IVF appointment

Hello, im just looking for a bit of advice ( and maybe a hand hold....)

Im back to my Clinic next Monday to start my planning for IVF and i have to have my BMI below 30 or else it will be postponed. I still have 1lb to lose and i know i can get that gone by next Monday. I have been watching my calories and exercising for the last few months and i lose about an average 1lb a week so im not worried about that. I may even lose more as i have upped my exercise (and still keeping a decent calorie deficit )

The thing is, my appointment is at 1pm and my weight always fluctates during the day. Not by much but enough for the clinic to postpone. Do you think it would be cheeky to phone and ask for an earlier appointment ? cause i always way less in the morning before i have eaten anything.

Or the other plan would be not to eat anything until my appointment! I feel the clinic have been so good to me and i dont want them to think im chancing my arm asking to get my appointment changed again.

Could it hurt to ask?

TIA!

You're being ridiculous. If your BMI is that marginal then it would be inappropriate for them to allow you to proceed. Go to the appointment at the given time, eat normally, and let them make a clinical judgment on whether to allow your treatment to proceed.

I hope you get the outcome you want, but please remember the weight loss needs to be maintained, for your health and that of your baby.

Ring and say you have a work meeting and if they can move it earlier and if not that's fine. no harm in asking. I am assuming this is NHS as the BMI limit is quite low.

Also remember that they weigh you fully dressed

Haenow · 16/11/2020 12:23

Wear light clothes and don’t get weighed in shoes. Don’t drink lots before you go.

@Hayeahnobut thanks for the reply...so quick!

ridicolous? nah i dont think so! im fully aware of the criteria involved and fully support the clinics decision. Even if my BMI was over, they would only postpone it until i was ready.

But thanks for coming back to me! Wink

@Bells3032 @Haenow

thanks to you both! i think im just going to phone and chance it. its not like im cancelling it, just seeing if i can change it!

If you want, OP, then try for 'reasons' but I vaguely recall the weight criteria arise from outcome statistics so carry on with a healthy diet and exercise to maximise the chances of a successful outcome.

Good luck.

justhereforthecraic · 16/11/2020 12:40

@Zilla1 thank you :)

yeah the plan is to carry on what im doing. im just so used to my body at the moment, i know my weight can fluctate during the day, which is very normal!

there is a reason for the BMI cut off as it affects success rates. Can you postpone the appointment by a short while to make sure you are really below the cut off and not just by skipping breakfast?

Zilla1 · 16/11/2020 12:43

You know your body best, OP, all I was trying to say was to avoid crash diets which may affect your success pre and post-implantation.

justhereforthecraic · 16/11/2020 12:44

Im not trying to 'get around' the criteria... and im not actually starting any medical stuff next week...its just an appointment to sign some forms, get a few tests/scans done. Its the next step to our IVF start date which wont be until march/April next year. and by then, i will definitely be way under the BMI criteria,

justhereforthecraic · 16/11/2020 12:46

@Zilla1 no, i apprecaiate that and hope i didnt sound a bit cheeky in my reply!

ive given up on the crash diets (SW, Low carb...etc) and adopted a much better eating/exercise regime which has helped me . The weightloss has been a bit slower but it stays off and its easy maintained :) Ive lost 4 stone in total to help with my IVF journey :)

You didn't sound cheeky, OP, I've seen it's an arduous and emotive journey. It sounds like you're on course. Hope it goes well at the assessment.

I literally made an account to post. Read this... www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2019/06/18/magazine/fertility-weight-obesity-ivf.amp.html you're not being unreasonable, they are.

justhereforthecraic · 17/11/2020 10:26

@Twinsforthewin oh thats an interesting read and i 100% agree with it. BMI is not the most efficient way of measuring someone's health. Unfortunately, I have to go with the criteria given to me.

There are plenty of healthy pregnancies with women who are overweight but i know the clinic are just given me every opportunity to have a succesful outcome so i will do what im told Wink
