My baby just put a dead shrew in her mouth

Posting in AIBU for traffic, and to ask for a hand hold while I get over this horror.

We live in an old victorian house (with many mouse holes) in the country and have a cat to manage the rodent populus, but he also sometimes brings things in . I always check the floor of the snug for anything and disinfect/scrub if he has before putting her down to play.

But this time he put it under a toy in her play pen and I didn't see it and she picked it up and put it in her mouth before I could lauch myself at her to get it out. I am horrified.

Messages of support please. Also accounts of children who have survived to adulthood after putting disgusting things in their mouths. Tell me your worst. I need to hear it.

My brother ate a worm, still alive and just as annoying 20 years later 😂 this will make you laugh one day and you can embarrass your little one with the story

PurpleHoodie · 12/11/2020 16:52

Oh my. That is GRIM.

I do apologise, but if I were you friend sitting next to you, I'd laughter like a drain for 10 minutes, then pour you a large, large (name your drink) to get through - not over - the shock.

I'd also do the task of wiping babies mouth.

Whilst silent laughing.

Jubaju · 12/11/2020 16:54

Oh god! The horror 😬
I had this but was a false alarm as the baby came crawling in with a cat toy mouse in her mouth not a dead one 🤢

isseywith4vampirecats · 12/11/2020 16:54

Apparently when i was a toddler according to my mom i used to sit on the back step and eat anything that crawled or walked past me worms, spiders bugs and at 64 years old im still here and very healthy

I hadn't realised that the cat had brought a dead blackbird into the living room until I saw DS2 with feathers in his mouth. Grim, but he is ok.

MerlotChiantiMontepulicano · 12/11/2020 16:56

My DS used to lick his pram wheels.

I'm sure she'll be fine OP.

user1294729492759 · 12/11/2020 16:56

That is a bit unfortunate.

grassisjeweled · 12/11/2020 16:56

DD ate a dandelion the other week.

grassisjeweled · 12/11/2020 16:57

As a kid I used to eat raw sausage and bacon. Fed to by my mother Confused

Bubbletrouble43 · 12/11/2020 16:58

Dd1 put a slug in her mouth in the garden once 😱

MeringueCloud · 12/11/2020 16:58

My friend's cat brought in a dead baby rabbit and her toddler picked it up and carried it round the house.

BrumBoo · 12/11/2020 16:58

My eldest won't eat most food due to sensory issues. As a toddler though, he tried to eat a poo in the park (I managed to stop him), sand, sudocreme, playdough.... if it was non-edable hes try to eat it.

JuliaJohnston · 12/11/2020 16:59

Did the cat definitely kill it? The only reason I'd worry is because of the (tiny) risk it had been poisoned.

But then your baby didn't actually eat it, so...

Wineandpyjamas · 12/11/2020 17:00

My 2 year old has eaten some cat puke and a few months ago we were on a walk, I turned round to check on her (she was lagging as per) and she had red stains around her mouth. I just hoped to god it was a blackberry and not something more suspect. She suffered no ill effects which was lucky! Small children are remarkably resilient.

A dead shrew though - that is 🤢

Tfoot75 · 12/11/2020 17:00

Not in her mouth but my dd now 4 came to show me a dead mouse she was lovingly cradling once when she was a toddler. She got the shock of her life when I screamed and batted it out of her hands but she doesn't seem to be permanently scarred by that Grin

AgentProvocateur · 12/11/2020 17:02

When my youngest son was at school, he used to eat live ants at break (not in the U.K. - he was used to having fried crickets as a street snack, and I think thought all insects were edible). My oldest son once ate a whole raw chicken breast. Both survived to tell the tale.

SingleHandSue · 12/11/2020 17:02

Oh god op you poor thing!

I thought it was bad enough when DS1 ate a massive spider or when DS2 chewed on the loo brush.

It is very funny though and I’m sure you’ll tell this tale for many years to come.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 12/11/2020 17:03

You should be honoured. The cat is bringing your dd gifts........it obviously thinks a lot of her 😂😂😂

Frazzled13 · 12/11/2020 17:03

I fished a (quite large) snail out of DD’s mouth once.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 12/11/2020 17:03

My daughter ate a large earthworm (after being dared by her brother) and licked a cat’s bum (again, her brother & cousin). And put a dead frog in her mouth of her own accord.

She was 2 then. She turned 24 a few weeks ago. (And her cousin, 29 & brother, 28, still bring the story up every Christmas!). And she used to suck the dogs ears. Still alive.

If your child has any scratch marks or injuries around her mouth, call 111 (outside chance of tetanus perhaps), otherwise make sure they drink well, keep an eye for temperature changes/vomiting etc & seek professional help if needed.

But I’m sure everything will be fine.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 12/11/2020 17:04

My sister used to eat dead woodlice. My mum had to hoover every morning but she still often managed to find a few crunchy nuggets.

lottiegarbanzo · 12/11/2020 17:05

Oh dear OP! Sorry but that's really made me giggle.

I'm guessing she didn't actually eat any, just in and out?

Metanium cream was probably my most worrying, it looks so toxic. I looked it up here and found I wasn't the first and all would be well Smile

x2boys · 12/11/2020 17:06

My uncle apparently was eating a dead frog when my Grandma found him in the backyard when he was about three ,he's about 70 now .

TonTonMacoute · 12/11/2020 17:06

Marcel Pagnol (who wrote Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources) wrote a memoir and admitted that he once gave his baby sister goat droppings to eat, telling her they were chocolate.

He felt really guilty afterwards, and owned up to his big brother, and asked if if he thought she'd die.

'Oh no, she'll be fine. If did the same to you when you were little and it didn't do you any harm!'
