Why are addicts usually men?

Am I stereotyping here?

I know of a number of alcoholics who are female, but a larger number of men who are gambling addicts, alcoholics or addicted to porn?

Equally it seems to be mainly men who walk on their wives and children for another woman.

Makes me lose hope in men in general

Our city centre has a lot of homeless people, many walking around in a drug stupour or fighting. Only seen 3 women, rest are all men

Quaagars · 14/11/2020 18:23

You don't have to be "in a stupour" or fighting to be an addict though.

I would agree with this statement.

It's because men who, are addicts are more likely to be counted. Same old bollocks, of misogyny

Yes! And another reason society doesn't come into contact with as many female addicts; within a co-dependent relationship, the man usually scores and controls their drug use.

I attended a treatment centre in Ipswich in 2006, when those 5 prostituted women were murdered. Their male partners received a lot of help (food, financial) because they were bereft that they no longer had a woman to ponce off. I guess men are better at being heard.

Anxioustoddler · 14/11/2020 18:34

I volunteer with female addicts, there are a lot of them.

Females are less likely (statistically) to end up on the streets, so less visible as such.

sirfredfredgeorge · 14/11/2020 18:48

Lots of research on the subject, for example women are more likely to become addicted to drugs once they're a user - but more men tend to start taking drugs, so overall drug addicts are more likely to be male, but if you're female and start taking drugs you may well progress to addiction quicker. Women are also more likely to overdose.

But many of the sex differences are still down to cultural norms (it's more acceptable still for an 18year old man to be out every night getting drunk, so the path to alcohol dependence is easier for a man) but there are probably some differences due to hormone response too.

Whatisthisfuckery · 14/11/2020 18:55

you definitely see more male addicts on the streets but that doesn’t mean the women aren’t somewhere. There are plenty of female addicts OP, at least as many as there are men.

But they are. They take spice and this is literally how they are

A person can be addicted to other drugs than spice. Different drugs have different effects. There are also many functioning addicts. Not all addicts are stumbling around your local town centres, can of strong lager in hand,.

I didn't realise people still had such a narrow view of addiction. It really can affect anyone.

Bookworming · 14/11/2020 20:36

@SomelikeitHoth do you think it might be because the men are "traditionally" the ones to leave the family home in the event of a break up?

You're extremely narrow minded about addiction and homelessness.

MorganKitten · 14/11/2020 20:42

Women have a higher risk of relapse. And it depends of what the addiction is as women have higher ‘legal’ drug misuse like pain killers and anti depression drugs when not needed.

HahaFunnyNumber · 14/11/2020 20:56

I'm biologically female and an addict. Someone's sex doesn't denote how likely they are to struggle with addiction.

isitsummertimeyet · 14/11/2020 23:49

more woman i know are more drink dependant than the males i know

men tend to gamble more than women but i disagree that men in general are more likely to be addicts, its much of a muchness
