Lotto Ticket Winnings

I have just seen a story on Facebook about an aunty who bought her nephew a winning lotto ticket as a gift to him.
She claims she deserves all the money paid back to her since she’s the buyer of this lotto ticket Hmm

IMO I think she’s a CF for asking for the price money back because a gift is gifted and not taken back Smile she’s entitled to nothing back

Would you expect to be given the winnings back? Or if you was the receiver of the lotto ticket would you give some of the winnings back to who ever gifted you it?

That was years ago in America.
The “auntie” took him to court to claim 50% and the judge laughed her out of court!

A lotto ticket would be a pretty shit gift if the recipient didn't get to keep the winnings! Of course the nephew should keep the money.

In that situation, I might choose to share some of the winnings with the person who bought the ticket, but I wouldn't expect them to demand this.

Twigletfairy · 14/11/2020 17:38

I would give her the 2 quid or whatever it cost, just to piss her off

HotSince63 · 14/11/2020 17:39

As the giver I wouldn't expect to receive any money from any winnings, although obviously it would be nice.

As the receiver, I wouldn't tell anyone that I'd won any money, I'd keep it really quiet (if we are talking about a large sum of money) and no I wouldn't automatically think I must give some money to whoever gave me the ticket as a gift.

I won £2.10 last night after my mum told me there was a big jackpot. If she even tries to claim half...

WorraLiberty · 14/11/2020 17:40

ALL of the money? Confused

I would have given her the cost of the ticket back either in 1p's or in the form of a cheque! Just to really piss her off!
HotSince63 · 14/11/2020 17:52

I would have given her the cost of the ticket back either in 1p's or in the form of a cheque!

And then I'd "CANCEL THE CHEQUE!" Grin

itchyfinger · 14/11/2020 17:53

What's the point of giving it as a gift if you expect the winnings? Why not just keep the ticket for yourself. If she had gone about it more nicely the nephew would have probably given her some!

TheDowagerDuchess · 14/11/2020 17:53

Why give it if you expect any winnings given back? Makes no sense!

Mind you, if someone gave me a winning ticket I’d give them a cut!

safariboot · 14/11/2020 17:57

She's a grabby aunt and deserves nothing for demanding everything.

ForeverBubblegum · 14/11/2020 18:03

I you expect the winning back your not giving a gift your just delighting the job of checking numbers on your ticket.

I'd think aunt was a CF for asking, and that would probably sour the relationship. However if I'd received the gift and they hadn't asked, I'd probably have gifted them some or spent some on significant gifts for the giver.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/11/2020 18:15

What did she expect to happen?

She might as well have given him an old ticket which she knew hadn't won anything!

A friend of mine's Dad once paid for her to go play bingo with the rest of the family, as she didn't really have the funds for such frivolities at the time. She won £70 and when they got home he opened the envelope with her winnings in, made two piles of notes, and promptly took half. I was aghast.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/11/2020 18:41

@MinistryOfTragic

That's awful. With Bingo there is a very high level of skill with that 'Dobber' thingy. Whilst the lottery is pot luck with Ernie (or whoever it is now) just rummaging around in big barrel of tickets.
Or on second thoughts is that Premium Bonds?

MinistryOfTragic · 14/11/2020 18:58

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles it's an acquired skill for sure. I played once and I've never been so stressed. 😂 😂 😂 I remember right at the start, telling my mate to go get us some drinks from the bar and that I'd do her ticket for her. Dear God, never again.
