Living in another country for 6 month...

I pitched the idea to DH to move to another country where covid is such an issue for 6 months. We wfh, kid goes to school online. So apart from getting rid of the massive rent we pay in London I don't see a downside. Chuck things in storage and go.

  1. Husband says I'm a gypsy* and you don't uproot and leave for 6 months.
  1. in general: where would you go? On my list: rural Germany, Caribbean island - either one is fine, Sicily, Norway, Finland - all rural.

*Technically probably a bit, but in mentality towards travel: absolutely :)

I'm sure a few on your list won't let you in at the moment

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/11/2020 19:08

Expensive rent in London, but with high deposit, short term lease (if you can even get it there), health insurances, medical care costs (if needed), relocation, your stuff in storage etc it will be really expensive.

I get the idea. I get itchy feet every year! But you have to be realistic about costs. Relocating for 6 months is really costly

Trut · 11/11/2020 19:10

I’d do it! Sicily I think. Relatively warm at this time, easy to travel and cheap

CoffeeandCroissant · 11/11/2020 19:12

If an EU country you would have to arrive by 31 December, otherwise the maximum stay is 90 days in a Schengen zone country and in most cases the same in non Schengen countries.

Rainbowshine · 11/11/2020 19:13

YABU. You need to do your research. Your employment is a massive issue, you can’t just work from anywhere. Tax residency, immigration requirements and what happens to your pension, and any other benefits/insurance sound boring but are very necessary considerations. This won’t be the money saving panacea that you seem to imagine.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/11/2020 19:13

Lovely. But to be boring, lots of companies won’t let their employees WFH from another country due to tax reasons.

But we can dream. So I’m gonna say Botswana in a luxury safari tent.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/11/2020 19:15

Wasn't it Barbados offering free visa for x months if you go there wfh? So smart.

But I don't think they are offering it anymore

Have you got a European passport? If not, Brexit will scuper those plans

TheSunIsStillShining · 11/11/2020 19:32

A few clarifications, sorry, I forgot to add them.

  • We are EU citizens
  • no issue with workplace as we have our own company and our clients are from around the globe anyway and don't care where we actually do the work for them
  • I want to move out of London, not in :)
  • I don't see it as a money saving panacea, albeit a little saving always is good. More like an opportunity to experience another country for longer than a holiday

Many countries actually let in people if they are staying longer, quarantine at the start and prove they have income. Cayman islands has a scheme like this.

Re: pension and paperwork: thanks for the idea, I never said I thought this through :) I will look into it. I know we can be out of UK for 6 months without losing the perm residency.

I have lived in another country for 9 months and I think it's a great experience that more people should try, but actually I wouldn't do it right now. Emergencies do happen and you might find yourself unable to see someone at home when you really need to. From your list, Finland appeals to me the most. I have friends there and have visited briefly and I really like what I know of the lifestyle.

murmurgam · 11/11/2020 19:54

Finland's the one that's closed to non resident foreign nationals

frosted232 · 11/11/2020 19:56

I'd go if I was in your position. Somewhere a bit warmer and preferably near a beach. I absolutely hate the winter in this country though so I'd go anyway, pandemic or no pandemic.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/11/2020 20:04

- I want to move out of London, not in

Sorry, yeah I got it😂 I was just not clear. You mentioned getting rid of high London rent, I suspect taht it's still cheaper than what it could cost you elsewhere with all the added stuff.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/11/2020 20:07

Also, OP if you are planning on padsport in a future do be careful. www.gov.uk/apply-citizenship-eea

I know it says fine for 6 months without losing residrncy, but as we all know home office likes to fuck us in the arse without so much so as a foreplay😑

TheSunIsStillShining · 11/11/2020 20:28

@SchrodingersImmigrant yeah, we thought of that... but atm we are not too keen on british citizenship. We came here with the intent to have one as soon as possible. As it became possible the country was on the road to brexit. We'll wait and see.

We chose an expensive part of London because of school. Calculated risk/choice, but atm it's not worth it really. Based on some back of the envelope calc in Germany, in a small village, we would be better off even with added extras.

Tbf I would be happy even moving to a seaside, remote house in Cornwall. But I wouldn't find one that is available for short term (6m) rent. :(

I get you. Last month I was researching Thailand😂 Last year it was Egypt. Autumn does that to me.

Lots to consider there for you. Good luck
