ASAP, or move. I own my house so couldn't just up and leave unfortunately, so at least you have that option. I reported to the council and over time the problem eased up no end; I rarely hear the dog now.

Frestba · 17/11/2020 00:17

Have a look at your local council website. There will be information there. We lived next door to a very annoying white fluff ball who snapped and snarled whenever we went into our garden. Fortunately they moved.

Everley · 17/11/2020 01:40

I am in the exact same position as you. A nearby dog does the exact same thing and just barks non stop when it is outside. It’s a neighbouring street, our gardens/car parking backs on to their garden but I can still hear the dog inside with doors and windows shut. I’ve never heard such a loud persistent dog. Much worse in warmer weather as it seems to be constantly outside. It really broke me this year as was at home more and in the garden a lot more than usual. I have a chronic illness which makes it hard for me to constantly listen to the barking and howling as it can trigger various symptoms. I kept a log for 3 weeks and reported it to the council. I did worry that the owners would possibly think it was their direct neighbours that had reported them but by this point I had had enough. I feel sorry for the dog, it sounds so hoarse and croaky when it barks. Please think about contacting your council.

Hollyhobbi · 17/11/2020 02:28

The thing that I don't understand about barking yappy howling dog owners is why doesn't it drive them mad? Are they always deaf or something? Do they wear earplugs all the time? I was renting a place onetime when I was a student nurse on night duty. And we did 7 nights in a row so a full week of them. How I didn't kill the barking little fecker of a dog in the next door neighbours garden, I'll never know. There is nothing worse when you are trying to sleep in the daytime except maybe a landlord who decided to renovate his house before the notice period was up!!

imsofuckingtired · 17/11/2020 02:38

I can't believe you're mental health is suffering so much but you wouldn't call the council. That is madness.

Anordinarymum · 17/11/2020 02:43

I have dogs. I don't allow them to bark in the garden. If they do, I bring them straight in. I take mine out for a walk so they only go in the garden for a wee, but my next door (by garden - different street) neighbours have a dog that gets put out all of the time and barks to be let in and they also leave it for a long time which drives us nuts.

We try to ignore it. I would like to give them a piece of my mind because I think it is mean to the dog, but it's also ignorant to people living in the vicinity.

Idunnoyou · 17/11/2020 03:14

Wow I'm so sorry for you. Please don't feel like you shouldn't report this why should your health/life be bad for someone else's actions which are easy to fix

Out of interest what would the council do anyway?? Can they force rehoming?

pilates · 17/11/2020 06:40

People mentioning poisoning dogs is not funny

They’ll send a letter warning them to address the situation or it will be taken to court as noise nuisance and they could be fined and have the dog taken away .

Exactly! It’s absolutely mental that they really don’t get annoyed by it at all even though it reverberates around the street. I’ve asked myself that same question numerous times .

Yes I say that about next door neighbours. When I get to the stage where I want to scream, even with my doors and windows shut, I can't believe it doesn't bother them.

Earlier in the year a neighbour across the road got burgled. I said to next door neighbour that obviously my dogs had not heard anything as they did not bark (they only bark if someone is around). If they bark I look to see who or what they are barking at.

She giggled like a child and replied that if she looked every time her dog barked she would be looking out all day! She seemed to think it was hilarious
