My one year old absolutely refuses to wear a bib of any kind so have had to buy the wearable aprons for her when she’s eating anything messy and can’t do much about the slobber as she won’t wear a bib as she just rips them off

My daughter is 20 months and wore the Jojo long sleeved ones pretty much from when she started weaning but over the summer she started pulling them off, got her an apron one which she happily wears and she’s just recently started wearing normal bibs again, rips them off the second she’s finished eating though, but it’s better than while she’s shovelling it in! I think it was just a way of asserting her independence.

tappitytaptap · 14/11/2020 17:10

DS1 aged 4.5 wore one til 3, his younger brother aged 2 likes to rip them off to be like big bro! The smock things you mention are smart to stop eg pasta stained tops Wink

NannyR · 14/11/2020 17:11

Probably around twenty months, I just took off her top and let her eat in her vest if it was something particularly messy like bolognese.

38weekswithno2 · 14/11/2020 17:12

My 4yo still wears them with no fuss, he likes to be clean 🤣
I'm struggling to find bigger ones though now.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/11/2020 17:17

DD hated bibs. I had half dozen £1 cheap supermarket t shirts which were at least 2 sizes too big, I’d pop that over her clothes at meal times. We called them grubsters, they did the trick.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 14/11/2020 17:18

Before one, wouldn't have a bar of them, I just strip him before meals at home and if we're eating out hope it's something not too messy and dress him in layers....

HelpMePlease435 · 14/11/2020 17:19

Nursery have had a nightmare with her ripping off the bibs so she always comes home with orange stained tops from bolognese, soup etc

We only ever had the long sleeved apron/overall things - DS refused any sort of spoon feeding when we started weaning so he fed himself from the start which was messy... He's now 2y4m and will not eat his breakfast without the overall on, but won't eat any other meal with it on. It feels like one of those battles with a toddler that aren't worth fighting!

UndertheCedartree · 14/11/2020 17:23

Once eating they wore the long sleeved bibs probably until about 15-18 months when they stopped using a high chair and wanted to be grown up sitting on their own chair. I kept a flannel handy and also have been known to strip their top off if the food was particularly messy.

Ethelfleda · 14/11/2020 17:23

We never really bothered to be fair.
But we probably fed him longer than we needed to, rather than let him get stuck in Blush
But, in all honesty, he is 3 now and can use cutlery with no issues and doesnt really soil his clothes that much (floor is another matter though!)
Also - he has never really been in to ‘saucy’ type dinners. More of a mash, veg and protein type kid. He won’t eat the curry I lovingly make Grin

SquigglePigs · 14/11/2020 17:29

My 23 month old wore them happily until about 2 weeks ago. Now it's about 50/50 whether she'll keep them on or not. I will persist though because her coordination is a little variable still.

toddlingthroughtoddlerhood · 14/11/2020 17:43

Reliably until about 18 months. He is 2 now and wears them for cereal and saucy food on the basis he can eat the food twice if he wears a bib... takes it off as soon as the messy part such as cereal and milk is done before the toast course.
Occasionally random refusal As is a toddlers prerogative Smile

HelpMePlease435 · 14/11/2020 17:43

She’s 16 months and still eats things like mash with her hands as she can do that quicker than using a fork Hmm

My 4yr old still does sometimes when eating beans/bolognaise/messy food. I think they look a bit weird at his age but he likes them and they work so.. 🤷🏻‍♀️

purpleme12 · 14/11/2020 18:02

Mine still wears one when we have a messy meal she's 7 🤣
The type that can catch food in
Obviously not when we're out

Phineyj · 14/11/2020 18:24

Till about 3.5, most of the time (the kerchief kind). Messy eater and committed dribbler!

Ratatcat · 14/11/2020 18:33

Child no.1 dutifully wore them well into her 2s. Child no.2 is having none of it and has been ripping them off since about 13m. We put a tea towel round her for really messy things but otherwise just let her crack on. She seems neater than no.1

Moo678 · 14/11/2020 18:39

My 2.5 yr old is still wearing the IKEA long sleeve bibs. I sometimes don’t bother at lunch or if her outfit is grubby at the end of the day anyway but she always wears it for breakfast - she spills milk and usually dinner. She comes home clean from nursery so assume she wears one there too.

Rubyupbeat · 14/11/2020 18:45

I still wear one at 56.....well, I lay a tea towel over my chest if I am on my own and eating a curry or soup.....sad I know.

scrivette · 14/11/2020 18:46

My 2 and 5 year old sometimes have a muslin tied around them/tucked in if they are eating something particularly messy with a light coloured top.

Could you try a long sleeved top in a much larger size?

User24689 · 14/11/2020 18:48

My eldest was wearing one til about 18 months or so. My youngest wore one til he was old enough to pull it off. Definitely well under one.

Isoisoisolation · 14/11/2020 18:50

Never used them....if they get messy I just changed their top. Yes I have a mountain of washing but it wasn't worth the tears

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 14/11/2020 18:51

When she was too big for them. She's now 8 & wears a cloth napkin... she is a tremendously messy child. Hmm

Merename · 14/11/2020 18:59

With DD2 she’s still going strong at 2 and a bit with 2 bibs per meal! We do a long sleeve one and then a catchy one on top. I don’t think she’s realised she could take them off. She has refused to have them on many a time but we say ‘no bib no food’ and she goes with it.
