Short hair when you are thicker than a snicker?

CloudyVanilla · 12/11/2020 13:02

So I recently (well, over the first quarantine) took my hair from dark to very light blonde.

Loved it but the damage was.. a lot.

I had to cut several inches off my hair with the feeling to leave it in a bun for several months to grow out, as I have always been a long haired woman and due to the (fine yet) thickness of my hair I always considered it too fly away and thick to be short .

But since taking good care of my hair and getting a good cut it has grown an inch or so into a reallt pretty and feminine cut that I never thought I could have! I always envied women who could pull off short (as in bob length hair). Having it shorter also gives me the option of colouring it again which is great.

My only problem is while I like my shape plenty, I am not slim. I have an hourglass figure but it is a 14 on bottom and 10 - 12 on top now I have shifted a fair amount of baby weight.

My question is, do you think short hair can be flattering on women with, ahem, wider hips? I used to always wear extensions when going out as I felt they made me look more in proportion and I literally couldn't bear to go out without them.

I have honestly never considered body shape when thinking about a hair style, I don't think they've any bearing on each other. It's more the shape of your face that counts.

0blio · 12/11/2020 13:07

What? How strange ConfusedGrin

CloudyVanilla · 12/11/2020 13:10

Thank you I am hoping you are right! I used to have this volumising hair spray that had written on it: "The bigger the hair, the smaller the hips" and to be honest I have always felt that way about myself! I've never considered short hair because of it but I love the way it looks with my face - it is heartshaped and I worry the length can make it look at little lost

I think face shape is more important for short hair than body shape. If you carry weight on your face like me (double chin/ undefined cheek bones) a longer hair cut is probably more flattering for you but if not go for it. There are lots of apps out there that will let you try on a cut for size without committing to anything.

@0blio I know I'm starting to feel like the only woman who has felt like this Halloween Grin 😅

I have short hair OP and w i d e hips. Now I'm going to think about it!

You're not. I think I look better with my hair down/big and curly because I'm def not skinny. I think with a tight ponytail or a tidy bun I look like my body is too big for my head/Miss Trunchbull.

FrightClub · 12/11/2020 13:16

Just when I thought the beauty industry had worked out all the ways to fuck with women's heads, there's 'the bigger the hair, the smaller the hips'.

What else? 'The bigger the glasses, the smaller the bum'? 'The bigger the fingernails, the smaller the bingo wings'?

CloudyVanilla · 12/11/2020 13:17

Thank you for your advice :) My mum has quite a long face and I similar because I have the pointed chin but a massive wide forehead. I think the bob suits so much better so I feel better now :)

@ZolaGrey right!! I can wear my hair up but only with lots of volume otherwise I look like an ostritch Confused

@FrightClub I totally agree with you but those are brilliant 😅😅

I have never really thought about it as shape of body, but those people who I have known with very short hair always seem on the outside to be confident. I would love very short hair but feel I am not able to pull it off and I do lack self confidence.

@FrightClub I agree with the sentiment of all this, AND what OP's talking about is also rooted in truth.

It's a well-known optical illusion (see picture). Most people don't initially realise that the middle circles in both the examples in the picture are actually the same size, because our brains judge the size of something based on its immediate context.

So something that's equal top and bottom creates a more balanced appearance. And if you put something wide next to something narrow, whether that's hips and hair or chairs and tables, its width appears more significant.

So if OP wants to have her hips appear smaller (or even just the size they are), a bigger hairstyle is likely to help by balancing the shapes top and bottom.

I totally agree the beauty industry is full of shit, but this isn't made-up rubbish, it's just how our brains work with our eyes.

Yesyoudoknowme · 12/11/2020 13:37

I totally get you OP - I think it is because if you are big (I am) with short hair (I have had) you can look 'pin headed'. When I have had short hair I have always given it as much shoosh as I could - even had it permed to give it body - you are not alone!! I have grown mine this year and I am really pleased - but when I go back to continually pulling back into a ponytail I will have it all cut off again...

ladybee28 · 12/11/2020 13:38

And also, OP, wear your hair however you like – if you like how your face looks with this great-sounding new hairstyle, go for it!

Life is too stinking short Grin

Thickhead · 12/11/2020 13:48

I get it OP. A shaved head is my favourite hairstyle on women, and I had it in my 20s, when I was all flat chested and angular. Now I'm a lot curvier, with a post-baby body, and just don't feel a buzz cut looks right on me. I wear a big soft hairstyle now because it feels more in proportion and goes with clothing that suits my shape more. But those are my own hangups - I still think shaved heads look amazing on women, whatever size.

CloudyVanilla · 12/11/2020 14:02

Ah thank you so much for all the positivity!

My partner thinks the cut is very pretty and I think I will go for it and get it trimmer Grin

Excited to go back to platinum again too! Thank you also for pointing out it doesn't necessarily matter if my arse looks huge as long as I am happy Wink

OP posts:
CloudyVanilla · 12/11/2020 14:03

It is not super short too it is a nice non choppy bob so looks like a short version of long hair if that makes sense? so I can still add volume to it to be fair

ladybee28 absolutely - and that's a really great example!

I'm a big hair girl myself, and I do get where CloudyVanilla's coming from - didn't mean to sound po-faced. I know the exact glasses frame ratio I need to stop my face looking square and use it ruthlessly. I just nggggghhhhh at the stuff that gets discussed at marketing meetings and then printed on bottles to make women worry about potential new flaws they hadn't previously considered...

slashlover · 12/11/2020 14:21

I have really short hair and I'm a size 22, couldn't care less.

LilacPebbles · 12/11/2020 14:38

I know what you mean, the gamine look is associated with short hair that's only one type of aesthetic and, like others I think it mainly comes down to face shape. If you pull it off, you pull it off regardless of body type.

ladybee28 · 12/11/2020 14:46

Aaaaaamen to all of that –I'm in total agreement.

You didn't sound po-faced –just (rightfully) pissed off and tired of it all, and I know that for me, I often get so fed up of this stuff that I assume it's ALL snake oil and bollocks when actually it isn't always.

So there may have been some projection going on from my side!

And @CloudyVanilla - it doesn't necessarily matter if my arse looks huge as long as I am happy

Yes, AND there are many, many people who are very much in favour of arses in all their forms - so imagine how great it is to see someone who has an arse AND is happy, rather than being happy despite having an arse!

shitinmyhandsandclap · 12/11/2020 15:11

I know exactly what you mean OP, I was once very, very, very overweight and if my hair wasn't full and big it looked like I had a teeny, tiny pin head lol

0blio · 12/11/2020 18:20

Oh well, I don't think I'll have to grow my hair long as I have a very big head so that should balance out my fat bum!

nemeton · 12/11/2020 18:40

A hairstyle that you like and can manage is all that matters. If you like it, you'll look great.
Body size has nothing to do with it!
