To Wonder Why DS is classed as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable?

We got a letter from the Department of Health in the 1st lockdown and another one recently about DS being clinically extremely vulnerable and ‘at highest risk of becoming very unwell if he catches CV’. I did try to get through to our GP at that time to ask why he was on the list but couldn’t get through so didn’t bother chasing it. Tried again today but gave up after 30mins waiting to get through.

He has ASD and a mild learning disability, no other medical issues (not had he ever had any), in fact he’s extremely healthy and pretty much self sufficient now at age 18.

Do I assume this is a mistake? He goes to college (although according to his letter he shouldn’t) although there have been some positive cases in his bubble so he’s having to self isolate at the moment. Even more worrying to get this letter at this time!

I would question it because there may be a mistake on his records?

My worry would be that that may impact him in the future.

No idea why I used al those capital letters in the title btw!

I got a letter this second time that was a mistake - definitely possible. Can you send a message to your GP reception asking them to let you know the reasoning?

Daphnise · 12/11/2020 16:25

Can't say why he had the letter.

But I can say it will be impossible to remove his name from the list!

And that no one will say how it got there.

I work in a surgery and we had a email about NHSE sending letters out to people who didn't need it. It was a huge mistake. So he's probably one of the people who have received this letter.

RizzleDrizzle · 12/11/2020 16:42

Is he in any medication?

A friend of mine got the shrilling letters because of her medications and when she phoned her doctor it was just because of that one medication and he was happy to say ignore it.

Givemeabreak88 · 12/11/2020 16:44

I had one the first time around because my daughter has sickle cell trait, they shouldn’t have sent it and sent it in error, I didn’t know why she had got it at first, I was extremely confused!

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 12/11/2020 16:45

Neurological disability is a 'moderate' risk factor on its own, but if he has multiple factors the GP can bump him up the list to ECV. Could it be that?

myneighboursarerude · 12/11/2020 17:05

We got one for DH. Queried it with doctor to be told ‘for his diabetes’ - he is not nor has he ever been diabetic.

sueelleker · 12/11/2020 17:12

he is not nor has he ever been diabetic. That's worrying-I'd ask to see his medical records as soon as you can; goodness knows what else they might have got wrong!

flumposie · 12/11/2020 17:18

I've also had one. I had asthma years ago Hmm

caringcarer · 12/11/2020 17:27

My D's has a moderate learning disability and ASD. He goes to a special school but he is physically healthy and he has not had a letter not do I think he needs one. I would think it must be a mistake.

YoungerThanILookOlderThanIFeel · 12/11/2020 18:33

DS is not on medication and has never had any physical ailments or any other factors.

Well I finally got through to our surgery after being on hold for 50 minutes, the receptionist said she can see on the screen that he is marked as CEV but not why so she will ask admin to check and I’ll need to call back in a few days as they’re too busy to phone me! Bloody ridiculous.

Well I suppose he won’t have to wait long for the vaccine at least as he’ll be near the top of the list not that he needs to be and I’m keen on him going first either! Do you think we’ll be able to defer it?

Sorry not keen on him going first either!

My DS has the same condition (ASD & mild LDs) and in a special school. He's probably the healthiest in the family with regard to viruses. In fact, I always refuse the flu jab as I honestly don't believe he needs it (not an anti vaxxer by the way) Perhaps it's a mistake

ILoveAnOwl · 12/11/2020 18:48

We had similar. Ds has a physical disability but with a limb so I really couldn't see why he'd be at more risk. I emailed his paediatrician who confirmed it was a mistake.

@flumposie

Me too, haven't had a puffer for about 8-10 years. Though I did also have cervical cancer years ago (given full all clear years ago too).
x2boys · 12/11/2020 19:10

My son has severe autism and learning disabilities we haven't had a letter ,he's an otherwise healthy child .
