To ask if you can push your pram up steps?

I have 5 steps that go from street level to my front garden path (no driveway).

Is it possibly to push a pram with a baby in up and down the steps? And if so, can you recommend a good pram for steps?

(I’m not planning on doing this when newborn - I know you’re not meant to bump them about)

I do occasionally bump up and down steps but dont like doing it. We lived on the 3rd floor with our first and I just carried the baby up in the bassinet then head back down for the wheels. Then when he was bigger I would carry him on my hip and the folded down pram in the other hand. Taught him to do stairs very young to ditch the pram as quickly as possible Grin. The alternative is to keep it in the car.

As others say, most pushchairs can be readily bumped backwards up stairs. You could get a carrycot with a harness (like the Matrix Light). We had a Matrix Light 2 as our carseat but I loved the added bonus that DD could be secured in the carrycot in pram mode as well!

Not if you’ve had a c section. Mine was unexpected, I only had one step in front of my house and I was basically trapped because I couldn’t get in or out for weeks.

When I had dd1, 20+ years ago. We lived 3 floors up.
Every Morning I would bump the heavy pram down the stairs.
Sometimes my Dad would take it down and leave it outside on the pavement before he went to work it usually stayed there sometimes with dd in it until he came home.

EncroachingLoaf · 15/11/2020 23:20

I have 4 steps onto the pavement from my path, similar to you op. It's just one of those things that seems daunting and difficult but you get used to it and it's fine.

I always just bumped them up and down gently as others have described. Even while the baby was asleep it was fine. I did use a sling a lot when just popping out though.

Thanks guys, sounds like a lighter pram might be the way to go. Hoping to go and try some out post-lockdown

I had a silver cross surf 6 years ago the suspension was amazing I’m on the 1st floor and could push it down a my flight of stairs smoothly and easily not with ds in but probably could have and have definitely done five steps and the back wheels where definitely bigger I’d definitely go for bigger wheels Wink

User478 · 16/11/2020 08:20

I'd get a sling. DD was so much happier in the sling and you can go up as many steps you want.

(We lived in a flat when DD was tiny, we kept the buggy in the car)

JemimaTiggywinkle · 16/11/2020 09:24

Thank you.
I was wondering whether it would be easier to keep the pram in the car instead of the house, but then it also seems like a hassle to carry the baby to the car, get the pram out etc if I’m not actually going out in the car.

Will definitely look at slings too

I go backwards and pull my pram up. I have 4 steps going down to my garden.

Werk · 16/11/2020 09:50

Yy to bumping up and down - I even did it with a double.
You get surprisingly good at doing it in a very gentle way, especially if your baby is asleep Grin

But yes, where possible I used to use my sling.

olderthanyouthink · 18/11/2020 15:16

SIL kept the pram frame in the car and the carry cot in the flat at first. Then I think the seat was also in the car and they used a carrier to get down to the car

PrayingandHoping · 18/11/2020 15:21

I have a Mountain Buggy Urban Jungle and would have no issues at all with steps

Sometimesonly · 18/11/2020 15:26

Bigger wheels are easier. I did this all the time as my double buggy wouldn't fit in the lift (flat). Did my back in after a while though!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 18/11/2020 15:26

@PrayingandHoping thank you - mountain buggy urban jungle is on my list to look at. Would you recommend it? Any downsides?

Mountain swift here. 15 steps. The wheels are large enough it bounces up and down them several times a day no problem. I could carry pram, bouncing far easier.

Cupoftchaiagain · 18/11/2020 15:35

Recommend an out n about nipper for flights of steps
Or a very light buggy if u might just carry it it.
If u can park nearby I would definitely leave the pram base in the car and take the carrycot in for that stage.

PrayingandHoping · 18/11/2020 15:38

Errrmmm.... the carrycot/parent facing seat has a knack to getting on and off.

Other than that no very pleased with it! It's been everywhere and anywhere! Easy and light and use. My brother had one that lasted all 3 of his kids which is why we went for it.

clearbluebastards · 18/11/2020 15:48

@BumblebeeBum

You can turn around and pull a pram up steps by bumping it up each one. You’d need one which has wheels smaller than the step depth.
Really? I've bumped up steps regardless of size
MeadowHay · 18/11/2020 15:53

Plenty of people do this without issue if you've not got much other choice.

I live in a house with 4 steep steps to entrance. As a newborn I would detach the carry cot and take her inside in that first. Then fold the pram base down outside and bring it in. She outgrow the carry cot when she was about 5 months old. At that point when we switched to the seat attachment I just bumped her up and down the steps without issue. Go backwards for going in, forwards for going out. Still do it now in the same Cosatto puschair and she's 2.5. We also have a Joie Nitro that I haven't been able to do this with for a very long time because the brake is in a stupid place that means it would often catch and turn on when bumping up/down steps which as she got heavier became dangerous for me, although DH still does it with little issue.
