Just been to pick up DS from nursery. His key worker wasn't v. well. She can't take any more days off this year (she's had two for illness) because she'll get a written warning. Whaaaat? This can't be right or legal surely? She's a full time employee working 35+ hours per week. Or am I being naive?

A friend's husband works for Royal Mail. After 3 episodes of being off sick they get a written warning. If they get a 4th, they can be fired. . There are also all sorts of regulations about the fact that if you take a sick day following a day off, you are interviewed and given a warning.

I don't know if this is just a local rule, or for the royal mail as a whole.

Where I work, as far as I know, the nursery workers don't get sick pay.

i did think this thread would be about royal mail

Dh works in a call centre and this is the rule there too. He's worked in several over the years and they're all the same.

She needs to check her contract re. the exact wording of what she can and can't do. If she has sick notes from a GP then she should be completely covered.

We have the issue re. sickness immediately before/after a holiday/day off. Those sicknesses must be covered by a doctor's note.

We also have a policy re sickness. After xxx number of days (10 pro rata I think) or any 6 periods of absense (regardless of how long)then you are "invited" to a meeting between yourself, HR and the education manager to discuss the issues. I will have to go to two of these this year as I have just had 6 weeks off following minor surgery, and due to have the same op/treatment at the end fof the year too. However it is all covered by doctor's notes.

However last year my accrued sickness (related to this more recent surgery) was not all covered by doctor's notes. However I just explained htings int he meeting and actually found them ok. Helped as I had done my homework before the meeting and had loads of documentation relating to my condition for them to preuse, inc the symptoms I suffered.
