Even though we are in lockdown and it's not actually anyone's birthday?

Well the cashier in my local Tesco has given me a royal earbashing. Purchased a birthday cake amongst my groceries cause I fancied bday cake and I just thought fuck it, I've had very shit week so I'm going to sit tonight and have a slice or 2?!

Cashier says ooh, is it someone's birthday today?

Que my response, oh, no just fancied birthday cake. I know it's a bit strange.

Cashier replies, well that's selfish.

Me: I'm sorry?

Cashier: You should leave them for people who are actually having their birthday.

I was so baffled I just paid and left. Am I really being unreasonable to buy birthday cake when it's not my birthday?

Fwiw the shelves were not exactly bare in the birthday cake section..

YANBU! I don't go to my local sainsbury often, but whenever I do there tends to be loads of bday cakes in the yellow sticker section so I pick one up!

Wouldn't justify full price for my fatness otherwise though, as they just aren't worth it.

How ridiculous. I bought a huge birthday cake the other day as it was reduced to £1.24! Clearly nobody was desperate to buy it as it was still on the shelf.

Least unreasonable person on AIBU ever. I fucking love supermarket birthday cake, even better if it’s from the reduced section. Don’t do it very often but inhale the thing when I do. My favourite are the ones with lots of sugary fondant icing.

I once bought a Dora the explorer birthday cake because I walked past the oops bin and it was there.

I absolutely hate it when the cashier comments on what I’m buying.
I love magazines like take a break, chat etc. The number of times I’ve been asked by the cashier ‘how do you read that rubbish?’ etc.
I’ve even had one stop scanning to read the front cover before, tutted, looked at me and then roll their eyes!

Next time you know to real out the standard response ‘it’s for a friend’.

Report the cashier, they need training to learn to keep unnecessary opinions about customers purchases to themselves.

Next time tell her you’ll stick a candle in it if it makes her feel better.

I wish I had some cake 🍰.

Even more so when they theatrically shout "eh Brenda have you seen these?" to the cashier 3 aisles down whilst waving your purchase.

Should have told her to mind her bloody business. I bought a birthday cake whenever they were in the reduced section through pregnancy because I craved anything sweet and it hit the spot! It doesn't have to be anyone's birthday, your money is as good as anyone elses.

I can 100% believe this happened, it’s the COVID mentally where everyone should only be buying things they absolutely need or you’re considered selfish

If everyone bought anything there would be none for the people who really need it.

It’s a bit like saying that people who buy tampons for nose bleeds, well if everyone did it... they’re not going to and tampons are more needed than cake.

DH buys birthday cakes all the time because he likes the icing but not so much the cake. Luckily I like the cake and not so much the icing. It's safe to say it doesn't take us long to demolish one! YANBU OP, cashier was weird.

I sometimes buy PVA glue to spread on my hand, let it dry, then peel it off, and don't use it for arts and crafts at all.
