To feel a bit of nostalgia for “lockdown version 1”

This is lighthearted and I’m not making light of the shitty situation we all find ourselves in.
However this lockdown seems to be missing some of the elements that made the first one bearable

Tiger King, great memes, queuing outside Sainsbury’s etc.

This feels instead like and endless slog - so Aibu to ask say the sequel is not as good as the original?

Personally, for me, this lockdown is easier. This lockdown hasn’t changed my day to day life that much. Can’t meet more than one friend indoors, and can’t do some of our normal weekend activities - like soft play or swimming or farm parks.

But the nurseries and schools are open, we can exercise as much as we like in the outdoors - none of this ‘no sitting on park benches, no driving for exercise’ bollocks, outdoor attractions like play areas and NT parks are open, there hasn’t been stockpiling (at least in my area), you can meet up with one other person outside which is wonderful, and there’s so much more knowledge about the virus which seems to mean less fear. And Strictly’s on ☺️

StanfordPines · 15/11/2020 13:33

There was much more of a ‘pulling together’ feel in the first one. Special tv scheduling and checking on neighbours during the clapping. I was in school one day a week for key worker children but working from home the rest of the time.

This just feels like normal times except I can’t get a haircut or a coffee.

Anjo2011 · 15/11/2020 13:34

I haven’t painted or cleared any wardrobes this time round and haven’t put on any weight so far (unlike round one) so I’m not pining for that. By I do miss the glorious weather and being in the garden for hours on end. This time I feel like we are not as united as we were in round one, many people have much more worry this time.

zigaziga · 15/11/2020 13:35

And Strictly’s on this is also a point. Anton as a judge yesterday made the week a bit brighter!

Buddytheelf85 · 15/11/2020 13:36

I would have loved lockdown one if I hadn't had children. Reading, Netflix, gaming, getting to grips with WFH.

Same - I think about the Netflix possibilities all the time Grin

countrygirl99 · 15/11/2020 13:37

I was working from home long hours trying to organise PPE. Self employed DH work dried up completely and both DS were furloughed and at risk of redundancy. DS2 was supposed to be getting married. DS1 couldn't see his girlfriend for weeks. Both ILs (82) had a major medical emergencies. Lack of social interaction caused my mums dementia to worsen and my 93yo dad's mobility to deteriorate which led to multiple hospitalisations following falls. Yeah, it was a lovely time. Wish we could do it all again.

Mcmole · 15/11/2020 13:37

Homeschooling was rubbish during lockdown 1.0, but the weather was good, the peace and quiet in the city was amazing, it seemed like there was plenty to do, lots of possibilities, and crucially we didn't realise how long this was going to drag on for. I managed to lose 2 stone by staying committed to diet and exercise.

Now it is just a grind as the weather is shit and it's so dark the whole time that even finding time to get out and exercise is tough and resisting rubbish food is a lot harder. I haven't seen my family since February and don't know when I next will - certainly not Christmas - so definitely feeling pretty glum this time around.

JustDanceAddict · 15/11/2020 13:37

I felt in the first one we were ‘all in it together’ - minus a few knobs, but now there is not as much compliance, the weather is shit (mainly) and we are more stuck in.
The first lockdown was worse for my teens as at least they’re at school/uni now with a purpose to their days (they were in exam years last year).
I think overall it’s ‘worse’, but better for the youngsters.

DialsMavis · 15/11/2020 13:38

Loved lockdown one, weather beautiful, wfh, DH furloughed, loads of much needed time with kids, swimming in sea once that was allowed, I was drunk all the time with a belly full of crisps.

Lockdown 2 is cold and wet and I have committed to not getting hideously fat again so I keep having to go running in the cold and rain and I'm eating all Bran instead of crisps and drinking water instead of booze... Still wfh though and kids are being educated so that's a plus

Laiste · 15/11/2020 13:40

I'm so glad it's OK to say you had an ok time during lock down #1.

Our household (5 adults one child) were/are lucky enough to all be in secure jobs and were/are either furloughed on full pay or working right through.

The sunshine, the peace, the sudden lack of everyone needing to be up at x, y, z time, or fed at x, y, z time, or out of the bathroom by x, y, z time - it was really relaxing.

DH managed to finally get the patio laid (stones were delivered before lockdown) and 3 big new windows put in (the new ones'd been waiting in the garage for over a year). And he even had 4 weeks total rest which he had been talking about needing for 2 or 3 years now - never expecting to get the chance (Physical job)

I was worried about DD4 (6) schooling, but she's picked up just fine in her new year.

Sidge · 15/11/2020 13:40

My life hasn’t really changed at all for lockdown v2.0.

I’m going to work and we’re busier than ever.

Kids are going to school.

I can go to Tesco for groceries.

I can meet one friend for a walk and takeaway coffee.

I can exercise as much as I like. My PT is still doing my sessions 1-1 outside, socially distanced.

Doesn’t feel like a lockdown to me!

Lelophants · 15/11/2020 13:41

We're not in it together anymore. People are doing what they want, still. People complied a lot more last time (at least it felt that way). It was also decent weather and summer was coming. A unique opportunity to slow down and appreciate each other.

Now it's just crap!

ShinyGreenElephant · 15/11/2020 13:45

Totally agree - the first one DD was in primary so I homeschooled her my own way which we both enjoyed, my husband was home, the sun shone and noone I knew got ill. This time I'm home alone with 2 kids, weve all got covid and I'm pregnant as well, my gran died of covid last month and most of my family now have it and are all ill to varying degrees, weathers shit and the home learning set by school is god awful due to half the teaching staff being off sick, yet they pile the pressure on for it to be completed. DD has been off isolating nearly as much as shes been in - being back at school under these circumstances is more disruptive than being off

Crinkle77 · 15/11/2020 13:52

In a way this lockdown is more bearable because at least we can meet people outdoors and some things are open like garden centres and there's no queuing for the supermarket which I hated. The only thing that is worse this time is the crap weather and dark nights.

m0therofdragons · 15/11/2020 13:54

I miss the quiet roads and everyone walking in the middle of the country roads finding walks to villages and smiling and saying hello to random people because the situation was just so weird. Everyone is tired and grumpy and roads are no different to normal. I’ve gone to work throughout both but this one doesn’t feel much different to normal life as I still take dc to school and head to work but I don’t have holidays, theatre trips etc to look forward to and that’s something I’m finding hard. Florida holiday moved to next year but still no real idea if it will happen.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/11/2020 13:58

The empty roads were nice
Sweating in Summer in PPE less so.

Roads are busier now this Lockdown
NHS PPE still sweaty but maybe I'm tolerating it better ?

nosswith · 15/11/2020 13:59

I get where the OP is coming from. No bluebells, no walking in the middle of roads, longer evenings.

isthismylifenow · 15/11/2020 14:03

Our lockdown was during winter and I do have nostalgia about it. Even though I worked all the way through I got to sleep in a bit later in the mornings and there was no rush to do anything. Every time I hear the Blinding Lights song it bring back such nice memories of my dd trying to get me to somehow remember those dance moves. We had another one here Jerusalema which I was just as bad at.

Our version of banana bread was pineapple beer as alcohol was banned so the thing was to make your own.

We also had that silly egg challenge which surprisingly most people did.

We ate a lot of slow cooked warming meals that I had more time to make, spent such quality time with my dc, so although in was an awful time, I was very memorable.

ramblingsonthego · 15/11/2020 14:04

Other than daughter being in childcare (way better) this lockdown is no different for people without a garden or outside space! It was hell then and its hell now. Yes we can go to the parks this time round (but we don't have the weather), but its still a big pile of steaming shit.

We are trying to move house at the same time (to finally have a garden), and everything is getting delayed due to hang ups from lockdown 1 and the demand for moving services such as surveyors, solicitors and removals etc.....

Bubblemonkey · 15/11/2020 14:04

there's no queues for the local tesco AND there's bog roll this time Grin

Emmie12345 · 15/11/2020 14:05

Just went to my local Sainsbury for a chicken for a roast

Omg insanely busy - literally like Xmas eve ! Why ???

IcedPurple · 15/11/2020 14:07

Perhaps because you're not the only person who needed to buy a chicken.
Covidchameleon · 15/11/2020 14:13

@isthismylifenow ooh can you elaborate on pineapple beer.

x2boys · 15/11/2020 14:16

These half measures are making me more anxious tbh,my ds1 is on his second two week period of self isolation,at least in the lockdown version 1 everyone was missing school not in and out like this🙄

LEELULUMPKIN · 15/11/2020 14:22

Yes The Crown has been available since 8am.
