George Michael - the whole of the Faith album is fab. Also, the Pet Shop Boys - Discography is one of my favourite albums of all time.
The soundtracks to Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman were played constantly in the late 80s on my ghetto blaster (well, I say ghetto blaster - it was a red radio/tape player, but calling it that seemed way cooler!). Also, loved Requiem by The London Boys, Shakin' Stevens (I'm not even going to feel embarrassed by that) and a lot of the PWL stuff! Oh, I miss the 80s so much :)

wizzler · 15/11/2020 07:51

Deacon Blue .. all of the Raintown album but especially Chocolate girl
Roddy Frame / Aztec camera
Del Amitri : Nothing ever happens...

Party fears two. The associates. Best song ever

ILikeTrains · 15/11/2020 12:06

The anonymity of Mumsnet makes me so suspicious - like right now I'm thinking the op is actually a one hit wonder from the eighties and they're desperately hoping to see their name appear in someone's list.

So come on OP who are you?
Nena? - 99 Red Balloons,
Bobby McFerrin? - 'Don't Worry Be Happy
One of The Weather Girls? - 'It's Raining Men'

In answer to your questions, one of my favourite songs to warble along to from the eighties is Love is Contagious by Taja Seville

StillCoughingandLaughing · 15/11/2020 12:18

I second the poster who said Taylor Dayne - my favourite singer, with a massively underrated voice. Everyone remembers ‘Tell it to My Heart’, but tracks like ‘Prove Your Love’ and ‘I’ll Be Your Shelter’ are also awesome.

For uplifting tracks, you can’t help smiling at anything by Voice of the Beehive. ‘Don’t Call Me Baby’ is one of the most perfect pop records ever.

For something a bit more calming/heartfelt, I’d always recommend Julia Fordham. ‘Where Does the Time Go?’ is a classic.

Should’ve been hits but weren’t:

Swimming With Sharks - Careless Love
Darling Buds - Burst
Blue Mercedes - Love is the Gun
Tiffany - All This Time
Bangles - Following
Kirsty McColl - Free World

Well-known artists, but lesser-known songs:

Belinda Carlisle - I Get Weak
Black - Paradise
Then Jericho - Sugar Box
Swing Out Sister - You on my Mind

That last one is particularly special to me, as it’s essentially the story of the biggest relationship in my life ❤️

StillCoughingandLaughing · 15/11/2020 12:20

Ooh, I forgot ‘Lucy’ by Habit.
